Very nice review! Engine rpm alone does not determine fuel efficiency. Engine displacement must be factored-in, and we established that the Honda generator has a significantly larger displacement than the EF model. By analogy, this would be comparing a Honda Civic with a 1.5L engine to a mid-size sedan with a V6 3.5L, and claiming the V6 is more fuel efficient because the engine turns slower, yet where the larger engine sucks in more fuel. Best bet is to run the tanks of both generators dry to see what’s what.

This is true, but having done this test before with the Yamaha verses Honda, the smart generator turns even more rpm at full load then the Yamaha. Both using the same 80cc engine. At full load the test was almost identical and even more rpm would require more fuel so I can assume that this will burn more fuel over all then a normal unit. But again it’s meant to be a supplement to solar which is where the big savings come from after ROI…

The thing I like most about the Smart Generator is the auto charge function. Wherein it will run and charge the Delta Pro automatically. That in itself is a great innovation.

Totally agree, I like the smart features and connectivity, I only worry about the very high rpm. Highest I have seen on that small engine so far. But it’s definitely cool. A pinch quieter would be nice but it falls in line with many others.

Very nice review! Unfortunately a standard generator can only charge the Delta Pro when it is not being used in a power outage because a standard generator is plugged into the Pro with a standard power cord instead of the AC patch cord so the power from the generator passes through the Delta instead of charging it! The Ecoflow smart generator is designed to charge the Delta Pro while it is being used for emergency back up power. I know this because I was hoping my Honda would charge the Pro while in use to save from buying the smart generator.

And the smart generator also has auto start. And it's configurable so you can have solar input coming into it and be drawing off of the battery and if it still doesn't keep up the generator can auto start at whatever set point you want. Then shut off after you get it to whatever state of charge you want
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
True , but a other generator will charge the delta pro while you are using the pro. If I have my Honda plugged into it, and I’m using a 1000 watts, it will, like mentioned pass through 1000 watts but the other 800 will charge the unit. So technically it it will charge and provide power in a pass through mode and charge the unit with what ever excess you have. Ac can only do 1800 watts so the Honda is perfect for that. And depending on how you are using the pro for “emergency power” so you should be trying to conserve and not just blow through your power supply. The smart Gen obviously will do better, but if you used it regularly like the Honda I bet you would need 3 smart gens or more to one Honda. The smart Gen is great on paper, but with a 80cc engine turning 5000rpm higher then any other generator on the market, and no warm up method or anything, I see it not lasting as long as it could. It needs a few minor tweaks and it could last so much longer. Will see how it does in the long run because so far people are hardly using them because they will use solar first. So will see hour wise in a year or two how they do. Although I have plans coming for the smart Gen pretty quick ..👍🏼

I have the EcoFlow pro with the two extra batteries and the 400w solar panel. I also have the AC unit. I ordered the extra battery for it but they are delayed for some reason. One thing the generator does that makes it a real value is it can sit without running and once the batteries are depleted to 15%, the generator will start itself and begin charging the batteries. No input needed. That is a real game changer for me.

Yes, I would love to see a fuel test for both generators. Put precisely 1 1/2 gallons of fuel in each empty generator and then proceed charge the DP with DC for EcoFlow SG and AC for Honda and see how much time elapses before each runs out of fuel. I currently have the EcoFlow SG which I purchased because of the smart/remote start feature. I already had Yamaha EF3000iSEB (with an extended run time kit and remote start kit) and Yamaha EF6300iSDE . Also I converted both Yamaha's to Tri-fuel so they can run on gasoline, propane or natural gas. I really wish EcoFlow would have made the SG Tri-fuel even if it added another 2 LBS
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 2 жыл бұрын
Yea tri fuel I think is mostly popular here but not in China as they have to have someone hooks things up for them I guess verse in the states you find the stub and get a valve and hose. Yes that’s the main reason to buy it. The ecosystem for ECOFLOW is pretty cool. And in reality you shouldn’t use the SG a much or as many hours since your charging a battery bank and then shut off. Great video Johnny! I have a 15 year old Honda EU2000i and also a new Predator 2,000 with the carbon monoxide protection. Both run between 6-8 hours or more on 1 gal of stabilized, non ethanol gas, under a medium load. I like to have at least 2 of everything just in case, because I live way out in the rural Countryside 🙂. I'm thinking about alternating the 2, along with solar to keep the Ecoflow Delta Pro powered up. I believe that the Eco smart gen cost runs somewhere in between the Honda and the predator, not sure, but I believe that I would rather put my money into another Echo solar addition when I can.

Another timely review. I'm looking at buying this generator now. When I emailed Ecoflow with a couple of questions the responses were amusing. Other reviewers have talked about lack of a high altitude kit, and poor performance above 3000 feet. When I asked about this the response was the generator doesn't have a carburetor so no kit needed, but output would be much lower at 1400 watts, not a problem for flatlanders 😂. The sales description makes a point about you can use use the AC and DC side simultaneously, but doesn't give any numbers. No reviews have covered this. Would be nice to see this in action and how the generator handles it. Thanks for all the great reviews

That was fun and informative. I imagine we will see many smart generators coming out from the other companies, and also, better generators. It is really useful to have a solar generator pulling in power, and have a duel fuel(in the future??) that will kick in as necessary without having to worry about it. These systems are becoming more like true "power stations", and taking the complexity out of it for us amp/watt/volt challenged.

It’s true, the tech is changing quick so hone in our demand for back up power and to make simple transitions if not enough power is there, we have these options. Agree. Now with RVs I don’t think I would recommend a full offgrid system. Most people sell there rvs in 7 years or less along with all that stuff and take a decent loss. A little expensive at first but plug and play and done. No install really. Unless you wanna hard wire. Changing the Rv market like crazy

All one would need is a small inverter generator like the honda with an autostart you could do with a cell phone then the advantage of the ecoflow would be negated. I just checked and the smallest remote start generator is a GENMAX GM3500iAED 30 Amp 3200W/3500W Remote Start Dual Fuel Inverter Generator for under $800. This generator is starting to look good to me as I have two ecoflow Pros and with this generator I could charge them both at the same time.

This is my exact problem. So I haven’t got to test it fully but I will be making another video to show soon when I test a couple things. When I did this test I had already ran the gen several times so nothing was cold. So like you I’m curious if I have the setting at full load for DC charging will the generator start and slowly rev up to almost 5000 rpm and not do any kind of warm up cycle. So that and a couple other things is what the next video will have in a week. Maybe two.

@@johnnysweekends Yesterday I bought one. It don't have a "engine heating procedure", giving full power to MAX/PRO immediately after start. That's a mistake, i hope that EF fix it by a firmware quick. It's loud, aspecially when charging via DC, much louder than my 2,5kw Loncin 3000i. Why? because has a smaller engine (80cc) and much higher rev speed. As I guess, such a high rotational speed results from the need to generate a sufficiently high DC voltage. It's not that loud when charging with AC. When you connect generator do max/pro via DC cable, the generator don't modulete of rev speed. It kicks to max even if power station is charger to full and only AC line is used. You must disconnect DC cable than rev drops after a few seconds (firmware fix needed) Charging via AC is much quiter when you limit charge power to 1kw but than you don't have a "smart functionality", just an ordinary generator like any other (much cheeper) one. Last dissapinted is lenght of DC cable, 5m is a mistake. Cable should at least 10m. Apart from the disadvantages that I described, it is a very good product, well-made.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 2 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, the rev speed after start up needs to wait about 30 seconds. And even then a 5000 rpm engine speed is not needed. You could do it at 4600 or less because I don’t know if another model that runs that high. I feel these are prone to fail in less then 500 hours if it’s used to start and stop. If it runs constant it could run much longer. But no need for that as full charge would be a couple hours or so. It’s a cool design with its features but not a well thought out lol.

@@johnnysweekends I suspect that they were forced to increase the engine RPM due to the generator which did not provide enough voltage to reach peak power while DC charging. The simplest way to solve the problem for producer, whorst way for the customer. We live in such times. But maybe i'm wrong and they fix the engine control by a software (i hope)
@johnnysweekends

I don’t even know if they can fix it by soft where update as the inverter board probably controller start up and throttle control. But it’s possible they could all depends how much the firmware controls on the engine side.

You know the late oil debate never goes away. After reading and seeing so many experiments and tests I have been using Amazon basics or Walmart super tech as they appear to be the same and possibly made by mobile one. A semi synthetic or conventional 10-30w or 10-40 is what this calls for possibly due to the high rpm. But if always in a colder climate you can drop to 10-30. Funny the same engine in every other generator uses 10-30 or even a 5-30 is fine

Rato engineering. It’s a small engine like a lawn mower or wood chipper, splitter and more. I dont know anyone who breaks those in. Start with minimal ac load for 5 mins shut off. Move to 50 % load for 5-10mins shut off…75% 5-10 shut off….change oil. 100% 5-10mins shut off. Done. You are doing heat cycles to seat the piston rings. Let sit for about 10 mins or so each rest period. Change oil frequently and hope for the best.

I was hoping to see the comparison done with the Delta unit putting out power while charging at the same time. I’d like to know if the advantage of the EcoFlow generator is the DC charging capability making the Delta stable while putting out 1000+ watts.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 2 ай бұрын
You may wanna check for updates on firmware and also your charging speeds on the delta as you can control AC input speed. Although if charging with a regular generator you may have problems charging if not at all. These models need a pure sine wave inverter generator, but even then you will be put into bypass mode charging with ac. So your total output is limited until ac charging is complete then you can use full power of the unit. If using the smart gen and DC charging you have full usage of the unit. No bypass. Hope this helps

At any rate, I’ll probably just put a soft start on my RV air conditioner and run the generator when needed. The smart generator from EcoFlow, now available as also a dual fuel unit as well, does have cool features if using the data. Auto start and stop when needed. Remote control from your phone. It’s definitely pretty cool with all the capabilities that it has. It uses a common Rato 80cc engine. Which is a good off brand engine that has been around a while now. Now it does have more electronics in it then just about any other generator. And no real long term data yet on how they hold up. I haven’t heard much as far as problems except in extreme cold they have a hard time starting as the battery isn’t super big, so if it needs multiple times to try to start it may not. Kinda depends where your gonna use it and what fuel. There are a couple tricks for cold. The champion 2500 is also a good unit. But remember if charging AC the unit goes to pass through and you can only use 1800 watts while AC charging. Which at 1800 it wont charge, you get only 1800 when AC to use or charge. Hope this helps some.

@@johnnysweekends I definitely like the EcoFlow Dual Fuel Generator -- but the price is not justified in my opinion. My Pros are used for occasional outages, and I was going to try to use solar as a recharging option, but the number of panels needed to recharge the Pro is more than I want to mess with. If my logic is correct, I should be able to recharge a Pro unit with the Champion 2500 running on propane in about 2 to 3 hours. I'm here in FL so cold weather is not much of an issue. My biggest question is can I use the DC charging cable to charge my 48v lifePo solar battery? I want to buy one of these generators and cut the end off the DC charging cable and fit an Anderson plug to charge my 48v batteries, but this DC cable has 6 other tiny communication cables in it. Will it still charge my 48v batteries properly if those other 6 coms cables are just blanked off and the DC +/- are connected to my 48v battery? Also, what if the lithium battery is dead in the unit, will it still start on the pull cable? And what if I didn't have a smart phone, how can I change the settings? Your help and advice please!

I am not ready to put up solar panels, but I use medical equipment that I need be powered uninterrupted. One of the things I like about this system is it's modularity so I can piece it together as money and situation allows (add batteries, solar etc). I am thinking that I will get the Smart Generator to recharge the Pros if the power were to stay off for an extended period (medically I also need the A/C to run which would be huge draw in summer). But I live in an area where it can get very cold and snows and in summer very hot which makes putting the generator outside worrisome. I just watched your video on adding an exhaust line to the Smart generator, which will solve my issue of where to place it as it will allow me to put it in my garage with proper additional Co monitor(s), but do you know if I need to trickle charge the battery if it's on standby? Should I schedule it to turn on for a few minutes like once a month? Hey Johnny, thanks for sharing. However, this is not a fair apple to apples demostration. Both are nice generators and choosing will be based on one needs. For me, the ecoflow works best for my Cargo Trailer Conversion. My Eco generator primary use is to charge my 15 kw battery bank (Eco mode, low rpm) in the event of an extended cloudy days (winter) or during high usage of my mini split during hot summer days or cold night when my solar panel cant get the job done. Having a low battery monitor onboard to automatically turn on the generator to charge the batteries is another plus. Which is simiar to a home backu[ generators. Having a built in Dual Fuel regulator is another plus, not an add on option ($280) like with the Honda. When the gird gose down the gas pumps at the gas station dont work so dont bother running down to the gas station. Also, Propane doesnt go bad I dont feel the ECOFLOW Gen was designed or built to compete with other traditional generators, its in a class by itself built for an Ecoflow system as a "backup for charging a battery bank ". I hope this was informative for others deciding. Steady as she goes!!!
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 7 ай бұрын
Hello, and no problem. And honestly wasn’t supposed to be apples to apples. More of people deciding is the Honda better to do basic charging of EcoFlow products or better to jump into the EcoFlow ecosystem. The original smart gen I had was for my DP which has moved on as I have the DF now to run my D2M and DP and also Power kit setup in my RV. Having the EcoFlow smart gen allows full integration for full autonomous charging as long as there is fuel. It’s a good gen with a commonly used Yamaha clone MZ-80 engine. While it has its pros it also has a couple cons like higher than normal rpm ranges, no warm up cycle and eco mode doesn’t work in DC charging setup as lowest watt range for DP and larger systems is 1000 watts. Which eco is off at about 800-850 if memory serves. Definitely a great addition to any EcoFlow ecosystem. But with the few draw backs like mentioned above, oh and the short DC cable makes it still have a couple considerations people should think about before buying one. I so far love it and recommend if you are truly going all in on EcoFlow products. Much like all in on apple if that’s your thing, but it can be used as a stand alone generator if you wanted it for the fancy on and off auto start and shut down while using the app. I would mind a higher output unit now as charging 10K and above units definitely takes time. And no gen should be ran at full capacity all the time if you expect longevity out of it. Hybrid mini splits are the best thing since sliced bread..!!

Unfortunately in that size wifi and Bluetooth don’t really exist yet. Honda has Bluetooth in a couple models and so does ryobi and echo which I’m pretty sure are same manufacturer for those models. But to get for data and start stop like this smart gen well there are none that I know of in 4500-5000 watt models. There are dual fuels and remote starts but again wifi and Bluetooth is on smaller units or Hondas big 7000 watt model. Which I do see these used for about $2500 sometimes but that’s rare. I guess next is do you want dual fuel. Most of the time I prefer a few champion models the 4500 and 4650 were a couple of the best so far that are quite and longer run times they say a comparable Westinghouse 4500 model. RPM alone don't mean anything. A semi-truck runs at 700rpm while a Porsche 911 cruises at 4000 rpm, yet the semi is far less efficient. I bet the honda has a bigger volume engine.

Look at which needs more maintenance, the Porsche by a 1000 times. The less revolutions per minute the less wear on cylinder, piston rings, springs valves crank, bearings and more. 3600 to 4000 is ideal for max rpm after that your over spinning in this catagory. But will see how long it lasts.

The Adapter to connect this generator to the Delta Pro no longer comes with the Delta Pro. How do I know??? I just purchased $8,400 worth of EcoFlow equipment and I didn’t receive an adapter. EcoFlow says, they no longer give the adapter free. They want me to pay an extra $70 plus tax and shipping to make this Generator a Smart generator. What a bunch of bull sh#t. F this company. What am I supposed to do with this smart generator that can’t communicate to the Delta Pro. Doesn’t that make this a dumb generator only it’s louder and cost more than most generator of its class. Out of the box this thing sucks until you pay more money. 👎🏼 an absolute fail in my book.

I agree I’m honestly not to impressed unless you specifically utilize it for that one feature only which is the auto on and off. Other then that it’s nothing special and I think is prone to fail sooner then other units. And yes it’s loud!!

I agree! I also purchased the Delta Pro and the smart generator. Looked everywhere for that small adapter, b'cause the instructions depict & describe it. Called EF, and the customer service person told me that when buying through CostCo, that adapter is not included (?!?!?!) WTH??? That is the reason I purchased it! What BS! I bought it, but am not happy about it!
@johnnysweekends

It should be included or included with the smart gen I guess since you need it for that. Lame you have to buy it separate now.

@@johnnysweekends I agree. EcoFlow reach out to me after some one from their company read the review that I left on Amazon. They changed their minds and sent me the adapter. However, to the best of my knowledge adapter still does not ship with the generator or the Delta Pro for free.
@johnnysweekends

It needs to be included with the generator because if you buy the generator you can’t even use it..🤷‍♂️ So either have a direct plug in or include the adapter with one of the units. That’s shady for sales.

It’s more energy efficient to just use the gas Honda generator 😂🤦🏻‍♂️ you lose efficiency if you use a gas generator to charge a BATTERY then power up things with the battery. Just use the Honda.

Depends what you are trying to accomplish. The smart gen can put out ac or Dc power. Which Dc to Dc is more efficient plus with auto start features and solar it’s way more efficient then gas, sometimes. Once so do is full solar maintains and then the smart gen can kick on and off as needed. Verses the Honda must stay running, always.

Test is meaningless without actually testing the fuel efficiency. That's what we are hear to watch.

@@johnnysweekends Put 1 gallon of fuel exactly to both Honda and Ecoflow and test how much watt does each charge to Ecoflow battery. Is Ecoflow generator actually 10 percent more efficient in charging battery vs honda.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends Жыл бұрын
I can tell you now that it’s not. It will burn more fuel because of the excessive high rpm’s the ECOFLOW generator runs at. I have done this test before with other units and even though ECOFLOW has a smaller 80cc engine, and Honda has a 121cc once both at higher rpm or full load they test came out almost identical. But that Yamaha engine also turned less rpm. So up the rpm and now you will burn more fuel then the Honda of both at at full load. Even at 60% I bet the ECOFLOW does worse due to Honda low idle and low load rpm. But it would be a decent test and I don’t need a gallon I can simply use a measured amount of fuel but the power station would also have to be at the same charge percentage that way it can draw the same. Of course I can set it as well. I’ll look into it. Probably be about 2-3 weeks.

The ecoflow Generator seems to have been built specifically to charge their batteries. It lacks additional AC outlets which limits its use for general purposes. It also charges the delta Pro on DC, so you use/draw power from the delta pro while charging. You can’t do that while charging with AC. Again, supporting the fact that the ecoflow generator was optimized for use with ecoflow products and not general use. The review did not favor the Honda, he simply pointed out the narrow ranged usage of the Ecoflow generator.

The generator was built for a purpose, I think it could have been built a little more universal. And also a lot quieter as the thing goes from zero to max with no warm up or anything. And over all with the engine reving higher then any small generator even larger ones it will cause premature wear and adds to the overall sound/tone and db level of this unit. The could have easily found another way to put out the same amount of watts at a lower rpm. Biggest thing is on a cold 40 degree morning or colder, nothing like having the generator start and idle for about oh 1 second and go straight to 5000 rpm. Again the idea is great. And allows you to use full functions of the delta pro. Verses the Honda will charge the pro and run items as a pass through but only to a certain wattage. Thanks for the comment ..👍🏼😀

@@johnnysweekends I totally agree and don't know why someone screams "fraud". If the Ecoflow is much louder than a Eu20/22 from Honda, then it's a major drawback. If the engine is this small, the higher RPM will mean more wear. I really was trying to find a good (enough) reason to get the Ecoflow. But at the End, the increased noise, small engine and the questionable longevity make me lean to stay away from it. Even though I like the Electric Start option. If one wants to implement it in Ecoflow infrastructure, I see advantages, but if one needs a Generator for multiple applications (which could include supporting a Battery Bank), I guess a Honda ist the better option... Sadly, because electric start/stop (with a remote function) makes much sense in some applications.

The Honda is a great little power house unit but with some limitations like any unit. The EcoFlow smart gen really is packed with features and thought out well for the intended use. But i still dont like that eco mode is basically useless and it starts and goes right up to engine rpm when plugged into any EcoFlow product. It’s works for ac modes on low watt draws but i don’t recommend this unit unless you own EcoFlow products and want to expand you EcoFlow ecosystem. The original comment guy, well like any place you find comments you have trolls as well.
