In this video I show you everything I own. I do use more than these things, but since I live with non minimalists I can only decide about my personal belongings, so these are what I will show you today. I agree that that might be seen as a bit controversial, but I thought it could be interesting stince I belive that a lot of minimalists live with other people who do not share the same thoughts about stuff. So this video is showing you how a minimalist life can look like when it comes to the material things, but there are a million other possibilities that are just as valid :)
The other videos I mentioned:
My minimalist shoe collection: • My Extreme Minimalist ...
My extreme minimalist wardrobe: • Extreme Minimalist War...
minimalist technology: • Minimalist Technology ...

Really appreciate your perspective as a minimalist who lives with non-minimalists, because that describes myself as well. It ends up being a balance where the house has more things than I would like to have but others in the house would prefer that we have even more.

I find very cool that you dont feel guilty for having stuff, you simply have the things you need and really want to have. I think thats the real purpose of minimalist, to only keep what you give a value to. Short story: I always keep letters and drawings or things my friends from school give to me, and a few weeks ago I was organizing my stuff and I found that I have a lot of these things. I found it interesting how many of these letters have no value for me anymore because either were given by people who are not friends of me anymore, or were unimportant things. I decided to just keep the ones I truly want for now. So yeah, as you said at the end of the video, it is interesting how in the future you see what you used to have and how has it changed! Great video, Lia. Keep safe:)

Oh yes, I can relate so much! I had so many letters but never went back to read all of them. Eventually, I kept a few that represent all the feelings I had for them and they are now stored with my childhood photos and I have the same memories, just less stuff ☺

I don't live minimalistic but I try to get rid of things that I really don't need or love and I also try to reflect more on what one actually needs versus what one just really really likes to have and it's been great for reconnecting with the things that I own. Great explanation! My husband is open to being more minimal, but it took us two weeks for him to let go of our three extra sets of silverware and our 4th spatula. So I'm learning to focus on the possessions that are definitively mine and let our shared family possessions be. I do still pose the question of if we need 3 spatulas, but if he says yes I let it go and accept that he would like 3 spatulas, even if I wouldn't chose that.

Thank you so much for sharing! I totally understand you. No one else in our family is into minimalist and it often drives me bonkers to see everyone bring so much stuff into the house. I own a lot more than you. I'm a professional musician and vocal coach, so I have a piano, an e-piano, PA equipment, and a recording studio setup. I think having exactly what you need - no more and no less - still makes you a minimalist. It's very inspiring to see how other people live minimalism.

Oh yes, I totally agree! Also, I think you are absolutely right when it comes to the definition of minimalism. Or at least when the perfect amount is a lot, you could still call it "essentialism". Anyways it is always the best decision to figure out what we need because if we have these things (and only these things) I think our lives are a lot lighter and easier and most of the time a bit better 😉

I had just been thinking about a lot of extreme minimalist videos I have seen where the person owns X number of things, but shows them using cooking equipment, etc, which they obviously use but don't technically own. I appreciate you sharing this and creating a frame work to better appreciate "own" vs "use". Really enjoy your channel. Xox

Thank you! Exactly... I mean sometimes these extreme minimalists really only own a backpack worth of things. But most of them sleep in a bed and eat cooked food. And I think it is worth thinking about that too, even if it is a rented place/hotel and food at a restaurant. Everybody should do it how they feel best but thinking and talking about it can be interesting and make us understand each other and ourselves better ☺️

Nice video Lia 😁 Great job! That's actually one thing, that bothers me a bit: that mostly only digital nomads do this kind of videos...but of course, if you're traveling around the world and changing country every few months, you don't have the same needs/lifestyle then someone who lives in his own apartment with a family. So thanks a lot for sharing all your personal belongings - it was really interesting 😊 And NO you definitely have not to much stuff 😉 I'm super impressed, that you can get along with so little! I love your style of minimalism. I’m am very intrigued by minimalism, but I am not a minimalist. I think you personally own very little and I can tell you are very thoughtful in your purchases/consumption. Though I’m not a minimalist I did a year of not buying durable items. Friends and family received quilts and other items I made from my stashes of stuff or they got gift cards or experiences (ie: I’d take them to dinner, a concert, a play, etc.) I don’t know why I didn’t continue that after the year was over. Maybe I’ll do it again for 2021. I had been watching another KZfaqr minimalist but I unsubscribed from her channel because she was always decluttering her house and throwing away lots of items that are recyclable. When she constantly throws large amounts of stuff away, it doesn’t match with my idea of minimalism. That being said, I’m sure she does own less than I do. I likely would’ve kept watching her videos if she’d at least make the effort to recycle or donate items. One of the things that attracts me to minimalism, is that it is better for the planet. My ideal self would be a minimalist who follows a whole food, plant based diet, and doesn’t use petroleum to get around. Maybe one day! This is longer than I expected, mostly I want to say I love your videos and am glad I found your channel. You are an inspiration.

You really stay organized. You really don't own very much only what you need personally. I probably have much more than you do personally that's mine. Nice video! Your channel has quickly become my favourite actually :) I have no idea how much I actually own, because I live with my husband and son. But seeing your items, it must be a bit more. I do struggle a bit with parting with (too many) duplicates that I do love (but come 2nd after my favourite) - like socks or scarfs. Especially socks or underwear will get holes at some point and I'll need to buy new ones, or I should keep the ones I have now. What did you do regarding to this? I also find it hard to declutter camping gear. We/ I have gear for camping super light (walking or by kickbike), light (by bike) and "normal" (by car), partly because the super light gear is very convenient but also the least comfortable. Like a 3/4 vs fullsize mat, inflatable pillow vs nothing (using clothes as a pillow)... Any thoughts on that?

You have a very small amount of things you own. I have a lot more... But I live on a farm- we need more things. Even clothes I need more because of this. Also my children need more clothes for the farm and outside- they nearly never play inside - just being outdoor is the best all year Long. But I still call us essentialists. Because we work both fulltime in our Jobs and have children and the farm (biologische Mutterkuhhaltung) we love having as less as possible to have time and energy for the most important things in our lives (ourselves, our children, our animals). I still own a lot of clothes and shoes... just in my opinion... but Since 2015 I changed my Shopping attitude and habits so much. My Kids even hate going shopping. And we have no TV because I hate commercials. The most important lesson I learned: never compare yourselve to anybody. Focus on your journey towards Freedom, being content and selflove. Greetings from Austria 🌼

Of course, you are so great at being non-judgmental... so let’s say “shocked” instead of “horrified”. The second “beer and soda fridge” in the garage, the mounds of spare blankets and linens, the insane amount of bath and beauty products for one person-stacks and stacks of these, endless bookshelves, etc. And your honesty and complete candidness is adorable: “I also use the shower curtain.” 😅

The thing about minimalism is that it should be a way to free yourself from your things. But almost every "minimalist" presentation I have seen was about their things -- exactly the opposite. It is not how many possessions you own that matters. What matters is, how many things own you.

My son (6) has a pretty minimalist wardrobe but quite a lot of toys... My son pretty much decides what he wants to have/declutter but of course, we talk about that. Since I am the most minimalist person in our household I am usually the one that would declutter the most but we just talk about it and don't force each other to do things they don't want. I would declutter more if I loved alone and they would have more if I didn't live here but luckily our preferences are not that different so that we always find a solution that works for all of us ☺

This video actually makes me think about the amount of effort I myself, but also a lot of other minimalists, put into their wardrobe. Even if you have such a reduced amount of things, the wardrobe is still not the biggest part of it... And for me, it will never be. For instance, I have more books than clothes and I keep them for my kid to grow up in a home with books (because I basically don't want to take that away from her, I kind of believe that it is not entirely my decision)... I feel such social pressure sometimes about this number of clothes thing and I've gotten a few comments on social media about it... but this encourages me actually... because after all, the number of clothes does get overrated so fast, doesn't it?
@ecofriendlia
@ecofriendlia 3 жыл бұрын
Totally... I think the wardrobe is just an easy place to start. But it's not the biggest part in numbers and definitely not in weight and storage space... But for many people, all the other things are maybe so overwhelming that focusing on clothes is easy. But also, everybody has to find a solution that works for them and minimalism is a journey after all ☺

Yes, you can check out the two videos I have on that topic, I think they are in the sustainability playlist. But I have to say that I have been struggling with it a lot, but right now I think I have found a solution that works for me ☺

You don't use nailclippers, nail files or hand and facecream? Or things to clean your ears.?

I have been decluttering for years ☺ but yes, it is super nice to not have too much, to not worry about things, and struggle with packing and moving and things like that. So I wish you luck on your journey to the perfect amount of stuff ☺

I don't think you have many things. Do you think it's much? :) My mother is kind of a maximalist and I couldn't live with her anymore. She lives with ONE other person and alone they own about 25 cups and 15 drinking glasses. And they use them all and fill the dishwasher completely at least once a day. Instead of clean the cup with a bit water and use the same cup again. It makes me a little bit crazy when I visit them and I admire your calmness living with your non-minimalist family. :D

Oh, I can imagine that it seems so unnecessary... ☺ I don't think I own much, but it really depends on the perspective, if I wanted to travel full time it would be a way too much but measured at the average European/North American I think it is really a small amount ☺
