I wish we could purchase 20 watt diodes then I would be very interested. Still, not enough to compare with a 40w (30w) red Co2 laser but the diode should last for a heck of a lot longer and no mirrors. I can't help but to believe that mirrors, as well as the distance between the mirrors, does affect the final power hitting the object and if there is any smoke that would make it even weaker if by only X amount. None of that transmission line losses with a diode laser (only from it to the item).

Very cool, was hoping you would make a video on how you made it. How come you put the endstop for the X axis on the carriage though? Wouldn't it be simpler to have it on the part where the stepper motor is. To have less moving cables.

A few suggestions if you make a new PCB: Use an Arduino Nano to mount on top of the board and keep size down. If the laser comes on at startup because the logic in the software is inverted, you could add another transistor or a strong enough pull up resistor. Then it would be HIGH to turn it on in software.

Yeah, you are right about the Nano, I just used the Uno because that's what most people have laying around :) I actually just had a brain-fart and put the transistor on the wrong side of the laser (high side) so I had to use a PNP :) I should just have put an NPN on the low side, but for some reason it ended up in the wrong place :P

Sorry to bother, but seems to be that u know about LD and electronics... I just buy an S9 Sculpfun module (10w)... but... how to drive it? what kind of pwm electronics to use it with my 3D printer?

Inkscape can generate laser GCODE, with a plugin!
