Those old-schoolers would look at us modern-day adventurere with all the fancy equipment and laugh! They were a lot tougher back then, amazing what they were capable of achieving without the comforts of today. Chimborazo was incredible...so many wonderful volcanoes in Ecuador.

For me, a foreigner who lives in Ecuador, Chimborazo is the ultimate place...is so majestic and beautiful, Chimborazo( The tallest mountain on the planet) taking into consideration that is placed in the middle of the world where the elevation starts from 2000m is taller than Everest.

Congratulations! What an incredible journey! You made a great decision to turn around . I experienced the same in Peru, in the Villaconata Cordillera mountains. We were very tired and running out of daylight. What an experience it was ! As Ed Visteurs said “getting to the summit is optional, but getting back down is mandatory “. Bravo!👍

The Phillippines...nice! Our guides are experts on Chimborazo, and when they decided the snow conditions were too dangerous, we made the safe decision to turn around instead of taking extra risks to reach the summit. We may try again someday, but even without summiting, the views were incredible!

Thanks! Good luck on your attempt, it is a challenge and well worth it. If you're looking for a nice hike to acclimatize (aside from all the other amazing volcanos), the Condor Trek is incredible if you time it with good weather. They've also added "basecamp huts" near Chimborazo which looks like a pretty cool option to begin the ascent. One thing I wish we had done...they have a high camp which puts you nearer the summit and gives you an extra night up high. We stayed at the base which added time onto the summit attempt. Staying at high camp for a night is a really good idea. Unfortunately we ran into dicey snow conditions which ultimately turned us around. Also, be very careful with your guides. They are known to be impatient, and often are in a hurry to get down to service other clients immediately after your hike, so you can feel a lot of pressure to not go at your pace. Again, good luck and have fun!!!

Thanks! We used EcuadorEcoAdventure.com We also used them for the Condor Trek, and they arranged transportation for us between Quito, Riobamba, and Banos. We highly recommend them, the Condor Trek was incredible, and they were good at adjusting for some miscommunications (mainly on our end). If you're doing Chimborazo, I recommend staying at the high camp the night before summiting. We didn't summit, if we had stayed at high camp that would have bought us more time before sunrise. Either way, though, it's a great experience and definitely we would recommend EcuadorEcoAdventure.

Beautiful video. I am moving to Ecuador in about a year and I ignorantly planned to climb Chimborazo. But it has real concerns with altitude sickness but I didn't think about the possibility of Avalanche. Not that I am scared it is just more information. Maybe every birthday I will climb.
@lylesuch4421

Wow, moving to Ecuador must be exciting! It is a beautiful place with so much to explore. Yes, avalanche and weather are serious considerations up on Chimborazo along with altitude. Luckily, the guides are very cautious and very knowledgeable about conditions. A lot of people ignore any warnings about safety and just push on no matter what. We decided to listen to our guides and turn back, hopefully to return someday to climb Chimborazo again. Luckily for you, if you live there, you'll be able to try as many times as you need to have a successful summit. Good luck!!

Thanks! The Chimborazo climb is definitely worth it, even though we didn't make it to the summit it was still an incredible experience. The wind wasn't too much for the drone, it flew without any problems. Battery life was shortened by the cold weather, and our hike was shortened by the dangerous snow conditions.

We would love to go back and summit, someday. If we did get the opportunity, we would try and stay at the camp midway up the mountain for a night. That way you can get to the summit as early as possible, before the ice conditions get worse as the day gets warmer. Good luck if you climb Chimboraza, it is an amazing climb!

@lylesuch4421

We would also love to go back and reach the summit, there's something about completing the climb that really finalizes the experience. I think next time I would prefer a night at the high camp, instead of staying down at the lower shelter. I could be wrong, but I think this climb is easier when there is more snow. It provided a pretty consistent surface, rather than navigating up and around rocks. Either way, it is a great volcano to experience!

We paid extra and slept at the High Camp tents (17,300 ft), starting out summit bid from there. That's easier than climbing all the way from 15,900 at refugio. Good luck!

It's such a cool adventure, and even if you don't reach the summit the views are incredible. We attempted Chimborazo on November 20th. Weather seemed perfect but the snow conditions were not. We also would have been better off if we stayed a night at high camp which wasn't an option at the time. This gets you nearer the summit earlier in the morning so it would help with the snow conditions that can get more dangerous as the sun comes up. Good luck and have fun!!

That's great, Chimborazo is an incredible experience (even if we didn't make it to the summit)! Our guide (Ecuador Eco Adventures) provided the boots, crampons, helmets and all the more "technical" equipment. They even had jackets, pants and all the layers if you don't have anything of your own. It's hard to recommend any specific gear, it's more about layering up and being familiar with your gear beforehand because a good part of the climb is in the dark so you want to know where pockets, zippers, and all that is located without having to fumble around in the cold. You definitely want every layer possible, including rain gear, windbreaker, thermal under layers etc. Also wool socks for warmth. Good luck!!

Exactly right...we can't confirm it but since we climbed in November and mountains like Everest aren't summited at that time, we may have been the people closest to space on the planet (aside from people on airplanes) when we were up on Chimborazo. It was a really incredible experience up there...highly recommended if you're looking for a challenging adventure!

Snow and ice get dangerous when it warms up later in the day from the sun, there is more potential for an avalanche. Leaving at night makes it safer because the ice is much more stable.

Unfortunately, we didn't. Physically it was tough and we could have made it, but the snow conditions were dangerous near the top, and there was significant risk of avalanche so we had to turn around at around 19,000 feet. Still, the views were incredible and it was totally worth it! Maybe someday we'll go back and try again. I'm sure you're well aware, but take acclimitization very seriously. Ecuador has plenty of treks and lower elevation hikes so you can prepare yourself for the altitude. Good luck, and I'm sure you'll have an incredible experience!! (if you have any questions, we'd be happy to give any specific advice).

The pressure is higher on the summit of Chimborazo since it has less vertical height within our atmosphere than Everest, and you won't see people using oxygen bottles.
