Hello, I thought I would come back here to give my input on this acclimation process if anyone is skeptical. I imported 8 plants on Oct 6 and followed these steps exactly (also added a bubbler when water propagating), and I was able to acclimate 7 out of 8 plants which was amazing! (the one that died I thought id experiment with moss acclimation and it rotted lol) Overall this method worked very well for me with some tough to acclimate plants like El Choco Red and Verrucosum. Since then, I now have all my plants with amazing root systems and all pushing out new growth! highly highly recommend this method.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me!! I’m so happy it worked for you- I know my methods aren’t for everyone and a lot of people roll their eyeballs into their skulls when they watch me acclimate plants, but honestly this has been the only thing that has worked for me too. Thank you for trusting me! I appreciate you ♥️ you made my night!

Yaaas! Weekend treat again! This is such a great video to see how you deal with imports - Imported for the first time from Indonesia 2 month ago (p.dark lord) and he arrived in good shape despite being stuck in customs for 2 weeks and the temperature dropped to the singles. They got the red roots and it was so difficult to see what was rotted, etc, but like you I squished away anything soft and mushy. Now it's pushing out a new leaf and I'm so happy I could wet my knickers! I've recently acquired a bloody massive Gloriosum rooted cutting, it's the round form and looks unreal. I didn't realise it would be so big - a metre tall and the leaves are ginourmous, but have popped it in leca and pon hoping this will get more roots going. The best leaf is slowly yellowing, so I'm not sure and I've had it now for 2 weeks. I'm way in over my head hahaha.
@unplantparenthood
@unplantparenthood 3 жыл бұрын
Wow- I can't believe that Dark Lord survived that shipment! I guess it really lives up to its name 😂 Also WOW a giant round form?! Sounds like heaven!! My guess for the yellowing is it's probably just adjusting to its new environment, and if it previously had soil/moss roots and is now in LECA and pon, it's also adjusting to the change of substrate. But in my experience gloriosums are suuuuuuch a pain when they're separated from the mother plant, but once they get reestablished they grow back pretty fast and vigorously. You'll do just fine!! 💪

I love your videos. They're always so relevant and honest. I'm doing my first import order this month and am super anxious about the whole thing and this video was comforting because you showed us how to treat and acclimate these plants, that you normalize and emphasize that they could arrive dead or near dead, and that even if they arrive near dead, you can successfully bring them back to life with the right steps. I'm hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Btw. I do hear the camera focusing but it really doesn't bother me (even while watching with headphones). I think the sound quality of your vids is great!

I have a nangaritense, and a fuzzy petiole, and it looks like they sent your friend the latter. They get confused or substituted a lot for nangaritense. Fuzzy petiole don't get the beautiful peachy coloring on the new leaves, but do get reddish backs on their new leaves that fades as they mature. It's not as flashy as say, an el choco red, but still pretty. The leaves have a more spade-like shape too It's def a very common one, and not as valuable as the nangaritense. If I'm right, you might want to take it up w the importer. Hope it all works out, and it really is the plant she wanted. 💚😊

Just a heads up! You're pretty much guaranteed to receive greenhouse/export grown Philodendron and Monster from Asian sellers as there are no native Philodendron or Monstera to Asia. However, mature Rhaphidophora and Epipremnum can be extremely sketchy as they're native and can be easily poached, the same goes for Asian begonia species.

@unplantparenthood
@unplantparenthood 2 жыл бұрын
It's kind of hard to explain without you being able to feel and see them in person, but after a few times importing you just kind of know by looking at them if those roots will make it. But aside from that, my importing style is that I just like starting over if I can and growing the entire root system from scratch. But if you're importing for the first time, I would just start by cutting off anything that is mushy and soft and just leave the rest! It's kind of nice to be able to experiment yourself and sort of observe the growth from the roots to see in the future which kinds of roots should or shouldn't be chopped off at the beginning of acclimatizing it. I hope that makes sense!

@@adityapsingh8144 As far as I'm aware, only Ecuaflora ships to Canada without import permit because it goes through a handler here. They do! You can contact them directly or order straight from their website. You need to have an import permit though.

Hi Kelwin! Unfortunately I actually don't know very many overseas sellers since I typically just tag along in group orders (I don't ever ask for their sources since they have businesses!) but I have personally ordered from Ecuagenera and Ecuaflora and have had great experiences with both. :) I've also heard good things about Greenspaces ID? I think that's what it's called!

Beware micorrhyzal inoculants shouldn’t be used on plants that are rooting. MI can help boost leaf and flower growth but diverts energy away from creating new roots (according to research institutes that sell the individual components the instructions always say do not use on rooting specimens)

How can a Philodendron melanochrysum be poached from a forest in Indonesia? Philodendrons all originate from Latin America. P melanochrysum is not a native plant in Asia.

You’re right! I actually posted this video before I knew that all philodendrons were a new world genus that all originated from South America. But a few people did reach out to me after I posted this saying that it’s really common that sellers in Asia purchase large poached plants from sellers in Latin America to use as their mother plants, or just sell them directly to aroid enthusiasts or other plant shops in Asia.

@@unplantparenthood i did not know of that. I although think it would be hard to smuggle a large Philodendron, a whole plant. It would make more sense to use some cuttings. In the tropics in Asia, I would think those South American philodendron s would grow fast. Philodendrons do not all originate in South America. Some, like P. smithii, P. mexicanum etc. originate in North America and others in Central America. Anyway nice plant cleaning. Very thorough.
