Rob is back at The Comedy Store and is joined by stand-up comedian and TV show panellist Ed Byrne. They talk about Ed’s current UK tour ‘If I’m Honest’, his feelings on turning 50 this year and his affinity for ‘loud’ shirts. They also chat about the differences between performing at a comedy club vs a corporate function, and recall their vivid memories of dying on stage at the latter…

I wonder does Ed still have the magnificent, dark green, velvet jacket he wore at the inaugural Moosehead Awards at the Melbourne Comedy festival in (I think) 1991. I'm a year younger than him and have followed him ever since, mostly because of the laughs but a little because of that jacket 😆.

Can't speak for Melbourne but think I remember seeing that jacket. It was around that time when I became a fan and have been ever since. Although I'm a year older than him, so we make the bread in a green velvet jacket sandwich.

I designed and produced corporate shows for 20 years. I hated when clients wanted comics. It almost never worked. Watching a talented comic die in front of 200 hungover sales reps at 9 in the morning is brutal.

Rob is such a great interviewer. Don't get me wrong, his guests are also incredible, including Ed. But I think I could probably listen to Rob interview anyone and still be absolutely spellbound. They say good socializers know how to make everyone around them see them as the most interesting person in the room. Great socializers make everyone around them feel as though THEY are the most interesting person in the room. Rob is so gracious and enthusiastic and playful and genuinely interested that he can make everyone around him seem extremely interesting. His enthusiam and curiousity is spellbinding and contagious, and even I feel more excited about life any time I get to listen to him. I'm so grateful that I am lucky enough to live in a day where I have access to this amazing content. Not to leave Ed out, I love the vulnerability and wisdom that he is sharing here, and I also love how entertaining he can make it when he tells these stories. I absolutely love his self-deprecating humor and the fact tha the doesn't take himself so seriously. And I also love how he also turns that interest that Rob is showing him back to Rob. A great interview. Thank you to those who made this possible.

@@johnman559 Personally I'd rather live life giddy, appreciating amazing people and amazing experiences to the fullest. I know it's not for everyone, and I used to hold that part of myself back for fear of being judged, but to be honest I have been much happier ever since I have allowed that part of my personality to be itself. So I certainly don't expect a single other human being to be giddy and don't judge them for that, but listening to this interview really did add great energy to my day, and I am not ashamed that I expressed my genuine enjoyment and gratitude for that.

I could be wrong, but I think it's because he is using a directlonal microphone, and it's pointed in the wrong direction (i.e. NOT towards his mouth). 15:22 is a good shot of both of them and where their mikes are pointed.
@thewrydogs
@thewrydogs 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree! It's because he doesn't wear headphones, but his mic technique is terrible. Ed Byrne on this is clear and audible for the whole time as he knows he has to keep his position consistent - even though he isn't using headphones. Rob is miles away and the mic is pointing in opposite direction. Great content . . . but we have to be able to hear it.

As a middle child, completely agree with Ed. Eldest is treated with "well we don't know how to raise one, let's let this one run freely". Middle child is treated with "well we were too free-wheeling with the last one, keep an eye on this one. And if this isn't the last one, then they'll have a babysitter we don't pay and a snitch we'll pay anything" Last child is treated "ehhhh whatever. Let's not get too tied up in restrictions or guidelines"

Such a shame that whoever produced this interview, has used microphone setup totally unsuited to both talents. Why not use lavs instead and leave Rode mics as props? You have 2 extremely funny guys who are known to be expressive, gesticulate, move around etc. Those 88 quid microphones would probably work if both Rob and Ed were wearing headphones. I know that Rob has got a pair of proper IEM's as he used them to monitor when recording from home. Even someone who talks to microphone for the first time would instinctively move closer to the microphone noticing drop in volume level. We have two experienced artists who talk for a living, including one voice-over pro who definitely knows what microphone technique is. Apart from this, I really loved the interview :)

This was fun. Let's review our Foclóir Gaeilge Béarla (Irish English vocabulary) for the above clip and then we can all go home. Ed at 6:47 : "I'm quite flaithulach as we say in Irish." flaithulach: generous, esp. to a fault; non-stingy; Someone who is flaithulach would peel an orange in the open, not in their pocket. While I'm here, not explicitly mentioned but relevant to Rob's slow down strategy to exude confidence when speaking, we have the following in Irish: "Tóg go bog é": literally, take it softly; figuratively, take it easy, slow down. "Ná bí buartha": Be not worried

I think you're wrong there Rob about place in the family. The last born always has an easier path because the mother always knows that child is last. They are often then bestowed with the greatest amount of love from their mother, and all other siblings. They become spoiled and by nature are more naturally driven to rise to the top by any means as their feeling of being a stand-alone character is instilled. Of course, they are always underpinned by constant familial love.
