Ed German grew up in Brooklyn and volunteered for the USMC when he was only 17. Ed served in Vietnam with Bravo Company, 1st Bn, 27th Marines, and Bravo Company, 1st Bn, 4th Marines. On May 10th, 1969, Ed was wounded along with 3 other Marines by a sniper while on patrol. When Ed returned to “The Real World” no on ever asked him about his service and time in Vietnam. Eventually, Ed started writing and publishing stories about his experience in Vietnam and in 2013 published “Deep Down in Brooklyn”, a memoir of growing up in Brooklyn, the Vietnam War, and beyond. Ed is currently the host of “The Urban Jazz Experience” on WLIW FM 88.3.

Thank you Sir, for this interview and your story. Proud to call you my Marine Brother as I served from 71-75 in the Corps (E-5) and P.I. grad. I lost my High School friend 9-16-70 over there. His name was L/CPL William Franklin. You Sir, are a true American! Thank you for your sacrifice! I'm thankful you made it home!! Semper Fi!

What a human being! Think of it! So expressive in telling a most difficult story. A high school drop out, a wounded combat veteran from an unpopular war yet look at the fantastic surroundings of his home. They tell a story! From a Viet Nam veteran, combat Marine.

I experienced the TET Offensive in 1978. I was discharged from the Marine corps in 1978 under conditions other than honorable. I was diagnosed with PTSD. The United States lost the VC War. I volunteered to serve. I survived a lost cause. I was wounded 3times: by a sachel charge explosion and bullet wound to left arm. 😊

Semper Fi, brother! I see you flown in style. We left from Camp Pendelton on the General Mann, a troop ship, taking two weeks to get too Okinawa. This was before we went to Vietnam. I was in Mike 3/7, we were attached to the 4th Marines for Operation Starlight. I was just looking at, A face of war USMC (1968), my old company. I rotated out before they made the documentary. I just happened on your story. Willoughby Avenue, I'm a Brooklynite as well, President St bet. Bedford and Franklin. Were you lucky enough to do a WestPac tour, training and traveling throughout parts of Asia? Who knows maybe I'll see you in Brooklyn.

It amazes me how lax things seemed to be in Vietnam. To be able to hitch a ride 10 miles down the road to catch up with a buddy before meeting the guys in your own unit. These days, there is accountability (roll call/head count) numerous times a day to ensure all Marines are accounted for. 😂😂 That you could just hitch a ride somewhere seemingly without anyone caring blows my mind.
