Artist Ed Ruscha's fascination with the vernacular architecture of Los Angeles began over fifty years ago and continues to this day. In the 1960s, Ruscha started documenting the building facades along the city's major roads by taking continuous photographs with a 35mm camera mounted to a moving vehicle. His first related publication, "Everything Building on the Sunset Strip" (1966), captures an extensive stretch of the famous thoroughfare. The Streets of Los Angeles Archive, now preserved at the Getty Research Institute, includes Ruscha's comprehensive views of avenues throughout the region.
Special thanks to: Mary Dean, Ed Ruscha, and the Ed Ruscha studio.

Lots of interesting elements seen side-by-side like that. Thanks for posting. Now I'm craving Pioneer Chicken, and I wish The House Of Pies was still around.

What an amazing idea! To see the influences of Peter Max, the changes in calligraphy on store fronts, buildings, trees, cars, it is moving history.

Bravo! Excellent artistry! Hmmm...not too many palm trees on Hollywood Boulevard back in the early '70s...just my observation.

I wish someone would do this same comparison but adding 2022. I bet the changes would be a real eye-opener, and probably not in a good way. Ed was so far ahead of his time. He saw art everywhere.

The apartment on the north side towards the end rents for $3800/one bedroom. Wonder what the rent was then?

OMG! I used to work at House of Pies. Boss was an absolute twatwaffle, but I went home with 3-4 fresh fruit pies each night. God, my family got fat when I had that job.

Should've served twatwaffle pies. May have kept that location in business!
