Such an underemphasized point, like you can listen to music in a language you don't speak and still enjoy the "music" you know, the lyrical aspect is an additional element
@williambinns2184 жыл бұрын
At first I hated Slipknot, I thought they are just noise now they're one of my most listened to artists I can sing along with most of their songs, they're one of my favorite bands and certain bands. It takes you time to get into another band, you like it, the first time you hear it, I don't think it necessarily has to do with the heaviness it just has to do with the combination of lyrics catching this rifts pretty much it's person to person. For instance, I grew up listening to pretty much nothing but country music from the year, 1989 to the year, 2009, and I still love that shit, but I also now listen to this shit. I listen to jazz, comedy, punk, I pretty much listen to every genre that isn't classical music. Here's my rule of thumb, if this helps, if you listen to a band more than 5 times and let's say you listen to 3 songs in each 5 times sitting, and by the 5th time, you don't want to come back to any of the songs you've already heard, or you don't really care, then they're probably just a band you just don't get into, but if, by that 5th time, you want to go back to the songs you're listening to in this video and listen to them for fun. Then I think, yeah, you will get into them. Also slipknot is labeled as: nu metal, heavy metal, alternative metal and more controversially hardcore thrash Ps. screamo is a music genre. It's a totally separate genre, and it is pretty much only screaming

Mick Thompson is their rhythm guitarist who does a lot of the “grinding” guitar riffs. Jim Root is their lead guitarist who does a lot of the solo squealy kinda stuff. And as far as describing rock bands such as Slipknot, you can use the term “heavy”. You enjoy Slipknot even though they’re “heavier” than something you might normally listen to! Really enjoyed the video dude! Love all your videos!
@karolsota59684 жыл бұрын
isn't Mick lead guitarist and Jim rhytm?
@guitarhero93924 жыл бұрын
Karol Słota could be. I always thought Mick played more rhythm, but honestly they probably just switch off a lot. But I have definitely seen Jim fucking shred some lead parts here and there

Mick is technically “lead”, but they do switch off quite often, depending on the song (whether it’s new or old).

The wonderful thing about metal music is that it is in your face, it’s not meant to be just background noise, ignored, it’s confronting and forces the listener to hear it. These people usually have a strong message to share. People don’t like being forced to stop and listen that’s why they tend not to like metal. I admire you for being able to give something so different from you preferred style a go. I personally could not listen to Sam Smith songs without pushing my fingers into my eyes to slowly stop the pain 😉 I’ve loved metal since I was 12. It calms me down, helps me focus, I feel like more oxygen gets into my lungs, helps me sleep, makes me smile and cry. When I hear pop music it hurts my head. I strain and squint, I can’t think and find it generally agitates me. Occasionally I find a pop song I enjoy but most of them feel like torture. My son is a musician gifted with the ability to play any instrument he picks up. My choice in music has helped shape him. I’m so lucky as he plays any song on request in my living room. 🤘

I did not always like Slipknot. I never hated their music, but I really just needed to get used to them. But after a while of trying them out, I really started to like their music. I did get used to them quite quickly, since my parents like to listen to metal from time to time (Rammstein, Motörhead and Metallica are some of their favourites), so I grew up around somewhat similar sounding stuff. Nowadays Slipknot is one of my favourite bands. My favourite songs by them are probably Dead Memories, Disasterpiece, Eyeless, Till We Die, People = Shit and Snuff, but the songs from this video are also very much up there for me! Great video, dude! Loved seeing your reactions to this masterpiece of a band!

Welcome to metal! To answer your question, I got into it back around 2000, the first rock song I liked was Crawling by Linkin Park, that was essentially the doorway into the metal world. I don't remember exactly when I came across Slipknot but the first song I recall is Wait & Bleed. I kind of left metal for awhile when I became a Swiftie, but I reintroduced myself to Slipknot and I just fell in love all over again. As for songs, I suggest these three: Unsainted The Devil In I Solway Firth

I didn’t listen to metal like this and got into it like a year or two ago when I was 19 ish, I started with what I call the gateway bands, so stuff like BMTH, MCR, Falling In Reverse. Just bands that are a little more poppy, and then gradually getting into heavier stuff. For Slipknot, All Hope Is Gone or especially Subliminal Verses are the albums I would recommend to listen to first as they have more poppy elements, their heaviest is easily Iowa, so stay away from that for now hahaha

I wasn't into this before highschool. In high school became obsessed with system of a down, then eventually just fell headfirst down the rabbit hole that is metal. It is legitimately one of the most diverse segments in music there ever had been or ever will be, the lyricism alone puts most other genres to shame. Then you have what you keep geeking about and that's the instrumentation and the rhythms. I have no doubt just based on your initial reaction that if you give metal a chance you will soon have a list as long as your arm of metal bands that you are absolutely a fan of. My first recommendation would be more Slipknot, doesn't matter what song, because it's all phenomenal. My second recommendation would be Gojira, start with the song amazonia. They are my favorite band in the world, and are being hailed as the most important band of our time by many of the major rock news outlets. Then my 3rd recommendation, get a screen capture program, and a set of headphones. You lose a ton of quality listening to music through laptop speakers, you will get so much more our of your listening experience even with a pair of $20-30 over ear headphones. Enjoy your metal journey dude!

Those noises you can hear from the guitar are pinch harmonics. Essentially you pinch/bend the string(s) to create the noise, usually the higher strings (thinner strings) on the guitar. Slipknot use 7 string as opposed to 6 string guitars too, a lot of metal bands do as it allows them to create a deeper, heavier sound when they down-tune their guitars (most metal bands use drop D or drop C tunings, but they can use anything from standard E all the way down to A tunings). If you like groovy music with a lot of syncopation/off beats/back beats, you might want to listen to nu-metal stuff that was popular in the 90s/early 00s, like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn etc (Slipknot was originally a part of the nu-metal scene during their early years too, but the songs you listened to were of later albums where they changed their style up a bit).

with regards to the question you asked towards the end of the video, I can say that personally getting into music like this was an evolution for me. in my early teen years I entered an emo phase like so many others, but to begin with I only listened to their acoustic stuff because I didnt enjoy air screaming at all. from what I can remember, it only took a few months for me to change my opinion there (though the stuff I was listening to wasnt on the heavy metal side, it was more emo bands like Sleeping With Sirens, Black Veil Brides, etc) and then over time there was a natural progression. I found a love for the heaviest songs by those bands, and then I wanted to listen to heavier stuff on occasion, and that led me to artists like Marilyn Manson and Slipknot. as much as you think you cant sit and listen to this stuff casually, if you give it a chance, you definitely can - I mean going from Ed Sheeran to Bring Me The Horizon was a big jump and you enjoyed that! it just takes some getting used to. regardless, Slipknot are always good to listen to if you’re particularly angry or need to get hyped up for something lmao

It took me a while to get into it. I originally got into linkin Park which was mostly catchy and singing but in some songs had screaming sections. Which I did not like at first but the rest of the song was great so I dealt with it. Over time I started actually liking the screamjng and being impressed by it. Then as time went on I got into heavier and heavier bands. Like a good ladder would be Korn Linkin Park System of a Down Trivium Bullet for my Valentine Slipknot And then the really heavy stuff

Do Snuff, Wait and Bleed, and Nero Forte!! I think it would give you a good vibe of a ton of stuff they can do.

These songs are basically the gateway into heavy genres

Jim Root is the man shredding in Psychosocial, he's a really badass person. There's also Mick Thompson who plays the lower guitar sections of the song.

i feel like to like metal you either listened to it since you were a kid or you just learned to love it and thats what happened to me, one year ago i couldnt listen to metal and slipknot at all, i was “scared” as you said and i was into pop music(thank god not anymore😂) but i just didnt knew the story behind, what they were trying to say in their songs and thats what i think is crucial to enjoy a type of music

please, PLEASE, if you're ever gonna do another rock band reaction, I highly recommend Alter Bridge. They are so underrated over here. They're super popular over in Europe but no one talks about them in North America. All the members are absolutely amazing at what they do.

Slipknot have multiple percussionists that’s why the drums stand out so much from everything else, also corey is a fantastic vocalist who’s also in another band called stone sour who are more of a hard rock band and are also really great and worth checking out

Definitely react to Snuff in Part 2, I believe this song will be your cup of tea, and will also show you the other side of Slipknot. Love your videos!! ❤️

The vocal technique is just called screaming so ur almost there lol its all from ur diaphragm and creating space in the back of ur throat. U don't use any of ur vocal folds tho. The guitarists are Mick Thomson and Jim Root and the band is considered Nu Metal for the most part. The tin pan sound is their percussionists hitting beer kegs with baseball bats (no joke, I promise). The guitar screeching is called a pinch harmonic and its fucking difficult and I hate them (not really I love them). I think the song of theirs that would suit u best is Snuff. It's much lighter and very emotional. You'll enjoy it. And I was scared of this kind of music until around 9th grade and now I do vocals and guitar in different metal bands.

Got into pop-punk when Offpspring had their peak, discovered Papa Roach and Linkin Park which got me into nu-metal and then I found Marilyn Manson and Slipknot who made me appreciate harder music. It was a slow progression though.
