Ed The Shoulder Jumping Cat

Ed the cat jumps from shed to shoulder in exchange for some tasty treats. He has learned to do this through cat clicker training. Ed is highly food-motivated, so he enjoys learning new tricks. He often purrs throughout the entire training session.
Some of the jumps in this video are pretty far distance considering the small landing area. I haven't tested his maximum distance record for this particular jump yet, but maybe that's something for a future video. If anyone wants a video showing how to train their cat to do this, I could make a video about that too.

And that's the problem. We love them for what they do for us emotionally and psychologically and not for their well-being. When I volunteered at the local shelters I quickly found out most actual people there were there for themselves and not the cats.

Shoulder kitties are the best! I had a ginger who would always jump on my shoulder without any food motivation or anything like that. Turn my back on him? Surprise! Sudden kitty on my shoulder! He'd hunker down and just stay there as I walked to wherever I was going. If I passed an open door slowly, he'd sometimes jump onto the top of the open door! He'd stay up there, teetering on the top edge of the open door and, the next time I went by, back onto my shoulder! He was quite a guy and I miss him. Congratulations for having your own shoulder kitty!!

Aw sounds like he was an awesome cat! The ginger kitties have a lot of personality! Mine is definitely not a natural shoulder jumper, but he does learn tricks quite quickly! Now that he’s used to it he will also often just remain on my shoulder while I walk around with him. It’s awesome when they just sit there while purring.

Used to know one in the cattery I was volunteering at. Big tuxie who was a sweetheart, finally found a new home ( lot of folk were scared because he jumped on their shoulders, i think because of his size). However he was so cuddly, and would purr up a storm right in your ear 😂

My cat used to jump on my shoulder while I was wearing tank tops. She loved to drape herself around my neck while I was cooking. I had a fine network of scars from scratch marks but I didn't mind. Loved her so much.

Our family had a stray orangish tabby cat that did that too. As we went up or down at the treehouse-like structure, he would hitch a ride. His name was "Yeller." He and our Siamese cat also got into some major disputes as well.

Got a shoulder kitty too. She waits up the shed for me to ride in on my bike, then catches a lift up the house on my shoulder. Goes with my son out to the road at school bus time. In the afternoon, she's back up the driveway waiting for the bus to drop him off home again.

This is very true! It’s nearly impossible to train a cat if they don’t trust you. Especially for a trick like this. Slow incremental steps and keeping training sessions short works very well!

Usually he lands fairly gentle, but when he doesn’t it definitely goes through a t-shirt! Sweater is best for sure!

Those orange cats are smart. I used to have a cat, Simba, was very smart, but I don't think he would have held back on his landing. And my other tuxedo cat, Snowpaws, weighing 14 pounds would have just bowled me over jumping from that height. She was quiet and just kept to herself most of the time. But when she was in the mood, she'd leap from the floor and onto my lap and make her presence known, a very heavy presence at that. Enjoy all your years with Bobo🐈.

When I was the local communicator behaviorist at our local shelter, there was a cat, ok, 100 cats I was friends with. One of them would jump from the floor to the top of my shoulder which wasn't an easy feat as I am 6'1" and once in a great while would miss, resulting in a lot of pain for me and embarrassment for him.

That roof looks like its asbestos, kind of blueish grey and not the pale grey of fibrous cement sheeting. You should encapsulate that by rolling a few coats of paint on it WITHOUT scrubbing, sanding, wire brushing or water blasting the algae and dirt off. Just sealer straight on with a corrugated roof roller, and then a couple of coats of color paint.

Had a kitty who every day when coming home from work as I opened the door he would jump on my shoulder. Would steal my glasses ( chew on them ) and wait for me to walk into the kitchen with the other two kitties in tow to get chow. The expectation and happiness he gave me as well as the other two over the years is unforgettable. Sadly ( Rio ) passed away a year ago today at the age of 18 years and 1 month. The other two never tried to copy him and that I found surprising. They are only with us for a short time but, the memories of the silly and amazing things they do stay with you forever...Your kitty is so cool in what and how he, she, interacts with you and I find the personality differences between each and every kitty an amazing tail...

Aw sorry for your loss! Your kitties sound awesome! You’re exactly right, they all have unique personalities and they are all great! I definitely have a special bond with Ed and Bobo too. Ed is my first own cat, and a little bit later we were able to adopt his brother Bobo as well. Your comment is a good reminder to make the most of the short time we have with them. It’s actually the biggest reason I started this channel, to document all the fun times we have with them and making lots of memories! All the best to you! 😻

If you have more than one collectively, they will and make it a collective effort to screw with you and wait for results to be assed for future use. As they gain insight and wisdom from your actions so should you. Bless your Kittys and yourself and keep them close to your heart.

Our cats have always launched themselves onto our shoulders. Sometimes it's from a high vantage point, like a kitchen cabinet ~ or they will simply stand in front of you & jump, trusting that you will catch them. Our cats also follow us everywhere, insisting on being almost constantly in our company. This video is nothing unusual. The summer is the worst time for genuine 'shoulder cat' owners, because of the lack of clothing layers. This guy has clearly specifically trained his cat to jump onto his shoulder ~ evidenced by the protective pad he wears.

He is definitely not a natural shoulder jumper! Just like the description mentions he was trained to do this through clicker training. Now that he’s used to it he will often just sit on my shoulder purring while I walk around with him, which is fun. In general the training is just another way to keep them stimulated and have quality time! All the best to you and your natural shoulder jumping cats!

Ouch indeed! When he was still learning this trick he landed pretty rough, but now he’s usually gentle. Still prefer a sweater just in case!

Those look pretty cool! Will check out if it’s feasible. I guess most of the weight is battery. The ones we’re using now are 35 grams, but they don’t wear it for long periods and don’t seem bothered by it at all.

Ultimately cats do what they want to do. Even with treats they may completely ignore you if they’re not in the mood! Fetch is very cool though, mine can’t be bothered to bring stuff back.

My Cat, Desmo, has jumped and landed on my back/shoulders when I didnt even know he was in the room. He gets up on a chair and just lets it fly. He hits with a real thump and hangs on for dear life. It was a shocker the first time he did it, for a second I had no idea what had hit me. He is a novelty animal who has destroyed many things of value in the house, climbs the drapes, chews the blinds, loves people and has to meet everyone up close and personal who comes in the house. He's a good boy.

They don’t react to it at all. Never tried to get it off or behaved any different. They were already used to wearing a GPS collar though, which are very similar in weight. That said they still only wear it for like 20-30 minutes max and most days not at all.

Thanks for your concern, I get it! However, let me assure you that he doesn’t react to it at all. He really doesn’t care he just goes on about his day. He is already used to wearing a tracker and this cam is roughly the same weight as that! We also make sure that at least 2 fingers are able to easily fit underneath the collar. That said he only wears it for 20 minutes or so max, and most days not at all!
