When my family saw Shrek 2 when I was a kid, we swore blind that Jonathan Ross was the voice of the bartender but the credits still said it was Larry King. My mum heard it was supposed to be Joan Collins as the TV presenter, it said so in the credits, but that was so obviously not Joan Collins in the film. It was so confusing.

From the outset, this trend of redubbing was meant to allow foreign countries to either just do their own voices or play their own takes outright on the piece concerned. The problem here is that sometimes a vital piece of information about the piece's integrity can get lost in translation undetected, and then they might just not care about what matches best with the character all the time and play with it, regardless of what the intent of the series; writer was, just because of the language barrier. Cultural barriers exist too, and this means we can be left to choose say only someone who has actually made it big, and not maybe give someone who might not be well-known but would sound more appropriate in vocal tones for the job. Again I say that with choice of soundtrack; you get my idea. Great video. Samuel F.

It's less common in English though, as discussed here it's usually limited to small cameos or shows meant for young children (Peppa Pig was left unlocalized, and supposedly it's become relatively common for young children to start talking in British accents after watching it). In the case of Spain/Latin America, they oftentimes do two completely separate dubs.

FYI: The reason Ed put on Futurama just when he says "sometimes a term in one country can be very offensive in another" is because in that scene, Zoidberg (Bipedal Crustacean) tells Fry to repeat after him in an alien language, and in a desperate attempt to do so, accidently insults him with his mispronunciations, causing Zoidberg to say "What?! My mother was a saint!" The funny thing is that entire scene is just voiced by one person talking to himself

Magic Roundabout's american dub is especially horrible thanks to the involvement of Harvey Weinstein of all people. He had done it once before as well with 'Arabian Knight' a heavily edited americanized version of the Australian/South-African 'Princess and the Cobbler', which itself was a heavily bastardized version of 'The Thief and the Cobbler', an unfinished film from a Canadian director that had been stewing in production hell for three decades.

From past experience, it makes the most sense in movies as you don't have a lot of time to learn the accent and any slang. For TV series it can go either way, but I know some programming like Misfits is basically incomprehensible to pretty much all Americans without subtitles as it's not just a very thick set of accents, but they're also using a lot of slang so you're never really sure what's being said. That chav girl in particular was nigh impossible to follow. If it hadn't been for my rubbish DVD player that would automatically turn the subtitles on when I turned it back on after I started watching a disc, I"d probably still be unable to understand any of what was being said. And, as an English teacher who grew up on various British programs that had been imported into the US, I'm probably one of the better Americans at figuring out what random British people are saying.

I worked at Absolutely when they were releasing Stressed Eric in the US, and that was one of the first shows to re-hire voice actors with the same language. That was changed as they were concerned Americans wouldn't be able to understand our accents. Unfortunatly the show bombed so hard it only aired three episodes before being taken off the air. Also, a lot of '80s cartoons meant for English territories would hire Canadian voice actors as they felt that was a good middle-ground for English accents. One notable instance that makes me feel lucky to live in the UK: The Studio Ghibli film 'Arrietty', based on the British children's book series 'The Borrowers', had an English dub by Studio Canal that had a cast with many big name talents. It included Saorise Ronan, Tom Holland, Olivia Colman and Mark Strong playing the main characters. A cast so great it has only got better with time as Tom Holland went on to play Spider-Man, Saorise is a Hollywood/Indie darling, Mark Strong was in the Kingsmen films, and Olivia Colman is an Oscar winner. However, this was the UK dub, and Disney made their own dub for American audiences. This version starred Bridget Mendler, David Henrie and Moises Arias - actors from the Disney Channel, with Amy Poehler and Will Arnett in supporting roles. Definitely the short end of the stick. And if you're American and want the British dub, you have to import a UK copy because all home video releases over there only have the Disney Channel dub.

its weird, ive had something similar happen to me. im american and its pretty obvious i have a midwestern accent, but ive also consumed so much content from other english-speaking countries/areas that the way i word things, the tone of voice i use, and even my accent has somewhat changed. its pretty strange, i wonder why this happens?

Something similar happened to me, I'm from Argentina and as a child I watched a lot of shows dubbed into Neutral Spanish, which is more similar to the Mexican Spanish dialect, so people always questioned me if I was from another country due to me speaking a different dialect of Spanish

When Funimation took over the dub for Dragon Ball Z, Ocean still had licensing rights to dub it as well for Canadian and I believe UK audiences as well but they were under a different name. That's just the coolest example I can think of with this topic of "two dubs" with the same language.

Another thing to point out is that British English and American English are considered to be sub languages of overall English language, just and Irish and Scottish English are considered sub languages of English. This has occurred to the point that many actually consider British English and American English to be the equivalent of Spanish and Portuguese, in that while they have the same root language, phrases, vocal pronunciation, spelling, and sometimes even completely different meanings to word warranting splitting the two into "European English" and "North American English" (as the divide between Canadian English and US English is considered to be minimal at best).

Of all the UK celebrity cameos, the only one that really makes sense is Clarkson in Cars because, well, he's most known for hosting a car show. So it just makes sense to cast him in that film. Jamie Oliver in Ratatouille kind of makes sense but its weird they have him use a French accent. Speaking of whole British dubs there was supposedly a British Dub of Powerpuff Girls that aired on Channel 5. It was short lived as apparently people wrote in complaining about the voices being different so there's barely any footage about it, making people unsure if it actually existed or not.
