Newcastle United have qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. But after a mid-season wobble that saw them slip out of the top 4, Eddie Howe made a small but vital adjustment to their tactics that put them back on track.

Toon fan here, saw some naysayers criticising him for the spending breaches at Bournemouth. What happened with that? Was it Howe's doing or the owners?
@dddgtsd
@dddgtsd Жыл бұрын
@@Tarks_Coady_EFC exactly, saw a comment somewhere saying that Bournemouth had some financial irregularities during their rise through the divisions. I know they did have a very wealthy owner. So I've found that they were fined 35k for anti-doping breach, basically they made some inaccurate claims in their finances, basically sounds like the owners were putting more money in than they should. 35k fine seems ridiculous for that though so it must have been very minor. Also...not sure how involved in that Howe is so it shouldn't sour the achievements he had there.
@dddgtsd
@dddgtsd Жыл бұрын
@@Tarks_Coady_EFC ok found something else, where were you searching cos if you google 'Bournemouth fined breach' it all comes up. They were fined 7.6m for breaching FFP. They basically reported a loss that was more than twice their turnover when they won the Championship with Howe. Not quite City levels deviation but clearly either worked out that the gamble was worth it if it got them promoted (7m fine is a drop in the ocean if you get promoted) or they just completely fudged their numbers and miscalculated how much they spent.

Against Brighton Miggy actually managed a few progressive carries from deep and therefore had one of his best games, but he doesn’t do it consistently. Also think that the reason they bought Gordon which no one understands is that he can carry from deep and press high and has natural first touch. He is a ways from putting it all together but I reckon it will be another brilliant move.

Gordon is actually objectively bad at dribbling when you look at his stats. From what i’ve seen he works better as an inverted winger that gets involved in the intricate play (see bournmeouth (A) and west ham (H) games). I didn’t like the signing but hope he comes good for us

This is outstanding analysis. As a season ticket holder who also travels away a fair bit, I’ve been aware of our change in style but not really been able to explain quite what I’m seeing. This video does it perfectly. It also makes me feel a bit better about the loss of all those lovely clean sheets and shows that we have the personnel to play a style which potentially sacrifices them for ultimately better results. Huge respect to Howe as well. To be able to see an issue developing and address it on the fly shows the effort and diligence that goes into his work. Thanks for the video, brilliant 👏

The 433 formation transforms into a 343 formation the moment Trippier has the ball. And that allows Murphy/Miggy to move much deeper into the offense.

Actually we very rarely see BDB staying back to allow that change in shape these days. If anything we're so comfortable in possession now that Eddie's happy for Bruno to just sit deep and allow Schar and Botman to push up alongside him on the off chance they (although mostly Schar) can get on the ball and be an extra man.

You think it would be the bare minimum of a Premiership manager but it's just so refreshing to have a manager who seems to genuinely think long and hard about the tactics and what he does on the training ground. Rafa played dull football (he did have limited resources) but I thought the same with him, he seemed to at least have a game plan, under Bruce though it just felt like he was throwing 11 lads out there and telling them to do their best. I'm not his biggest critic but it was clear until Jones came in, there wasn't really any philosophy or plan. The way Howe manages should be more common but it's sadly not, there is no complacency with him. He constantly wants to improve himself and the players and I hope he stays with the club for as long as possible.
@adamcleryFFT
@adamcleryFFT Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's astonishing to me how rare this sort of philosophical flexibility is. Even the managers you think of as quite innovative tend to have really rigid ideas of how they want their teams to play. It's understandable to a degree because on the training ground it must be a *lot* easier to work on one approach and hope that gets you through, but I guess that's just how the job is changing.
@dddgtsd
@dddgtsd Жыл бұрын
@@adamcleryFFT true but I do think a lot of the top managers do a lot of tinkering that we don't see, just because they're not changing the formation, or system completely, people like Pep, Klopp, ETH, Arteta will be making minor adjustmens much like Howe. Howe has had to do them on a more obvious scale though with the lack of talent he was working with at times. I love the bloke's commitment though, top manager.

I also noticed that once we came back from the world cup break, every team had kinda figured out our "overload the right side" attack style so Eddie switched it up a bit. We were figured out and our players had no idea what to do other than feed it to Miggy and Tripps for a cross. 2 years ago, we had one of the worst possession percentages in the league, and all of a sudden, teams were backing up for us. We had to learn what to do with the possession this year (Even though those percentages were still kind of low).

Good that Murphy is getting a bit of credit I felt once he got him a run in the team we looked less predictable as with him and Joelinton on the other side they kept the width which allowed more space for Isak and Bruno in the middle With Almiron he was always cutting inside and not using his right foot was really easy for defenders to deal with but its good to have options

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Murphy and have been delighted to see him turn his career around here. As for Almiron, he's got everything in his locker to be really important for us next season, but how we use him will largely have to depend on what we're coming up against. Leicester were just showing him outside or forcing him to run into a massively congested edge of the box and there's very little he can do in that situation.

@@adamcleryFFT That made me actually LoL (not figuratively). OK, here’s my ten pence….. Eddie Howe (praise be his name) uses a different form of the Gegenpress in that he uses the ‘swarm the bastards’ variant and not the ‘choke the bastards’ type. Choke type is what Citeh do i.e. they choke off the routes the defender can use to play the ball forward. The Toon under Eddie Howe (praise be his name) just close the player down. However……. Against BHA instead of the usual ‘swarm’ press, Eddie Howe (praise etc, etc - you get the idea) used the choker!! Brighton continually played poor, aimless, misplaced balls forward and just handed possession back to Newcastle ……. for us to score! Yay. The fact that BHA had no plan B (first corner - 87 mins) showed how dominated they were. Even when they apparently ‘got back into the game’ they didn’t really - the anxiety was all from us (the fans). BHA actually didn’t really threaten our goal at all. One poor shot on target, I think was all. (Much as I like their manager - I think there’s quite a lot of sunshine getting blown where sunshine isn’t usually found in his case!? He’s not a patch on Eddie Howe - pbhn).

I think it was simply the intensity, duration and speed of the press, Brighton imho are brilliant to watch as they will pass most teams cross eyed. But most teams have a bit of a "soft" press inasmuch as they kind of amble up to a get near to a Brighton player, expecting the lay off. They will do this for three four passes then slack off with a bit of "ok you can keep it". Whereas the NUFC press was intense and at pace and held until the coughed it up, they got right into player after player forcing the erroneous pass which we mopped up. We did that constantly throughout the game denying them time and space. Once the game as such was over we slackened off a little and they then get into their rhythm, getting a goal but it was academic by then.

As someone who watches Newcastle week in week out, I think you missed a lot of key points. We fell off after the Carabou Cup final because Bruno was on a 3 game suspension and we couldnt control the game nearly as well. As for Murphy vs. Almiron, Almiron had a serious injury and missed a few months. Murphy did well, but Almiron got his chances and could find his pre WC form. The one thing you didn't mention at all was the back line. We were able to have so much flexibility because we had Botman and Dan Burn who were unbelievable and gigantic. Dan Burn very much acted as 3rd CB to allow Trippier to get higher up, but as we went through the season and we pressed so well, he was able to push higher forward, and he's deceivingly good on the ball. Nick Pope being a top quality sweeper keeper helped a lot too, which, between him and Dan Burn and Botman winning every header, it became a lot easier to press higher up the pitch.

I stopped reading when you said Dan Burn is good on the hall. He is solid defender but horrible in progressive play. Very uncomfortable on the ball and takes too long to make a predictable pass (most often backwards). We need a significant upgrade at LB. Burn can be 3rd choice CB.

Not entirely convinced by this. Some great ideas but I need to see a bit more data to agree with the conclusion. Almiron was only out because he was injured, since he's been fit he's been worked back into the team. Joelinton has started every game he's been available, so the changed line up is wrong. Many of our best recent performances were with the Joelinton/Willock interchange and Wilson or Isak coming off the bench. The infographic on where they won the ball and the chances created was interesting but to prove the point you should've shown the difference of where they're now winning the ball and creating chances (maybe something on the difference in chance value, ie are they creating better chances now). Because it feels we were still pressing high in recent matches, Brighton being the best example.

Smart analysis. Howe showed how tactically aware he is, and that will be essential for us next season in Europe. It's likely he'll need to add another couple of systems to his portfolio to deal with European clubs and lower league teams in the cups, as I think the Shed Wed game highlighted another weak point. An excellent season - couldn't be happier than having Howe as our manager. I think a worthy comparison of past greats is Howe is like a combination of Bobby Robson and Kevein Kegan. He has the same drive to play attacking football like Keagan and ability to elevate players above their abilities, but tempered with Bobby's ability to perform under pressure and adapt to get to the next level.

Gonna be honest, after the last half of last year, and the first half of this year, there table position was 2nd. This was never a fluke, once Eddie Howe showed this team how to play football again, rebuilt their confidence, and then plugged some very obvious holes in the spine of the team, this was a team of CL footballers. Goes to show how important finding the right coach is, and how truly hopeless Ashley and Bruce were. Actually a bit disapointed that their form fell off post WC break a bit and they were too happy with draws against lower teams, because if they believed in themselves a bit more they'd have been in the title race. Not complaining though, now write a blank check for Neymar and Alphonso Davies and lets fucking win the whole thing next year!

Miggy is a running contradiction. He loves nothing more than chasing a ball in behind the defence... only to always cut back and losing the benefit of getting in behind
@dddgtsd

it's because he plays as an inside forward/inverted winger being a left footer on the right but he is way too reliant on his left foot, made me laugh when Hinchcliffe said the other day 'he can go on his left and on his right' which isn't necessarily true, like you say always cuts back on his left. Would be interesting to see him play on the left wing but his relationship with Tripps and Bruno down the right is too good.
