South Africa executed their game plan perfectly converting pressure into points....staying calm and resolute in defense...playing a full twenty three man game...rather than fifteen men plus subs...it was classic upfront bok rugby with a twist going wide

I see a lot of comments about how ENG would have been unstoppable had they played RSA like they did NZ, or how RSA did not deserve the win because they lost to NZ in the pool game, or even how the loss in the pool was part of the plan. Here is the thing, RSA still holds the best winning margin against NZ, with NZ beating them 59% of the time, beating AUS 69% of the time, and ENG in 4th under the Lions they beat 78% of the time. That's exactly why most NZ's hold RSA to this day as their greatest adversary. I understand those stats are all time but it does paint a picture. RSA has started to figure out NZ again, in the 3 years leading up to the World Cup they managed a home win, an away draw, and an away win. NZ also never quite looked as imposing in 2019 as other years and I think consistency was an issue for them as well, as they also lost to AUS 47-26 in 2019 and AUS were nowhere in the World Cup. So past results might have a place, but don't say much when it comes to knock out rugby. Don't forget the IRL victory in 2018 16-9, how did they look against NZ? But and it's a big but, if ENG played the best game of rugby against NZ in the semi, the best game anyone has played in years, how is it reasonable to believe that they would have ever managed to repeat that performance as it was always going to be the exception to the rule, no matter who they played that day. The thing is the pool results don't matter, the first prise is getting into the QF, after that you need to peak at the right time. NZ has a history of losing in World Cup playoff games as favorites. RSA has never lost a final. RSA could/should have beaten NZ in the 2015 SF, would they have won the final, who knows it's impossible to say. RSA was robed against AUS in 2011 QF, would they have beaten (In my mind a very average NZ, that really struggled in the SF and final) and beaten an even worst FRA in the final, who knows? The issue is that it's difficult to repeat those performances week in and week out and knock out phases are brutal. Some say RSA had the easy route, really? The WLS games was brutal and ENG dismantled NZ by half time? Mabey it was because NZ played IRL the week before, o but the same thing happened thereafter 40min. No one would have beaten NZ on the day they played IRL, no one would beat ENG on the day they played NZ and no one would have beaten RSA in the final, that's my take, they all peaked at separate times and the results speak for themselves. 3 Great teams and the best 3 in the World Cup in my opinion. As good as ENG were in the SF, I don't think any team would have stopped RSA in the final, it's just one of those days where the opposition has there tails up and everything is going there way and most importantly peaking in the FINAL! Would have been a brutal game had that happened tough

Best you learn the difference. You are however quite right about Englands resounding defeat by the 2nd biggest margin in RWC history not being Marler's fault. England were out tought and out muscled across the park and SA were superior in practically every position. Does that make England a poor team? Ofcourse not. @@tonysa2337 Don't let a kiwi commentator do your thinking for you. First scrum after Marler came on he dominated his opposite number and SA went backwards. Garces still gave the pen to the boks (force of habit from the first half) but that was unjustified and SA were dominated. 2nd scrum Marler again dominated the guy opposite. On the other side Kitshoff didn't slip but put his knee down after pressure was applied not before. That's part of scrummaging. Trying to say that the scrum doesn't count because of that is just ridiculous. After those 2 scrums, SA realised the strategy of holding the ball in the scrum and going for a pen was no longer on and so for the rest of the time the just got the ball out quick. That's the point, Marler's intervention nullified that aspect of their game plan and forced them to change, which the did brilliantly in fairness. All I'm saying is that in Marler's case Woodward's criticism was unjustified given his performance. In Cole's case it was more than justified, although Cole also struggled because Mako was poor on the day too.

So the 60% is really 30% and is therefore mega mid-leading. It’s like saying that all NBA players need degrees because 99% of them got scholarships to college due to their sport talent. It’s about the sporting ability - not the education, class or upbringing. Therefore it’s a actually very diverse from their parents, background etc. But then that doesn’t fit the popular ‘posh kids’ narrative from 70s and 80s thats muppets believe, does it now?? 😂 😂 😂

They were raving how a hammering for Iceland was on the cards. Not! Eddie is class and doesn't deserve that type of comeback you train and prepare but the players didn't deliver and south Africa totally dominated and were stronger in every aspect. First scrum was a red light. In the warm up Mitchell confirmed his fears. Sa were men englamd were boys......arrogance is an English thing.

It wasn’t complacency but the performance against NZ was the best performance I’ve seen by any team and had England reproduced that performance then SA wouldn’t have had a chance. England played their final a week earlier against NZ and i think they mentally switched off for the Final. The 2019 Boks will not go down as one of the greats. The were big bruisers, a tight five on the bench and got a lot of luck. Also, Ireland were not favourites for the Feb game in Twickenham and were not talking all week. Just Jones being a prat

'the 2019 Boks will not go down as one of the greats'... Probably not, but they'll be remembered for many other reasons leading up to the World Cup and then going on to win it. Would you have said the same if England had won? You're right, England weren't switched on for the final, everyone wrote off the Boks ....media, pundits, reporters...and I think it got to the players too. Boks making their 3rd final and winning it for a 3rd time. Its called big match temperament, teams won't write them off again. Will they?

Why a knob? He's right. South Africa didn't reach any heights beating Wales. Yes it was physically, yes it was a grind, but both teams were more than willing to enter into an arm wrestle rather than take a gamble and open the game up. What we witnessed was a fantastic physically battle interspersed with error strewn passing and handling and poor kicking. Neither team could of come off that pitch thinking wow we couldn't of played any better, whereas the opposite would of been true of England, and that what gatland was getting at.

The simple fact is South Africa had an easy run to the final and played to their best in that match. England couldn't replicate their own level of performance from the previous week. This is the nature of a World Cup. Are South Africa the best team in the world? Absolutely not, as proved by NZ in the same world cup. Are SA better than England? Absolutely not, but they were better on the day that it mattered. The disappointment still lingers - but that's sport.
@merlotonthego6412

So Graham, based on your analogy South Africa won because we had an easier run to the final compared to England (which is quite farfetched considering a world class Welsh side we faced in the semis and England facing a very ill-prepared Wallabies side in the quarters) and because England didn’t show up in the final (which they only have themselves to blame). But no credit to the Springboks and Rassie for outsmarting the English on every aspect of the game? The fact of the matter is every team in the top 5/6 of world rankings has a shot against another top 5/6 side in rugby - it all comes down to execution, sticking to your gameplan and proper prep. South Africa outsmarted England from the first minute. And when our gameplan started working on the day, England’s gameplan completely fell apart. And there was no plan B (bad prep). Dan Cole wasn’t up for that game. Neither was Ben Youngs, George Ford or Owen Farrel as soon as the English gameplan faltered. South Africa showed up. England didn’t. And that’s that.

@@merlotonthego6412 you just summarised pretty much what I said. South africa played far better on the day. They won. Would they have beaten NZ in a final? No they wouldn't have. But that's the beauty of sport. You're right, the top 4 or 5, on their day, can all beat each other. But a route of Aus and NZ is far more challenging than Japan wales. Come on. Wales are not world class and never have been, they've never reached a world cup final. As Jones said, SA didnt need to get out of second gear to beat them. South africa deserved to win the final, for sure. But are they the best team in the world? No. Normal service will be resumed for NZ when the rugby championship starts.

@@merlotonthego6412 By what metric do you justify comparing England to SA in terms of rugby pedigree? Name just one. England are not remotely on the level of SA when it comes to overall record and RWC's in particular. SA: 3 RWC titles in 7 attempts England: 1 RWC title in 9 attempts. In the 1999 RWC final the Springboks outplayed England in practically every position, were a far more cohesive unit and were far better coached. By the way, in 2018, SA beat England in 2-1 in a test series and trounced them in RWC final, so even based on recent record SA are the better team. The gap grows even bigger if one looks at the overall record.
