Eddie Sweat was the groom for Quill, Ambroid, Riva Ridge, Secretariat, and Chiefs Crown among so many others. Eddie would find an opportunity to escape rural South Carolina when Lucien Laurin would offer him a job.

Had the pleasure of being a friend for a time. Great story teller, great laugh. Sometimes lonely life, wouldn't have traded it for anything else I know. RIP Shorty ✌️

Eddie saved Secretariat's life more than once, nursing him 24/7. Without that love + dedication, we might not have seen Secretariat's greatness. I was born + raised in Louisville. Our friend, Dr. Larry Scanlan was picked by Lauren to examine Secretariat before the Derby + prove his soundness. Larry said jokingly, " you'll find out how bad his knees are (on Derby Day).Larry + I were both on the far turn (judges tower + on the fence) for Secretariat's Derby.I knew Secretariat and Riva. They were two of the smartest, kindest, people-loving horses. Fun to be around, loved to play games. They probably got that from Eddie.

Eddie was the Best and bonded as a God given gift and his love and care for Secretariat and for all of the horses 🐎 that he surrounded himself with and will always be remembered so greatly for ..he was actually the forerunner for Secretariat from his humble and sweet care, and love for this horse and played an extremely important role for such an amazing horse such as Secretariat ❤️ 👏

Thank you for this video. I don’t think people giving up credit to the grooms I believe that any sweat was secretariats friend as well as his groom and I think when they separated the end, they both got hurt.

Wish Eddie took Seth Hancock up on his offer to stay at Claiborne farm when he retired there....things would've ended differently for both.

It sounded like the narrator was pronouncing Riva Ridge as river ridge. I have Bill Nacks book on Secretariat. A very good read.

Grooms never get the credit they deserve.. I've been fortunate to work with some good ones... there's an art to it and much more than people realize.... that groom has his or her hands on that horse every day... usually not the trainer.

Is wasn't River, it was Riva Ridge! Riva was my pick for the classics in 72. I wanted him to beat the crap out of his stablemate in the 73 Marlboro Cup. Oh, well. But, he's still my favourite today. So please pronounce his name correctly.

@@sheilatruax6172 I didn’t mean to imply you said he bought them. I’m pointing out what’s to me a very poignant part of the story and totally not understood by the public. Having big budgets and buying dozens of two year olds is the common way to get a stakes win. Christopher C. was akin to an American Tesio. If you’re unfamiliar, look up Frederico Tesio. The tragedy of his dream of breeding a derby winner so magnificently fulfilled just when he can’t be part of it is a big unknown to many.
