If I'm not wrong he did a film version of this. The police show up at the door and he tries to act normal until he loses it. He made so many Poe movies and was brilliant in all of them.:o)

Obviously Edgar Allan Poe is a genius and one of the most influential writers ever, but this is a performance of Vincent Price. I think that may be the reason why so few comments relate to Poe. I have to agree - the story is amazing, but Vincent Price narrating it is another story in itself.

When I was younger I was fascinated by a certain gentleman. He wrote morbid tales of psyche and horror. Another gentleman I was intrigued with was an actor, who was able to capture the thoughts, the horror, the psyche, he was able to channel the mind of the writer, and portray it to the metaphorical tee. This actor once did a show on television (or a movie, twas a long time ago), and I saw this portrayal as well as others. I was in horror heaven. Thank you so much for sharing this!

It makes you wonder if he had dementia or he had delusions but a slim grasp of reality and then once he began to have a concrete object in real life to fixate upon the other man's glass eye he developed an obsession where he finally had a true break with reality. This was a masterful story of losing oneself to madness while you in the beginning are aware you should not find something or someone so threatening yet unable to stopping the delusion from taking over your whole life and mind. It is a heartbreaking tale because the narrator is struggling to hold onto a slender thread of his sanity and he can't stop his progression into true madness, all while appearing as if nothing is wrong. What makes this story so good is the man fights so hard against his delusion even as he begins to lose himself in the struggle.

Poe's stories are so powerful and complex as texts that I had no idea they were also such utter and awesome theatre. It's mind boggling. This is a whole new dimension for me of Poe's writing. This (so far as I can tell) literal, word for word reading is one of Vincent Price's greatest interpretations. This was a great 2 part post, thanks Mirkodamian For another intense reading of Poe's poetry as theatre try Gavin Friday's reading of FOR ANNIE here on KZfaq
