There is scarcely, if at all, a ventriloquist alive who does not owe Edgar Bergen a debt. One of my inspirations.

Magic! Met him when I was 11yrs old one year before he died! He was awesome! After the show it was my Dad and me and Edgar with his son Kris smiling on the side....my autograph and memory hang on my wall!

As he says here (re: applause) "That's what actors live on." He obviously LOVED to perform, and did so whenever and wherever there was an audience who appreciated his talent. I went to see him shortly before he passed away. The show was at the Centre Stage Dinner Theater, in Milwaukee. Three college friends and I heard he was performing, so we went to the 'late' (after dinner) show. Despite the fact that there were only about a dozen people who showed up, he did his entire show, for us. He invited us to grab chairs and join him on the stage. Up close and Personal. What a MEMORABLE night it was. After the show ended, we got his autograph, and he let us shake hands with Charlie. He was a truly GREAT performer, who inspired many others, who followed in his footsteps.

Grambag, Mr Bergen was in his 70's when he did this. Pretty 95% chance that the ventriloquist you see today would not exist if it hadn't been for Edgar Bergen. I bet they got interested in the art watching him or by watching someone else who saw or heard him.

It was great seeing Edgers shows again, those were the days. It is good ventriloquists are making a comeback, some of them are doing exceptionally well, with rare talents like, Darci, Factor, Jeff and a English guy that won the talent contest, can't remember his name though. Thank you for uploading this show from my, wayyy past☮️

My teenage friends and myself spent a summer (1952) doing Long Beach and the Boardwalk and Hollywood's daytime matinees that taped some of their shows. We took in Edgar Bergen's show one afternoon. Had a full audience. His skits were hilarious. We were raised in the San Gabriel Valley (Rosemead). Miss that kind of fun a lot.

The figures were developed characters. He too, played a character. He did all of this with ease: smoothly. The scripts were great. But the difference was that it wasn’t just a guy showing off that he could do ventriloquism, it was a true comedy team!

I was fortunate to see him perform live in my hometown in the early 70s. My mom loved him on the radio so she made sure we go to see him. I loved all the characters, Charlie, Mortimer, and Effie. He was still terrific, even this late in his career.

To the people bashing him because his lips moved, he was a pioneer in ventriloquism. You wouldn't have people like Jeff Dunham without him.

I recently bought replicas of Charlie McCarthy & Mortimer Snerd made by the Goldberger Company.These doll were modified by the artist Kevin Detweiler. This week I made about 4 videos. Please let me know what you think. I have great respect for Edgar and his amazing ventriloquist skills.

The show was on a HBO show it had all puppets and I was about 14 years old now 49.

I saw an interview with Edgar's daughter, actress Candice Bergen who said that when she was a little girl, she thought those dummies were real people.

As a kid I always found ventriloquists somewhat scary. And especially the puppets.

Yes, we grew up watching him along with others on the old B & W tv..I guess he forgot he was on tv and not the radio, but we loved him anyway! lol......He had a great bunch of voices, along with the tv shows. His daughter, Candace I thought once said she felt like she was one of the puppets at times. haha. Never talked to her. I can't remember what she said, other than she didn't like the puppets.

Grambag that is understandable , but the reason that Bergen was so popular despite his lips moving, was because he was so funny. This was a lot better than many other ventrloquists in Bergen's time in Vaudeville and other areas who could talk while drinking a glass of water and other stunts, but that was it, they were not that funny. With Bergen, you listened to the words of his dummies, and ignored Bergen's imperfections in moving his lips because he was so funny

No one ever topped Bergen.

Radio then movies then he was on television. Nobody worried about his lips moving. They liked his jokes. You might look up Charlie and his encounter with Mae West.

Tom Snyder once asked Bergen how it was that he got away with moving his lips all these years. He said he wanted to be honest about where the sound was coming from. Good as answer as any, I guess. Look, if you can do ventriloquism on the radio why not tap dancing?

I fail to see why he was so highly rated in America. Extreme closeups (which never seemed to happen) and which were concentrated solely on the face of the Mr Bergen, would show lip movements hence semi long shots. We in Britain, had two vents who could have full face closeups and not show the slightest trace of lip movement. I refer of course, to Ray Allen and Arthur Worsley. To refer to Mr Bergen as `The Grand Master` after a lifetime of experience in which he still had visible lip movements, is at best, patronising to his memory and at worst, insulting to Messrs Allen and Worsley. I would respectfully suggest, that the author of the short article looks on You Tube for examples of the skill of the two vents that I have mentioned.
