Nicks Overlander | Accepting the HNW doesn’t fit

After owning these Nicks Overlanders for about 10 months, I’ve finally just accepted they don’t fit well. The toe box has been a problem on my right foot since the beginning and it never resolved.
I think the sensible thing to do is move on from this boot.

I can’t stress enough that boot makers need to make more foot shaped boots. The Thurman is a step in the right direction.

There is also no excuse. Whites, Nicks, Franks all these companies have banks behind them. All then need to do is fund a college to do a Military & General Public PhD Podioatrist led MRI boot lasting study. Get 15,000k People nationwide find out the perfect dimentions and make this work. This is easy. Mr Muson did this a very long time ago. And now we have MRI and fancy PhD people....

as an asian who wears fiipflops and slip ons all the time, only the thurman last would work for me. got tons of toe splay and wide feet.

Thanks a lot for your video, comments and reflexions, helps me a lot for my decision regarding Nicks acquisition. I wear 350 Cruiser and Cutter in White's 11.5 D. I'm a Brannock 12, but in shoes I'm between 11 and 11.5, but prefer to wear 11.5 D as I'm feeling more confortable. Definitely I'll stay with 55 or 67 last in Nicks as HMW or Thurman last seams to be quite difficult to size and fit them right.

@@OnuthTHURURSTROMTAL ya sizing for everyone is different. I can’t tell people what they should get, but only what has and has not worked for me. Yes the HNW didn’t work for my feet at all. Was very frustrating, but moving on was necessary.

@EDHBlvd Sorry to hear that, as I've said I'll stay on lasts that I have and know how they are fitting to avoid any surprises, mainly with boots that take 6 months to be built.

Thanks for putting out this advice and insight on the last and sizing. Wide 55 last on my feet feels good and I was thinking of trying the HNW but I think I might look at the Thurman just because I do enjoy having toe room.

You’re welcome. It’s odd as I don’t even have wide feet. I’m a D on brannock. Never had any weird issues with boot fit until PNW boots.

I completely agree on the HNW last. Ordered my first pair in 11.5 A. Too short and maybe a little narrow with the steel toe. I can’t wear the high arch and my size is true to size. I wear a 12B in all my shoes and my builder pros are also 12B. They fit correct and feel amazing in 1964 walnut. I do have an 11D upper because of my smaller calf. Wish they had the Thurman NW in a 12 B, but the HNW last works on my foot

Are your Thurman boots that fit in the same size as the HNW that don't fit? I have a pair of Thurman on the way since I had the same issue - HNW in my size squishes my toes on one foot. I chose the same size for the Thurman boot since I've heard a lot about how much more accommodating it is in that area so I'm hoping there's a decent enough difference.

Yes the ThurmanNW solved all the issues with the HNW. I sold them because of the 10” height. I found it too hardcore. However I’ve finally just accepted that the HNW doesn’t work. Need to move these on. If my Thurman’s had been an 8” boot I would have kept them.

I remember talking with you about the 55 last and how a half size down from brannock was just to tight, So I started doing my brannock size with the 55 last and it fits better. I know this video is on the HNW though, haven't tried that last yet. My heel to ball is an 11 but my brannock is a 10.5D, that's why I started going down a half size from my heel to ball or true to size brannock so flex points lined up etc, that really helps with cap toes especially.

That’s a good point. However I can go down to 11 in most non-PNW boots. I also fit the 67 and 55 in 11E. It’s just the HNW that really seems to run short.

@@EDHBlvd Im definitely going to try the HNW at some point, Probably with the nicks americana model, but Il go true to size for sure. My toes aren't long so I most likely wont encounter some of the same issues you and bushradical had hopefully.

@@Justin-pu7qi if you go true to size you’ll likely avoid too. Going half down from brannock is what got me I think.

@@EDHBlvd I do think the half size down everyone talks about is bad advice, I think people should go true to size (atleast with their first pair of good boots) and work from there. Much easier to fill up volume with an in sole, kilites for instep and thick socks, vs a small boot that will never fit.

I have the same issue with my Predator orange Overlanders. I have a 8" builder pro tan, but i went 1/2 size bigger and fit way better. Both boots are HNW last.

I have 4 pairs of nicks in HNW. Robert, builders,Pullman, 365 weather shield. I love them all except the weather shield, just soo boring looking, and the least fun till you need em in the rain. 😊 I ordered them all half size smaller like they suggested and a C width. Perfect fit each time! oh and I just placed an order for W&C mto walnut, Vbar 6”, last night. 9 months bro! 😎

@@EDHBlvd I did! They are badd ass but I just can’t buy green boots man. I’ll just enjoy them from afar lol. I gravitate towards the darker shades, Hnw, low heel. I don’t like to pop out. I’m short and don’t wanna high heel cuz “I’m trying to appear taller” lol.

@@gregmartinez5836 ya I felt the same about tall heels but I’ve come to peace with it. However my back still doesn’t like the super tall heels. Those 2 Packers I own are a little too much.

I have the 55 last and HNW. They both fit great. Different feel and support but both feel good. I do wear the same boot for 6-8 months straight. So they really mold to my feet.

I’ve been wanting to try that Munson or 67 last. Big fan of my 55 last, but I did a mto Robert with a low dogger heel.

We all have different feet. A lot of bootmakers say that you should wear boots a 1/2 size down from your sneaker size. Which doesn't mean a thing. Every sneaker company could be different too. And a 1/2 size is usually about 1/8 or 1/16". The most difficult part is ordering shoes in the mail. You can't try on. You go to a shoe store, and you are able to try on different shoes in different sizes.

Omg yes. I’ve seen companies say “half down from your normal size”. What does that even mean. Haha

@@EDHBlvd The shoe will be 1/16" shorter. That could mean your toes will have less wiggle room.

Sorry the boots didn't work out for you. As you said, they are gorgeous boots. I agree with everything you've mentioned for your feet. I agree with you that the Thurman is the toe box for you. I believe a lot of sizing issues are dependent upon foot width. I have flat (so the HNW is the perfect arch support), narrow feet. One is B width and the other, due to a bit of a bunion, is C. My brannock size is 10.5. Both of my Nicks boot models are 10C and fit me perfectly. I sure wish your boots would fit me. I'd love to have them. Good luck selling them. I think they'll go fast.

That’s interesting you did different widths. I think if I had an 11.5D or E for the right foot, the HNW could work. But I don’t see point in doing odd custom sizing with that Last, when I have superior fit out of the box with the 67. It’s a better shape for my foot.

@@EDHBlvd I wasn't clear or you misread my reply. All of my Nicks boots are 10C. I asked them about doing 2 widths and they advised against it, saying it'd likely cause more problems than necessary. They fit great. I just lace the B width foot ever so slightly tighter. 🙂

@@rickc4317 that’s good info about not doing mismate sizing. It’s funny some guys in comments suggesting custom last. Way too much work when other boots fit fine. My issue is the HNW.

@@EDHBlvd No, not too loose at all. The boot on the narrower foot is just laced slightly tighter. I can just see a very small difference in how close together the lace holes across the tongue are. The 2 boots feel the same.

On my Roberts I wear a 10.5E, and could probably even go for a 10.5EE. I feel like the 11E (my Brannock size) would be perfect with these guys. I would gladly take these off your hands for you! I'll shoot you an email.

Exchange only works early on. If you continue to wear them you can’t exchange.

Before you sell your boots, try sending your boots to a REPUTABLE cobbler to have them try and stretch them out so they fit you, plus they should break in a bit after too!

They are the wrong shape for my foot and too short. Stretching isn’t going to resolve this. I posted photos of the footbed of this HNW compared to the ThurmanNW. You can see how much my big toe is pushed inward on them. There is literally no place for my big toe to go in this Last. It’s too short.

Nope. This last is just a bad fit. These were already sloppy in heel. Going to EE would be ridiculous. I don’t need a EE in the 67 or 55 Lasts.

You might want to consider getting sized again. Use the brannock yourself, both feet flat in medium socks, midday when your feet have swollen to full size

I own a brannock. My size didn’t change. The HNW runs shorter and with smaller toe box than the 67/55. Others have reported the same.

@@EDHBlvd no, get yourself a pair of grant stone brass boots. Theyre alden indys but better built and half the price. I have PNW boots. Indys, and grant stone. We have the same size and issues with boots. The grant stones fit me so good the first time i put my foot in, it made a suction sound. 11E. If you dont like them ill buy them off you.

@@MrKinghuman I’m good with the 67 in 11E. That’s what I’m sticking with. Also plan to try the Thurman55. The HNW is just a weird Last. I wanted the GS Brass Boot in Essex but slept on it and they discontinued.

@@EDHBlvd do you my man. Took me two years of contemplting going chinese. Since chinese shoes ruined my feet. But i saw it was american owned with amercan leather, took a chance amd was surprised. When shoes hurt, ylur entire body hurts.
