Trains at Edinburgh Waverley station and buses on Princess Street Edinburgh as seen on a short visit in the 1990s.
I had intended to be there for about 5 hours but the InterCity 225 train from London failed (broke down) and I arrived in Edinburgh just 90 minutes before the last train back to London.
Also seen is a Network SouthEast liveried thunderbird class 47 (47 587) locomotive

Edinburgh was such a better place in the 90s than it is now.

What a cracking wee video. The quality is quite good for video and you can actually hear engines properly. It's a shame things worked out the way they did because it would have been great if you had got more film. Thank you for sharing

Thanks. I was very sad that I effectively lost the whole day because the train broke down.

+Train Maniac It was bitter-sweet. I was surprised to see anything in NSE livery that far away from southern England, but I was on the train that it rescued and instead of arriving in Edinburgh at about midday I arrived at 4pm, with just 90 minutes available before I had to catch the last train back to London.

Must of been a right pain. ;) The 90's was the age of failed trains and poor maintenance, despite it i do miss that decade....

+Train Maniac I miss the 70's, even though I was a schoolboy at the time. There are trains which I did not film with a super 8 cine camera that I now very much regret.

Brilliant video, it's so nice to go back in time to see things the way they were. I'm a frequent visitor to Edinburgh and I can safely say that Princes St is no longer as congested as shown, thank goodness. The only thing that hasn't changed is the crowds of people and the many buses that serve the city. I often lose myself in Edinburgh Waverley for a time doing a bit of spotting, and due to the lack of ticket barriers at most platforms, am able to properly watch trains come in and out of said platforms. It was a bit unusual to see a 150 coupled to a 158, I know they're both of the sprinter family, but it just didn't look right. It would be nice if you could do one of your contrast videos using this footage compared to what Edinburgh looks like now, although I am aware you're primarily London based.

Thanks for your comments. Yes I am London based but it would be nice to return to Edinburgh and film some present-day scenes. Including the trams! I am not sure that this will be possible this year 2018 but I will try to do this next year.

citytransportinfo the congestion was terrible. Like really bad. Considering nearly every bus went through there at some point it became a real problem.

+Abbie Archer ah! yes now I understand. Now of course you have clean electric trams along Princess Street. Its a shame that the buses are still diesels, as these waste gases are known to be harmful for health. With trolleybuses your buses could become as clean, environmentally sound and city friendly as the trams!

We have hybrid buses on some routes like the 12 and the 1.

+Abbie Archer Hybrid buses are still diesels... they still use diesel engines. Only pure electric buses can be as clean, non polluting and city friendly as your trams. Since batteries cannot power a bus for a full day so the optimal solution is to use trolleybuses. A growing number of cities are also using what is known as SlideIn recharging where the trolleybuses also have powerful batteries so that they can operate as part-time battery electric buses and extend the benefits of electric traction to bus routes which are not wired for trolleybuses.
