This is absolutely outstanding. Only a truly great singer can risk to act like Olympia, the Doll in a bel canto mad scene. The effect of madness, despair and waiver is remarkable. Top notch singing from a great soprano.

Edita Gruberova is one of the best sopranos ever. Her voice is simply spectacular. Still with 64 y.o. !!!! This has not discusion. I saw this performance in Munich 2007 and when someone decide to stay stand and ovation for more than 30 min. is for something special. I never saw something similar with nobody at any opera theather. It wasn't the 'crazy fans', was the whole theather. Incredible. Brava!

Pero también que tenga la fortuna que Gruberova no tuvo: estudiar Arte Dramático...en general los y las cantantes de Ópera no nos hemos caracterizado por ser bueno o " por lo menos decentes actores (SIN SOBREACTUAR COMO EN ESTE VIDEO)...sin mencionar lo musical...!!

@@xavierbarcelo916el teatro es casi siempre un poco "sobreactuado " , y la ópera no deja de ser una obra de teatro cantada. Y en cuanto a la Gruberova... es perfecta en esta escena de locura. Pocas se le acercan en esta opera. Al final todos los cantantes brillan mas en unas operas que en otras, pero hay que reconocer que en escenas de "locura", la Gruberova es magnifica.

Cette femme est une merveille absolue! Sa scène finale de Roberto Deveureux en concert, de 2017 à 72 ans, est une leçon de chant basée sur une technique inouïe, la voix est encore invraisemblable, puissante, d'une expressivité à couper le souffle, elle prend des risques qu'aucune actuellement n'oserait prendre, même les plus grandes, qui feraient bien de s'en inspirer, pour peut-être un jour être son ombre.

Ésta si que es una verdadera Elisabetta en su justa medida, sin empalagar ni sin quedarse corta en la interpretación....con una fantástica facilidad para los agudos que en ésta obra son difíciles y que decir que pocas sopranos como la Gruberova cumplen con el agudo final como tiene que ser.... pienso a gusto personal que esta grabación de Roberto Devereux es la mejor que se ha hecho por el momento, todos son buenos actores y buenos cantantes, buena orquesta y buena escenografía....

Poor Elizabeth I. Donizetti really was beyond unfair to her. Still, this and Maria Stuarda are two of my favorite operas. Gruberova is an absolute powerhouse. Simply Marvelous!

Je n'aime pas particulièrement son timbre de voix ,mais il faut avouer qu'elle est extraordinaire dans ce rôle .Elle investit complètement le personnage de façon très crédible par son talent d'actrice et aussi et surtout par sa technique vocale prodigieuse de la coloratura dramatique .Donc bravo : meilleure interprète de ce rôle si difficile .

She is wonderfull to watch and listen to. I saw her in Covent Garden many years ago in Lucia, the tenor was Luis Lima,early 80/s I think. She brought the house down after the mad scene.

She is amazing, comparing singers is just crazy... Her voices is beautiful forget the flaws I think she has theee most beautiful voice I have ever heard, she makes violines sound terrible and she overpowers tgem with her magnificent voice.

Her voice is incredibly bright, although, of course, past its best. And even she doesn't display a serviceable low register for this part, it´s very impressinve piece of singing!

Edita's best recorded version of Roberto Devereux finale should be the one in 1990 in Spain, with the same staging as Weidinger. Somehow that video was deleted. In that performance, she gained incredible power in her voice and the last eb3 was sustained for NINE seconds!!! The audience got totally crazy after that!!!

Gruberova's voice is naturally past its prime at this point, but it offers a unique interpretation of the aged Elizabeth. Really my favorite interpretation of this aria.

Well, opera is singing + acting. Ideally they should be in balance and one shouldn't overshadow the other. But in this performance Gruberova has to put her acting in front cause she can't sing this anymore. This role very, very heavy. Vocally, no 50+ year old can do it justice. Nonetheless, her performance is exciting, dramatic and draws you in. She obviously likes the role, theaters and the audience seem ok with it. So more power to her :)
