- About this video -
Leonardo Dalessandri's "Watchtower of Turkey" is probably one of the most well-known videos among filmmakers. Leonardo created this stunning video in 2014 and it has since gained several million views.
So in today's video we're gonna analyse the techniques he used especially the transitions and sound effects, that made this video really stand out. If you haven't already, make sure to watch Leonardo's masterpiece here: • Watchtower of Turkey
The incredible voice over for the video was written and spoken in by Meryem Aboulouafa. You can follow her on soundcloud through the following link: www.soundcloud.com/meryemaboulouafa
The song that was used in the video is: Experience by Ludovico Einaudi
As mentioned, the two sources I use to get sound effects are:
freesound.org/ (free, but often need to give credit and sometimes very tedious to find something decent)
Epidemic Sound*: goo.gl/2z4vdf (paid, but way higher quality and you'll always find the right SFX here, also you get access to thousands of songs for your videos)
Also if you're searching for good music to edit your videos to, the place where I and many of the biggest creators on youtube get it from is here*: goo.gl/2z4vdf

So I have watched Watchtower of Turkey over a 100x maybe even more, and I know you analyze the video editing techniques but I don't know if you ever notice the next sequence relating to the next scene. For example, the moment the kid flaps his arms and the next shot goes to a bird shot and the color of the blue swing set to a blue cloth and so many more of them. it is truly a masterpiece of a video. Great analysis
@FlorianLand
@FlorianLand 5 жыл бұрын
it certainly is one masterpiece of a video. The 13 minute analysis of mine can certainly not even do it any justice! There would be sooo many more details we could look at that it would easily be worth making a 1.5 hour video on this right? Really glad you enjoyed my rough analysis anyway and very thankful for your support ❤️

Thanks for the review Florian, As a Turkish director who is living in istanbul, i want to add some info which i think it will be beneficial, 4:53 Its an old neighborhood called “balat” in old peninsula where you can always find colorful old fisherman’s houses and hanging clothes. Atatürk airport is nearby, so i can say the plane there is %100 percent real :) 7:10 The drone shot in cappadochia is not a drone shot its a baloon shot:) Its forbidden to fly drones there and maybe thats why there is timewarp used there because baloons fly so slow 11:50 The tipping point in the last section; the voice used there is Atatürk’s sound who is the founder of modern Turkish Republic and from a very famous Turkish Republic’s 10th year speech. The sentence there is also very touchy for Turks he says proud of being a Turk after summarising the war of liberty between Turks and Imperial forces that invaded Turkey. That supported video’s fame in Turkey. Thanks for the great work Leonardo, and thanks for the detailed review Florian Cheers

Ahhh Nice!

A ton of inspirational stuff as always ;) ;)btw.is there a list for a the effectnames into german titles? cuz everytime I look for an effect that I caught in a cool video the effect is mostly called out in english and cant find the german equivalent ^^
@FlorianLand
@FlorianLand 5 жыл бұрын
haha I bet there is one actually, but I don't have one myself. What I'd highly suggest though is to change the software to english language. I did that very early on for that exact reason because all the good tutorials are in english 😂😂😂

Totally agree with your point at 2:58 Flo! Content is so much more authentic when native people are in the videos NOT creators with designer clothes on !
@FlorianLand
@FlorianLand 5 жыл бұрын
100% agreed! The only thing with that is that you need to overcome the shyness in actually asking so many people if they would be okay in being on camera and then actually be put on youtube. that's actually what would scare me away from this a little 😂

there was an article about how he shot this video and which camera he where using. guess what.... a gh3 with 12-35mm and a 42.5mm 1.2 no slowmo 120fps... Here is the article: And oh everything was edited in final cut pro ! www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/articles/1582-watchtower-of-turkey-a-stunning-piece-of-cinematic-editing-and-sound-design-created-in-final-cut-pro-x-gets-nominated-best-of-vimeo-2014

Another amazing video Florian! One slight thing that I noticed you made a mistake on is when you said that he used a drone for one of the shots. I read one of his interviews about the video and he mentions that he only used a GH3 with 3 lenses and a gopro 3. I mean how good and portable were the drones 4/5 years ago? :-)
@FlorianLand
@FlorianLand 5 жыл бұрын
That can totally be right. Then he must have been in a balloon as well I guess? Mostly I'm just making assumptions, probably making lots of mistakes in my explanation. It's literally just my thoughts in that moment 😜

Thanks for giving professional hints and techniques on video making. As an older generation white haired dinosaur who started his amateur black and white photography profession in the early 1970's and a Turkish veteran professional tour guide, I only have 2 points to make which naturally escapes the the attention and comment of both the video maker and you as the editor. 1. Please rewatch 1.06-1.07. One of the boys is making the famous Turkish gesture of putting his thumb between his fingers saying FUCK! 2. The white haired gentleman with an impressive moustache is not a Turk. He is Mr. John Vincent Hurt, the British actor and his photograph is from his role in " Captain Corelli's Mandolin" as Dr. Iannis.

@@FlorianLand oh thanks after i comment i check the description and saw the title..thank you again..but can i ask u something..i wonder how they plan the editing of this kind..i mean..before they shoot do they already know what the music to be use, so they know the shot they will take or they just proceed with a plan and subject to shoot and then after pick a music they will use.. i still amaze how they edit out and how the vid clips follow the flow of the song.. so i was thinking.. which one comes first, the song or the shooting..and if u cando a video about this will be very much appreciated thank you
