KZfaq will have Neal Mohan as its new CEO, after long-time Chief Executive Susan Wojcicki stepped down on Thursday (February 16). It was in Wojcicki’s garage that Google, KZfaq’s parent company, first began. Neal Mohan, a Stanford graduate, joined Google in 2008 and is the chief product officer at KZfaq, involved with KZfaq Shorts and Music. He has also worked with Microsoft and sits on the board of Stitch Fix, a personal styling company, and the genomics and biotechnology company 23andMe. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, an independent US think tank. With Neal, this is the latest addition to the list of Indian origin CEOs being appointed at global companies. In this episode of the Editorial, our Managing Editor Mr Sujit Nair shares his take on the matter.

Agree to all of your 5 points but above all, the other country people do not think as we think. They always appreciate ability above natioanality and act in coordination with their boss irrespective of his country of origin . A highly civilized quality.

Legend has it that the trend is that most Indians have become CEO's after the company has reached cruising mode ie. valuation greater than 100 billion $. No Indian has been a CEO when a company was less than 1 million $. In air flights, cruising is done in autopilot mode.

Sorry Sujit. These are not "indian" CEOs. By citizenship, pretty much all are American. By education and profession, they were all nurtured outside India (after emigrating). Second, US is a meritocracy, and with so many people of Indian origin in the US, particularly in the tech sector, it's not a surprise to see good people rise to the top. Third, only in India is this obsession about anyone of Indian origin going to the top anywhere. In the actual companies or countries, they are not looked at as Indian or anything else, just as competent people who got the job. About your repeated points on IIT/IIMs, etc., I don't think they play a role in how people rise up in the professional environment. Most, if not all, have gone to US universities to get graduate degrees, but more importantly, it is their individual skills that has made them successful, not their degrees. So, I think this particular editorial was way off target, and quite irrelevant.

It's ok, you said ✌ Seeing sujit doing different subject otherthan politics n leaders is good sign maturity for him n his channel. The ceos and millions professional scattered around the globe should donate just 2 percentage salaries to people of poor india whose children's are not having proper schools n nourishment. Retired ceo who is in India can monitor this as individual social welfare organizations.

@@krisgopi_8 I have enormous respect for Sujit, one of the few voices that take up issues head on without fear. Just my opinion on this particular subject. We have this obsession to claim "indianness" of people who succeed in other societies that often only point to failure of India itself to provide a meritocracy.

The exchange of talent in a globalized world order is not a one way street. There are a large number of Westerners, Chinese and Japanese who have in recent times been invited to head Indian corporates, or in many cases act as independent directors on corporate boards, not necessarily as CEO's. Hence it is by a reciprocal stroke of logic that a number of Indians have hopped across to the West or even South-East Asia (Malaysia or Singapore) and made it big. Too much song and dance is made out of the liberalization that India carried out in 1991. The poverty and deprivation that we see in our country and concentration of wealth in a microscopic minority does not vindicate the beneficial aftermath of 1991.

One of the few times that I disagree with almost every point Sujit is arguing towards Indian's being chosen to lead Global Companies. I think its too simplistic to generalize. I'll try to break it down... 1) Sujit claims that the Indian consumer base can make or break global brands. Not true. If you look at the companies he has listed, their revenues in India are really small compared to the rest of the world. IBM, Google, Adobe, FedEx, Vimeo, Netapp etc. don't collect comparable revenues in India, like they do in the West. 2) Educational institutions that produce great minds. While that is partially true, the IIT's and IIM's are also feeders into the US universities where most of these Indian CEO's were educated. Almost everyone on his list has had advanced US educations before they joined the companies where they spend their entire careers before rising to the top (with a few exceptions) 3) Liberalization giving rise to aspiration... partially true but that again by itself does not account for it. While liberalization opened avenues for many Indians and broadened their horizons, many of the CEO's on this list were educated pre-liberalization and left the country prior to it. 4) Indian managers thinking on their feet - while its true that Indian's are more prone to thinking on their feet, that does not always translate to great leaders. Your investors would prefer calm, steady, strategic leaders who play the long game thru discipline, structure and in a methodical manner... and his list is a testament of people with that personality. 5) Adaptibility - this I agree with. The fact that we uproot ourselves and start all over in the US and assimilate is a testament to our adaptability. Again, not trying to ridicule Sujit but the overgeneralization of the Indian "type" needs to be examined. The fact is our education and emphasis on math and reading skills earlier in our careers gives us an advantage here in the US. Also, our stereotype of hard working, intelligent and loyal employees works in our favor.

Among these CEOs any one did Graduation in USA ? People who do graduation they depend on parents until they graduation and settle in carrier but in USA when kids come to graduation they are independent and they have to earn for their collage fee and living that leads to not concentrating on studies. That’s the main difference.

The advantage of a significant market has been wasted by Modi by not joining RECP in 2019. As today the largest trading market is RECP and not India. The fact is even Indian Manufactures are shifting their factories to RECP counties to avoid paying customs duties and get access to a market of 15 countries with a larger population and higher disposable income.

Agree wholeheartedly with views presented here on this issue. A word of caution though! While pursuing personal economic enhancement goals to satisfaction abroad, Indians should not ignore their social responsibilities towards the weaker sections of society in distant lands in any manner they possibly can. The moment we’ll meaning countrymen get perceived as “colonial “ & exploitative, their fate could suddenly take a turn for the worse, as happened in Uganda, South Africa, Fiji & Malaysia earlier.
