most popular 2010+ edm is based on avicii, however a large amount of edm styles are not derivated from avicii skrillex's dubstep was based on brostep (existed before avicii), inspired a new generation of "indie" edm, like pretty much all the styles on ncs, including alan walker, and so a good part of the 2015+ edm which was based on his sounds, ...

It's hilarious that most people think EDM started sometime in the 1990's just because Electric Dance Music was shortened with EDM or started being called EDM. There is NO "EDM" without the 1970's Disco, 1980's House, ED Pop/Mixes, Freestyle, Hiphop House and Techno, and the 1990's Techno House, ALL OF IT WAS AND IS Electric Dance Music or, EDM.
