The funky surfaces of aspheric lenses correct for the spherical aberration that makes conventional lenses not focus all light to the same point #optics #stem #lenses #science #physics #engineering #shorts

The laser demo is made to use those 2D lenses like the first lens. Using the second lens, you couldn't see the lines go through and show up on the table below just because it is intended for real systems and not these educational demos

Ahh sorry, we thought that your last comment was actually on the video before this one, so we were referring to this video. We'll look into if we can make a good, practical demo showing an asphere correcting spherical aberration!

Thank you for teaching me about lenses. So in the second lense you showed, when it comes to how it affects the light traveling through helps me understand as well. Would that remove some of the fish eye effect or perhaps lead to further skewing of the image but around the middle rather than the outside?
@edmundoptics
@edmundoptics Ай бұрын
You're welcome! Aspheric lenses can also remove distortion in addition to spherical aberration, resulting in less of a fish-eye effect

A lens which projects images as non-rectilinear cannot be corrected by a lens like this. Modern lenses use many pieces of lenses which are aspherical which help with focus. Some of the worlds best images use apochromatic lenses which further increase image quality than a single aspherical lens would

What would happen if you had a setup like this and then put a sort "opposite" lens to the first one on the focal point? Would you get all the light beams overlapping?
@edmundoptics
@edmundoptics Ай бұрын
Yes, that is done in real lenses! Combinations of lenses are carefully chosen to balance out each other's aberrations. That's why nice camera lenses have many glass lenses inside a metal barrel instead of 1 simple glass lens

@@edmundoptics Yep, a lens can be corrected for one wavelenghth, however if you need it to be corrected for spherical abberations, flat field and chromatic abberations over a wide range say 400-700nm, you quickly get systems with multiple doublets or even triplets, all matched for each other in material and shape. Especially common for as said camera objectives but also plan apochromatic microscope objectives, there are some nice graphics out there if you look it up.

Yeah they may include aspheric lenses or other more complicated optical designs that do a better job at correcting for aberrations!

The asphere in this video is made for real applications unlike the 2D lenses used for these educational demos. With the asphere in front of the beams, you couldn't see them show up on the table below so you wouldn't really see anything
