In this documentary, I interview a number of Tourists and Expats in the Sosua Cabarete area of the Dominican Republic in regards to what scams they wish to warn others about.
To be a victim of a scam completely sours the visitor's view about his/her vacation in DR or expat life, in an otherwise beautiful country with the culture and many good people. With modern communication, the bad experiences get spread quickly around the planet, something every country should take seriously if they wish to grow a healthy economy.
So by ensuring that all scammers are out-smartened by the visitors, then the money will hopefully stay or go to where it should.
In this video, you'll learn tips about avoiding becoming a scam victim to Dom Rep Immigration, police, beach hustlers, beggars, companions, tour guides to realtors, constructors, lawyers, hospitals, accidents, credit cards, taxi transportation and more...
Have a smart, safe, and fun vacation! Brgds Mr.T

My parents grew up Dominican Republic, came to the States, and made a good life. Eventually they went back and retired in the Dominican Republic. The Hell and scams they went through are too hurtful to remember or to mention. Twice they literally had their home emptied out everything was taken even the toilet paper the house was empty. Like no one ever moved in, every single thread of anything was taken. Keep in mind that happened twice in 15 years. One day my father went back to the States for vacation that very same night they came in, tied my mother up, put up hoodie on her, and stole everything from the house. Another scam was hiring some construction workers my father paid them he got receipts and everything was fine a month later they took it to court saying they never got the tens of thousands dollars that he paid them. After they built a nice luxurious outdoor area with a roof and bathroom some cops decided that it was now theirs and everyday they came they slept and played Domino's in the outdoor area. The latest, is the chemotherapy doctor that was robbing her blind, that wasn't even giving her the real chemotherapy. Also the fake doctors claiming they can cure her. I keep sending her many thousands of dollars and it goes straight to witch doctors and quacks claiming they can cure her cancer with roots. If it wasn't scammers it was their own friends and relatives constantly harassing for money they literally stole my heritance. After my mother passes away ,she has terminal cancer, I swear I will never step foot on the country or speak one word to any of my family members who stole from her as well. For me, my Dominican heritage is an embarrassment and to all my relatives in the DR, all my family and I were ATM (cash machines). I rememeber seeing a close cousin of mine that I grew up with. I mean as youth we were so close. Two peas in a pod. I saw him and I was so emotional, I recalled all the fond memories full of childhood memories. He invited me over to meet his family and have dinner. I was overjoyed. After dinner the scam for money began and he immediately started begging for thousands of dollars each time I said no he got more and more aggressive. I went to the bathroom and cried. This person who I had such fond memories growing up and couldn't wait to see treated me like a cash machine. I didnt give him a cent!!! AFTER MY MOTHERS FUNERAL I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THAT DAMN COUNTRY OR EVER TALK TO MY FAMILY WHO TREATED MY FATHER, MOTHER, AND I LIKE NOTHING BUT CASH MACHINES. ROT IN HELL D.R.

I went to DR - Puerto Plata for the second time. First time I did not have any issues. My second trip my taxi driver was involved in an accident, he could not afford to pay the damages and threatened me to pay. In addition he stole all my personal belongings. I went to the Canadian Embassy and the individual working didn’t even speak English! Went to the court house to file a complaint, the judge refused that I should be refunded when I wasn’t driving and already paid the driver when I did not even arrive to my destination. Corrupt system, I definitely will not be returning.

Having endured several videos on this country and the negative comments made by visitors and locals the first thought that comes to mind is why would anyone want to plan a holiday to a country that has all of these issues that you would need to be aware of each day or even worse each minute or hour of each day while in this place. My idea of a holiday away from the place that I call home does not for one minute include this country. Thanks for all the advice given by the people interwiewed it has made it very easy to cross this place off the list of places to visit in the world. After watching these videos my homeland is confirmed as a paradise that I will continue to explore in safety.

Never bring anything to the DR, that you really want to keep. I took a cheap watch, cheap shoes, cheap sunglasses, cheap telephone and cheap everything. So when it was stolen, I did not care. I spent thirteen winters there and was driven out by the violence. The Dominican Republic became Spanish Harlem with Palm Trees.

DR is a predator/prey culture. Did you know it's common for the folks in DR to say they have a "pension", cause they have a relative in DR. Every dominican wants to go to the US and send money back their family. First couple of years the family in DR say "thank you so much for the money", then it turns to "where's my money", then it turns to "where is the money you owe me". Seriously, I was once sending money to a relative and one month skipped the monthly gift, because of some car repairs, the next month they call me and tell me that I owe them twice the amount...😂. I told them keep track of how much I owe them and hanged up the phone and never cent another penny.
@GalaxieMarauder
@GalaxieMarauder 3 жыл бұрын
@@JT-xf9sw yea joe that does happen just like you said. Exactly! Or they think the family here has it easy by sending money not knowing of the sacrifices and will waste it. My wife then sent money for her mom to buy medicine. Her cousin took the money and spent it on herself wasting it thinking money was easy to get in the US so it would be nothing to send another remesa. So with that she never sent another dollar that way. She sent the money to the pharmacy and had them deliver the medication to the house.

So true how they think you've got unlimited money! I had someone on the beach in DR harassing me to give him money saying 'how will I pay for university if you don't give me money?!' I had to take out large loans to go to university which I will be paying off for a long time, I'm not rich!!

Hi Clara, thanks for watching! One thing we learn over the years here on the North Coast, is that a large percentage of the locals have turned into natural hustlers, so once they see you as a new-bee Gringo in their town, then they are fast to use a variety of methods to get something from you, whether money, food, drinks or stuff. This mentality I believe is also called "Penny smart, Pound stupid!" - but when you live here, they eventually leave you alone (as you've now turned them down enough times, and they recognize you're an expat). Happy travels! Brgds Mr.T

interesting, then it must be corrupt at every level just like here, as then no-one around the scammer seem to care if they ripped off a foreigner, as the observers or amigo's they brag too, are often scammers as well. The Dominicans that are into scamming folks, often praise each-other for doing a scam on a tourist with a "high five" and say "tu tigre" like it's something to be proud of - Sick mentality!

Dear viewers. Every country has its nice sides and bad sides to it, and in regards to Dominican Republic, in my previous Documentaries I pointed out hundreds of the "nice sides" and I received many "thank you's" from Dominicans for this, (and I'll be making more videos to push the positive sides don't worry!) However we also need to be "realists" and realize that in order to keep tourists and expats safe, happy, respected, appreciated and committed, we need to warn visitors of the countless of pitfalls existing down here, in a society where there is very little justice for foreigners, tons of scams, no equal rights, and among many Dominicans also underlying jealousies and racism. As I said in the video, "To be forewarned is to be forearmed!", and this Documentary is CERTAINLY NOT MADE TO SCARE PEOPLE AWAY, but instead to better arm them for what nasty scams could potentially be done to them. If we can make sure the good people can out-smarten the scammers and robbers, then they will no doubt have a great time here enjoying the honest and devoted Dominicans and their beautiful Island. I appreciate you all watching! To view a documentary about the happy "street smart" DR tourists / viewers, then check this Documentary out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qKykmKipx6qod40.html Saludos! We almost went to the DR for a wedding last year. After watching the video, I doubt we will ever go now. I've been to over two dozen countries in my travels and have seen a lot of scammers, but this video paints the DR as a real hell hole. I thought Mexico had scammers in their tourist spots. Everyplace has hustlers and scams. If I had to recommend a place for a Caribbean vacation, it would be Puerto Rico. I've been their several times and the people for the most part are really nice. I've made some lifelong friend there who welcome me as family every time I come back. It helps if you speak a little Spanish!

I've been very fortunate to travel quit a bit, some of those countries have been very poor (Turkey, Philippines, Jamaica, Mexico, Venezuela) They all have their level of scams hustles and things to avoid. However by far it's the worst in DR. From the point of arrival at the airport to the departure, someone is trying to figure out a way to get money out of your wallet. I can appreciate poverty but the lack of conscious or remorse is unsettling.

I've been to the DR seven times over the last 8 or 9 years and in my experience, you just have to be a smart traveler, just like any where else in the world you go. I never exchange currency, I pay for everything in US dollars and its never a problem. I also make sure I check before hand what the going rate of exchange is before I visit. In all my travels I have felt nothing but welcoming people, who are gracious and hospitable. Now I don't go wondering about on my own, that's only being a smart traveler. I have also made some really good friends in my visits there that I see on my return visits. And don't be afraid to barter prices on everything from cigars to trinkets. If there are scams then you need to educate yourself and just don't be stupid. That's good advice for any traveler. Do your research, take the time to know what you'll run into. My best advice, stay at one of the big reputable resorts and you'll be just fine. It's a fantastic country and don't be afraid to go for a visit. Just be aware that you are a tourist and act accordingly.

@@benajminpadilla6360 I also agree. Mr. Yasaitis is completely wrong. In addition, I would urge people to avoid this country. I have just returned from a stay in Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. They are completely opposite in character. I had very few problems in Punta Cana but at Las Americas I was scammed by the police for DOR 1600! I actually was thinking of relocating here but when the Punta Cana site manager told me DR in his view is the #1 fraud capital. He related several instances of real estate fraud he knew personally as it relates to getting clear title in real estate transactions! If you cannot trust a licensed attorney nor the judiciary, then I throw in the towel.

Mark Yasaitis. I myself being a Dominican who have traved to many countries I consider your advice to be truely educated. That goes true to any place where you visit. In any country even the so called developed countries you got to be careful where you go and the time to walk by. This video is so sad and hope we in the Dominican Republic may improve our tourism business. So thank you for your educated advice. I also hope next time Mr T.visit the DR things may be different. Yes they are in general very friendly and helpful, and usually against money, however down here we get many short term visitors who keep their "Rosy Colored Glasses" on until they fall in on or more of the many traps that definitely exist here. Unless you've tried to settle here, gone through the residency BS here, worked or run a business here, constructed or purchased property here, then you really don't have the experience to coach others on what it's really like from A to Z, sorry if that seems heavy to hear, but it's better to get the true balanced picture, than finding out the hard way (part of why I produce these documentaries) - anyway, thanks for watching! In 2017 my buddy wasn't feeling well. He went to the hospital in sosua. Before he was seen he had to give his passport. After being seen by the Dr. he was told that he had Parkinson's disease. 😂 He had to pay them $600 before they released his passport back to him. He was just dehydrated.

This is a great video and it covers a lot of ground it should be a prerequisite for anyone visiting the D.R. I think 50 is a conservative number also I'm sure as time goes by the list will grow. I grew up in the Bronx and feel safer there at least the police would make a half assed attempt to help you, in the DR they would be looking for a piece of the action.

Hi Mike, thanks again for watching and your great comments. You're right there are plenty more scams here, and I could easily make two more sequels with 50+ scams in each one. My next Documentary is very connected to this topic, yet this time it focuses on how even a high percentage of everyone from the general public right through to the Government will victimize the Gringo even further when things go wrong, in other words, locals who hadn't actually planned a scam, are quick to join one when they notice or face a Gringo with a troublesome situation - please stay tuned! I like the Dominican Republic but I think there are a few things that need to be fixed : 1) the Currency Exchange at the international airports where literally 1/4 of the dollar goes to the currency exchange office at the airport 2) the Taxi transportation service at the airport going downtown where the total price is fixed and not negotiable 3) the local Hotel you booked on Expedia which happens to be in fact a regular below-average apt building with no day hours security and no porter to help take your bags into your suite which turns out to be a plain furnished studio 4) the average Restaurant or coffee=sandwich place where NO price is listed on the menu. All these issues could be fixed quickly by organizing Business Associations registered with the local government and maintaining some minimal standards of operation .

I visited the DR once and will never go back. Stayed at the Club Med in Punta Cana. Took a puddle jumper from Puerto Rico and as soon as we got off the plane at the Club Med property I and another visitor were selected randomly by the police, taken to the men's restroom, had our luggage rifled through and then we were strip searched. Took a bus trip to an outdoor ampitheater and on the tour every mile or so you would see armed soldiers with assault rifles which was very disconcerting. Needless to say the experience ruined my stay at the club. Never again.

I'm not too familiar with Santiago's suburbs or Santo Domingo, but supposedly there are areas that one should not enter, especially not by foot. However as to the North Coast and even Punta Cana/Bavaro areas, as long as you stay in the public eye, you'll be safer than a cow in India (as long as you are being respectful towards others). OK you will be approached by hustlers and sales people, but this is just a matter of politely saying NO and moving on. Hope that answered your question. Brgds Mr.T

I asked for my neighbors numbers in case of an emergency and I had the same taxi guy for the whole trip, I tipped him well because I felt safer with him. 90% of the people are very lovely, the worst people you will meet are near the tourist areas and the hoods. I managed to make a lot of friends, but I also walked away with my things as well. I can't stress this enough..Lock up and safeguard your valuables at ALL times. Ask yourself if you really need to bring expensive watches, jewelry and other items. If you drink, pace yourself and keep an eye on your drinks. It's easy to have a good time and let your guard down. The risk is greater than the thrill and convenience. If you need to get around take a taxi. I rode in a car and we were almost hit 4 times. Red lights and stop signs are optional there. I believe things are improving around especially Sosua, as many including myself have been challenging the scammers and they seem to be either leaving town or shutting down their businesses, Yet much more work on this is needed and a real good clean-out of the corrupt Government hierarchy here, and then things could start to prosper for the benefit of everyone. First thing when I start living in the Philippines was learning the language, even the majority speaks English. A great help and the moment people know, you understand them and also can reply, they're getting more careful. Also here the people are very nice to you, but......you have the "" wrong color "" and that means $$$. Especially in a country which is rather pore. @@EducatedTraveler well this guy I met online last year and we have had a real chance at a good relationship. We have communicated daily face time and all that. We really did fall in love, but when he would go thru those phases when his business doesn't go well, he will ask for my help. I have sent him a little money a couple times, but it's just my personal policy not to give ppl money like this. I'm a business owner myself, and I've had to learn different ways to improve things with my money on my own, I don't go around asking ppl for money. I love him, and I understand hard times of slow days and when customers or clients no show, but I also know you must find other ways to supplement if self employment is what you choose to do. I just have no sympathy for this, and absolutely can stand begging or attempts at manipulation of my feelings. We broke up last year because I told him I needed more time before I could visit, since my oldest daughter was against it, and my younger kids had a big school trip to Disney I was also going on. He got mad about being put off. It took him months to cool off. In the meantime we both saw others. I won't be manipulated, used, bullied or pushed into anything I don't want to do, like taking a trip before I'm ready, or being made to feel like I should allow him to borrow money. I'm not moved by this stuff. His financial issues are his problem. If he wants me to connect him with someone to get him a work Visa to come to the States to work on his stuff, I can do that, but I'm not supporting him where he is. I don't give men money like that. That is of no benefit to me.

Hi! I assume it's Miss Harris? Books can be written on the similar stories we keep hearing from folks down here. The main thing us foreigners take a long time to finally admit about most of the Dominicans in tourist areas are here is, that to them "YOU ARE THE OPPORTUNITY!!!" You've heard the analogy of the "goose that lays the golden eggs" - Well to them "WE ARE THE GOOSE!" And the day we ADMIT that despite their good looks and amazing charm, if all they truly want to do, is to "slice pieces out of the goose" rather than help you bring in more of the golden eggs, then all we've really found is a another SMOOTH HUSTLER!! To take a hard-core example, among the prostitution in the streets and bars, you see the "pretentious love" fly out the window in a micro second, where i.e. a good looking charming lady has emotionally massaged a man for 5 minutes to 2 hours even caressing him, kissing him and even telling him she loves him, after which she asks him how much you pay me? or she spins him a sob story (lie) about her dire financial situation. When the man doesn't offer her enough or he says I'm not looking for a relationship based on paying out money all the time, then often these girls will dump him in a heart beat, only found to be trying to pull the same stunt off in another bar one hour later with some other lonely dude. Again "WE ARE THE OPPORTUNITY" - to them the game is HUSTLING US for a much as possible, whether that be money, stuff, trips, paying for their studies etc... I suggest you watch my video on finding love in the DR, as the guests whom I interviewed explains it based on painful experiences: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qaeDp8Vzks6oZY0.html Feel free to comment, Brgds Mr.T

Good for all of you who don't want to come. Stay away, we don't need you. There's too many people in the island already, we are the largest populated island in the entire Caribbean. The least we need is put-downers like you three.

After hearing about all the scams, and if your hurt, no help until money is paid up front, Who in their right mind would want to go anywhere near this place, I know I won't. Especially knowing that the cops are even on the take?? So who do you turn to if you get robbed?, the Police, lol who'll rob you again, no thanks. This just changed my mind for good.

We got robbed by a couple of youths. For some reason they returned the two laptops in the early hours next morning. They were doing a special clamp down on crime so they sent a top cop to take care of us. He caught the perps straight away and told me to say I wanted them sent to POP jail. The parents and some locals begged me not to say yes as they were teenagers. I had to say yes as the cop was someone you don't reason with. We had to get an uncle who had a car to drive us to the jail. We sat next to the robbers. They were thrown into a cell with a lot of nasty looking people. A couple of Haitians turned up wailing and crying. A family turned up and passed a take out through a hole in the wall. I had to buy the cop his lunch across the road. At the end of the day we went to see the Fiscal. He asked us how much money was stolen. He told the uncle that the kids would be released if he signed a promise to pay? Everybody was released and on the way home the cop pulled out my wife's wedding rings and asked my wife if they were hers. We actually got everything back.

I was considering a trip to the DR. After this video and more research on other websites I will not visit the DR. I enjoy blending in with local population but with all the common sense warnings given I wouldn’t enjoy myself and would always be in the defensive concerned about my safety. I don’t have time to filter how who is dishonest and who is good. I’m there to enjoy their culture and the country. I’ll just go back to Panama 🇵🇦 to enjoy myself and not have to bother with unethical people as pointed out in the DR

I enjoy your videos and have been watching them all in preparation for our trip next year. We've been to DR twice, Jamaica once and Mexico twice. This trip we plan on spending our 2nd week away from the resort and touring the island. I have priced a rental car with insurance, including the very necessary "cas de conductore" coverage, and guestimate $1000 or more for the week. My second plan was to hire a guide to drive us around for the week, pay for his gas, food and accommodations and a daily per diem. Does this sound feasible? To me it seems like the better option of the 2 as we would have a local that can provide insight and access to the Country that we may not otherwise get. I sure would appreciate your advice on this. Thanks in advance.

I'm Dominican, from New York, I play them, they don't play me. Be tough always. I'm tough as shit. Nobody plays me, NOBODY, Unfortunatley, gringos get played all the time. It's sad that we treat people like this. All poor countries do this. I plan on retiring there when I get older. Live a great life there and pay no property taxes. NO PROPERTY TAXES!!!!!!!!!
