www.ted.com Accepting his 2005 TED Prize, photographer Edward Burtynsky makes a wish: that his images -- stunning landscapes that document humanity's impact on the world -- help persuade millions to join a global conversation on sustainability. Burtynsky presents a riveting slideshow of his photographs, which show vividly how industrial development is altering the Earth's natural landscape. From mountains of tires to rivers of bright orange waste from a nickel mine, his images are simultaneously beautiful and horrifying.

Even in 240p, you can tell the photographs are powerful. Wish it was better quality though.

"Globalization requires, a nation to be rich, the working-class majority of its citizens must be poor, increase in number, and live in a deteriorating environment" ~ Herman Daly, a co-nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize for sustainable development due to his revelation that the current economic system is leading to ecological collapse

"I'm not making an indictment here..." He should be. What they are doing is awful. And yet, he thanks the corporations for being so generous in allowing their activities to be photographed. wtf?

He does not blame them because they are being pressed against their natural intentions into compliance with the push of much, much more wealthier demands. Do you think these peoples would want to destroy this landmark they have printed proudly even on their currency? Do you think they would want to go against all of their cultural norms and harass elderly from their homes? No, it goes against everything they believe in dearly, but they still are forced into these complex questions of the 'Greater Good' and omnipresent questions of self preservation, (termed often as ''greed', a very unhelpful, un-nuanced term). TLDR: They all feel they have to do this to help their people. It's sad and awful to think about, but sometimes, we must push ourselves to think of the lives of others.

+Byron Gatwood I like his impartiality. He only aims to start a conversation. His work conveys our dilemma, for sustainability but also need for the good life (cars phones oil etc). If he were to start putting these corporations down, he would lose that very important impartial standing point. He would just be another person arguing their opinion, in this way, he encourages people to have their own opinion. It's worked with you clearly!

Careful with the word "literally"! Shanghai is a forest of skyscrapers, metaphorically.

A very interesting semantic shift happened to the word "literally", to the extent that it no longer really means "in a literal sense". I'm pretty it's been used in this way for a couple hundred years. It's another example of how disorganized language (humans) can be.
