Mystery. Loneliness. Isolation… are the words that can describe Edward Hopper’s paintings. Considered among the masters of presenting urban isolation, Hopper is widely acknowledged as the most important realist painter of twentieth-century America. In this video, we’ll explore why this enigmatic artist retains his power and why his paintings resonate a lot with viewers today.

My hubby lives large while I tend to see things less "positive". To him, this painting had always represented sophisticated adults squeezing the the final hours of a fun night in the big city. To me, I felt the three customers were each avoiding returning to their separate lonely existence. Interesting how our interpretations reflect our personalities.

Hopper's paintings give us much to contemplate. Paintings such as Nighthawks and House by the Railroad bring me thoughts about the real America, not an idealized unreal dream.

Ever since my first encounter with his works, I've frequently come back to them 😍. Yeah, they truly evoke moments of reflection on what it means to experience solitude in the modern era, beyond geographical boundaries. Thanks !

What I find most interesting about this painting is that people seem to say that the painted figures look "lonely" or "sad". To me they look relaxed, and I just find the painting to be relaxing and enjoyable. Hard to put into words. I also think that the area looks clean and well designed, as opposed to say a dingy soulless city.

When I lived in Brooklyn, I had dreams like this. Only I was the only person on neon lit streets. Not scary, but I'd wake up very unsettled.

Wartime alienation. But what if you're high, a book of Hopper's paintings is lying nearby for some reason, you look at it. It's you and the paintings. You know nothing of "wartime alienation." You know nothing about Hopper. The paintings are just fantastic. You love everything by Hopper after that.

I guess if you are ingesting comics instead of pure art, the toon look helps- I'll enjoy Hopper undiluted.

So Ill be honest, this is missing a couple of things. First of all, his inspiration through (mostly german) cinema, him being influenced by the scenes he saw from the EL-Train he took to work, and his failed marriage being represented by the non-verbal couple, and a whole lot more. Really couldve used a lot more research.

I find the AI voice rather irritating (if it isn't AI...time for some new narration)

I know that I agree that it’s AI. But I do agree that the script and narration sound a bit amateurish, maybe trying too hard. I think this is a tough YT segment to break into as I must have seen 3-4 other videos on Hopper that were simply more professionally produced…

I love Hopper’s work, but I think Edward Hopper, though he was married, was a total introvert. He seemed to work on a painting only until he believed he got his point across. I see Hopper as a solitary man, mostly friendless; this is only my opinion, of course.

Sorry. This is a mess. First, Hopper’s work is not improved by or in need of your animation. Second, he was clearly influenced mostly by German Impressionist Cinema (think Film Noir), not American Realism
