Alot of historians believe that Henry VIII looked alot more like his grandfather, Edward IV, than his father, Henry VII. Henry had almost the same height in his prime, he was a womanizer just like Edward, and was the next monarch to marry for love (Anne Boleyn) He even looked more like his mother's side of the family with his light hair and well built figure Henry VII was more lanky and shrewd lookin, often made fun of as looking like a banker rather than a king

***** They loved each other at first, but then Henry got tired of her and she was executed. Edward and Elizabeth had a relationship based on lust rather than actual true love. Just shortly after they met, they got married. Well Henry and Anne were together longer before their marriage, to actually fall in love.

I loved hollow crown but they really could have picked different actors for some of the characters. I think because Edward IV isn't necessarily the hero of Henry vi they didn't make him an attractive young guy, and it might have been weird if the lady grey was portrayed by a young girl when she was infact older than Edward in real life.

This entire series is acted excellently. I don't so much mind the actresses age because in Richard III the play always make mention of Elizabeth being "long in years" so the actress fits our modern notions of that. The actor who plays Edward does a very good job but it would have pronounced things better if he had been very tall and handsome. This opposed with Richard's deformity makes the character jealous and cruel.

i seriously don't get why people are complaining...this scene was performed fantastically! so, maybe Edward isn't as young and lusty and tall as he should be, and Elizabeth is aged up, but who honestly gives a shit? they have a beautiful hold on the language and the love Edward feels is really believable! as someone who is a huge fan of this scene, i think it's amazing how they tackled it. if your problem with this is that Elizabeth is too old or """ugly""" then honestly fuck. off. if sophie okonedo can play Margaret, why can't an older woman play Elizabeth?

There is no historical evidence which supports this version, much less the aged actors. Elizabeth Woodville went on to give this king a boatload of children ! The actress is clearly past menopause. He was attracted to her for her beauty (in fact, she was called "the most beautiful woman in the kingdom"), and enslaved to her by her intelligence and wit.

If English is in fact your first language, you should only need to hear the dialogue twice to really understand the structure of the sentences. The context in the description is the key to the cipher in most cases with any Shakespearean segment of language
@beccablueeyes99
@beccablueeyes99 6 жыл бұрын
tacos mexicanstyle Gehenna you have cliff notes, like in the description, it does make it easier to understand the flow of the scene, however, if you watch The Hollow Crown in it's entirety, you will not have guidance and be reliant on your own ability to understand. If that foundation is not their, then it is quite difficult. Shakespeare and old English are not commonly studied in school anymore and his plays have many modern interpretations, as such, the colourful and complicated prose are not appreciated nor understood by the younger generation. So, it is difficult for a few people. It does not make them stupid, it just means they do not have the tools necessary to understand the words.
@tacosmexicanstyle7846
@tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 жыл бұрын
This isn't even old English, Shakespeare took middle English (which is completely understandable for anyone who's ever picked up a KJV Bible) and turned it into his own dialect. You only need to be familiar with the usage and link the cryptic passages of words back to the context in the description. No, it doesn't make someone stupid if they can't do this, just not very analytical or widely read and perhaps out of practice--it is necessary to practice even your first language and actively seek to improve habits in order to maintain solid reading comprehension, as it is necessary to read a broad range of literature to understand allusions and idiomatic expressions like we see in Shakespeare.
@CrankyGrandma
@CrankyGrandma 6 жыл бұрын
tacos mexicanstyle Shakespeare is modern English, not old or middle. It can take some getting used to but it’s not that different . There is a book series called “no fear Shakespeare” which has one side original and one in a 21st century style of modern English. It can be helpful as you are learning to get the hang of it.
@tacosmexicanstyle7846
@tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it might technically be called "modern English" as Shakespeare wrote after the Great Vowel Shift, but it's still a stark contrast to what we speak now. He did write during the transition from middle to modern, but remember we still had to go through the 17th and 18th century vowel changes and the obsession with making English more romantic that came about in the 19th century. All of that separates our modern language to that of early "modern" English

That's a legend. We don't know if they actually met under a tree. They most likely met at her home. She probably wouldn't be a beauty by 21st century standards and her and Edwards "love story" wasn't that perfect anyways.
@izzieandavadanuggets9325
@izzieandavadanuggets9325 7 жыл бұрын
While the beauty standards for Medieval England may be very different than today I still think she must have been stunning for Edward to do so much for her. She caused a lot of problems for him and he appears to never stand up to her and her brash behavior towards his extremely loyal friends and family. Princess Bona may have been ugly or not a suitable wife but I just think Elizabeth Woodville must have been beautiful and there was a strong attraction. She was the cause of such discord in her husband's family. She also had many proposals as a younger woman. She was asking Edward IV to help get her late husband's lands back for her son. Such disagreements happened from time to time but it usually happened when a widow of a lord should inherit her late husband's land because he died without any issue or at least a son to inherit. The late husband's family would feel she should not keep any type of inheritance and it should revert back to the next male just as a title would. The strange thing is that Elizabeth Woodville had a son with Sir John Grey of Groby. So why was her mother-in-law fighting with her. Why would she be unwilling to give her own grandson his inheritance. There must have been something going on there. Her first mother in law seems to have not been able to get along with her as well.

@cg8397
@cg8397 2 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Woodville's "price" was marriage, King Edward IV didn't have to agree with it and could have moved on to other women. Edward had plenty of mistresses before he married Elizabeth and even during their marriage. This would cause their children to be deposed from the succession by Parliament when Richard III claimed the throne, following Richard Stillington's testimony that Edward had already secretly married a widowed mistress (Eleanor Butler) before marrying Elizabeth and so the Edward-Elizabeth marriage was legally invalid.

She had silver-gilt hair, very long and there's a stained glass of her...she was really elegant and graceful..she had that ineffable grace thing. This woman is just not her. I am always delighted to see more realistic looking women but this woman is too old and too worn-lookiing. Elizabeth captivated Edward by her stunning hair and beauty and by being a damsel in distress and by saying...like Anne Boleyn..."NO".

The stereotype that everyone in the past was hideous is really annoying. There's no reason why she wouldn't be a beauty. It's possible for people to have clear skin and good quality hair. Bathing doesn't become as big of an issue once you stop doing it regularly for a while (this is not to get people to stop bathing, though, just saying that when no one ever bathes it isn't actually as disgusting as it may sound). And people (especially) nobles did try to take care of their teeth: they flossed regularly and many chewed mint to keep their breath fresh. Sure, she wouldn't be on the cover of a magazine today, but there's no reason why there can't be a few people graced with a natural beauty and vitality.

Everyone's complaining about Margaret of Anjou being portrayed by a black actress and nobody bats an eye when a (and I'm sorry for being rude) very plain looking redhead plays Elizabeth Woodville. Elizabeth Woodville was no more a plain looking woman than Anjou was a black woman. Terrible casting all the way around.

Well.. that.. that’s not King Edward IV. Furthermore. That’s not Elizabeth Woodville.

Shakespeare history of this medieval era was shit not accurate but based on folk lore but Philippa Gregory is more accurate

I think Edward may have had a precontract with Eleanor Butler, which didn't make Elizabeth the true queen because the rules of marriage were different then.

I think that was Richard III's argument as to why Edward V was illegitimate and why he (Richard) should be King

No, there were already rumors about a precontract years before.

Wendy Hull. Richard never got it proved either way. Parliament just rubber stamped the degree. I don't see Edward being stupid enough not to get any entanglements annulled.

That's a shit argument that Richard III made up. Engagements were not marriages and were commonly called off. A royal could be engaged to multiple people before they are finally married off. Richard's arguement would make him illegitimate as his ancestors broke off engagements and promises to marry plenty of times. If he had actually wed Eleanor Butler, then yes his marriage would be invalid as it was bigimous, but that didn't happen. Rome also never stated the marriage was invalid, mainly just Richard III.

It's an amalgamation of several of Shakespeare's plays. He wrote 3 plays covering the reign of Henry VI.

The Shakespearian speaking is completely inaccurate. Shakespeare made it up and he wasn't even born when this show takes place.

This isn't a historical drama. It's a performance of Shakespeare's play. The Shakespearian speaking is accurate. They work VERY hard to have the actors get this right. Dame Judi mentions it in the DVD special features

Great banter, but looks-wise I dont' see where Elizabeth Woodville would appear with red hair, etc. Bad choice of actors imo.
