Denali National Park is like NOTHING ELSE WE HAVE EVER SEEN! Today we are taking a wilderness tour with an experienced guide... and then we are FLYING up to the mountain!!
This is all part of a Cruise Tour with Holland America Line.
Some fun facts about Denali:
**Denali is the highest peak in North America.
**30% club ‘she makes her own weather and covers things up’. Our guide pointed out several places we would have been able to see the mountain if it was a clear day.
**Gaining 7 minutes of daylight a day until summer solstice on June 21st, the longest day of the year.
**This area is arctic desert. It gets very little rain here. Lots of snow but the snow is dry. It won’t pack into a snowball.
**The National Park is the size of NH!!
**Road top elevation is about 3900 ft. We travel about 40 miles into the park and then have to turn around as a rock slide took out the road. (Pretty Rocks landslide)
**2 miles between the North & South peaks of Denali. Meldrow Glacier is currently surging. This only happens about every 60 years.
We saw lots of caribou (reindeer are the same animals just domesticated), arctic ground squirrels aka Denali hot dogs, Willow ptarmigans (Alaska state bird) and even a porcupine. We saw fresh bear tracks in the snow but no bears.
The next day we leave Denali National Park and the McKinley Chalet Resort and travel by bus to Fairbanks, Alaska. Here we explore the downtown area and then visit one of the old dredges and get to pan for gold!

For me, once on that bus was enough. The one we were on broke down, and we had to wait up on the mountain a couple of hours for another. I was a little scared going up and down the mountian, thought for sure we would go off the side. At any rate had a good day and quite memorable.

Now that I listen to more of your video, I take it you guys did not go up the mountian in the school bus. it was a wild ride.

When we stay in Denali at the Princess Lodge in September, we will be doing an airplane ride to a glacier on Denali and landing and exploring!! Super excited. As for busses in Denial National Park, school busses are allowed, but big Coach style busses are not.

Looks like a great tour. When we were hiking in Denali National Park we spotted a Lynx about 5 feet off the trail in brush clump. We found out later from a park ranger that seeing a lynx in Denali is quite rare. We were also lucky enough to get to see Denali, which was really neat. We also got to see the sled dogs that the Park actively uses in their work. They are quite a bit larger than the sled dogs that race in the Iditarod, which we saw in Fairbanks.

That brought back memories 😁 Took essentially the same flight 10 years ago when my wife and I took a land/sea cruise tour. Except we flew out of Talkeetna. We had booked a glacier landing flight but the weather wasn't cooperating. However, the flightseeing company was sending one of their pilots up in their Navajo to check conditions and they let us come along for the ride. So we got an aerial tour and a full refund since the tour we had booked was cancelled. I did not find the flight to be scary at all. I'm a private pilot so I'm used to it.

We went to Alaska in June, and we saw Mt. Denali for two days. I did enjoy the bus ride through the park, seeing all the wildlife (except for the Lynx). We were in Alaska for 10 days, and everything we saw was amazing .
