Dr. Glaucomflecken (Dr. Will Flanary) opens our eyes to the epidemic of ophthalmologists being called into duty to handle in-air emergencies at Essentials of Emergency Medicine 2019.
Note to concerned commenters: Worry not, audience was laughing hysterically, but they are not mic'd so you can't hear them :)
Check out this hilarious lecture here and register for Essentials of EM On-Demand to see the whole event: bit.ly/303V0he

I saw an elderly man fall onto rocks, head first, at the shore of a lake, splitting his head open. I am an EMT/Firefighter, and so I jumped into the water and got him onto shore, holding C-Spine as well as I could (the water was frigid-had to get him out ASAP). I was behind him, blood going everywhere, holding C-Spine and trying to get a LOC and Hx when a man knelt in front of us and said "excuse me, are you an EMT?" "Yes, I am, are you?" I replied, as I really needed some help. He said "No, I'm a doctor." "Oh!" I said, "your patient!" He looked shocked and utterly panic stricken and replied "What?! No! I'm a gastro guy! Your patient! Your patient!" I was reminded of this in watching this video.

Hahahaha. Yeah healthcare specialists feel compelled to intervene in these situations but the truth is unless you've actually trained in emergency situations, you're probably useless. I worked as an ED RN for years and many older, more experienced nurses were useless at first when transferred to the ED to help us during COVID. Reacting correctly in an emergency requires specific training.

I dont understand. they make CNAs train in CPR, universal precaution, and how to deal with lightning strikes among other things Did I just go to a really good CNA school or something? This was in 2001. I thought people took these basic classes even if they wanted to volunteer at a hospital. I understand certian docs wouldnt know what to do with certian stuff but basic first aid and cpr? (Is it a liablity thing or dont all med proffesionals at least do CPR/first aid training?) Im just curious. Im usually on the patient end. (Not a huge fan of surgeons. My last one was terrible. Is it true that some are more worried about their #s than the patient? Heard that. This one had her underling carrying her purse for her and didnt tell me I had a hernia. Had to find out two years later when someone read the file. )

The top three term emergencies on flights (this is a joke, please do not take this at all seriously) 3. Acne (because very few people want to see you pop your pimples, and you'll annoy the entire flight if you take up the bathroom to do so) 2. Diaper Rash (Nobody wants to hear a Baby cry on a flight, they'll put up with it, sure, but they don't want to hear it) 1. Bruises (because someone got fed up either with someones kid kicking their seat despite being told not to or because someone got into a fight over the middle armrest) Like I said, this is a joke.
