can "eens" mean like 'try to'? i have this bunch of examples in something i'm reading, some have just "eens", some just "proberen", some both, and i think they might be all expressing a similar thing...

Hm, interesting. 'Ga eens naar de supermarkt' is the imperative, which could be translated as 'Can you try to go to the supermarket?' More about the imperative is here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtp_laaHtNqvink.html But eens can also be used as 'once', or simply as decoration, about which more here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jK6mht2LsrXJkoE.html

@@LearnDutchwithAlain thanks - the source was written pre-1926 btw, by someone who probably lived most of their life in the dutch east indies, if that makes any difference re internal/historical variation in dutch language - i'm pretty sure the examples are not imperatives, but the use of "eens" does seem to be meant to be 'de-intensive' in some way, as the forms in a local language they are meant to be translating have like 'attemptive', 'explorative', 'less effective' type meanings if i could put it like that

although, now that i think a little more, maybe it could be literally 'do once' is the intention here - i'll have to go back over the stuff and think about it some more....

Hi Alain. Is there any difference in softening an imperative between 1.Ga eens naar daar 2.Ga maar naar daar
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, no. Both have the same meaning. But your intonation might change it, if you were saying this like a general in the army, it's going to sound different.

What about the pronunciation for "eend" and "eenden?"
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the difference is the 'd' at the end. You can always use Google Translate to play the sound for you by typing the words and clicking on the sound icon.

For me een and en sounds same ((

That's indeed an issue many students have. Try recording someone saying een and en just after each other, and repeat it in the mirror. That might help.
