How about a " Nola converter "? It was invented by Frank Nola at NASA in the late 70's This is technology that reduces voltage to a lightly loaded electric motor saving electricity. I haven't tested one but for a motor then needs constant speed but has a varying load, it seems like it would work. Devices such as an escalator, elevator , conveyor belt could benefit but constant load uses like an air compressor , fan would not. Another benefit of the controller is that is gives soft starts reducing shock loads.

@@bobroberts2371, got a link to a "nola converter", my google'ing came up empty? Technically there is nothing stopping a motor from being load regulated. This is especially true where something like constant speed is required with varying loads, which is done all of the time in closed loop control systems.

I'm an industrial electrical engineer. Majority of manufacturing plants are paying their electrical bills in kWH, so power factor makes little difference on the electrical bill. We prefer to keep it above 0.8 or so. Poor power factor may overload the wiring if loaded heavily. We do use power factor correction capacitor banks on medium voltage (4,160V) motors only. Beware of "snake oil" salesmen who want to sell you a miracle device that will guarantee at least 20% power saving. Ask them to leave and to never come back! They will sell you a grossly overpriced surge surge protector that does nothing to reduce power consumption. I've seen industrial plants with $800 surge protectors installed at their main substation. They paid $25,000 for the device and were promised tremendous savings. Problem is that it's very hard to verify the savings due to large variations in production schedule and machine utilization. The salesman who sold them the miracle device, drove a brand new Mercedes. LOL.
@IkBenBenG
@IkBenBenG 5 жыл бұрын
I'm also an engineer. To further clarify (to other readers): Even factories and such pay their power bill based on the amount of KWh, so real power, they consume. However when the power factor is too bad then an extra cost gets added to the power bill, based on the amount of VARh above the treshold. The treshold is usually about 0.9 and as long as the power factor is higher than that there is no extra cost, so most companies with big inductive loads will also use capacitors to improve their power factor. The reason why inductive loads are bad is because they cause a phase shift between the current and voltage. Capacitors also cause a phase shift, but in the opposite direction. To properly correct the power factor, these phase shifts have to be matched so they compensate eashother (or at least mostly, usually the capacitor is slightly smaller to cut costs since correcting the power factor above 0.9 yields no benefits). This gives these "power saving" devices even less credibility since they use a fixed capacitor which isn't matched to a certain appliance. BTW, a common price for having a bad power factor is here 1/5th the cost of a KWh, per VARh consumed beyond the 0.9 treshold, though that may vary based on region and supplier. Almost all home appliances do not resemble an inductive load at all, and so while they can have a bad power factor you'd need a more advanced filter than just a simple capacitor if you'd want to correct for that.

@@IkBenBenG In my country, the limit is tan phi 0,4 which translates to cos phi about 0,92~ so all industrial places have to keep the power factor above 0,92. I believie its valid for whole european union. And there is amount of reactive power that you can draw and not pay for it, but if its exceeded you pay for additional reactive power, and there are separate fees when your power factor is lower for certain amount of time. For domestic use, they dont monitor your PF nor the amount of reactive power.

@@sumilidero To my best knowledge, power companies do Power Factor (COS Phi - as you call it) correction on their supply side but they may bring this to our attention if PF gets too low. Of course it may vary by municipality and power company's rules and procedures. They may also request that we don't start any major machinery during power peak hours. Either way, most industrial facilities get charged by Kilowatt-Hours, meaning that PF is somewhat irrelevant but again, it depends on local rules and regulations.

@@andrewevanoff1192 Yes the main unit is MWh (megawatt-hours) and the measurement is done on the 15 kV side in transformer substation that is owned by factory or other industrial facility, but there are other charges in terms of reactive power as i mentioned before. Thats standard in europe and i believe in rest of the world to reduce as much as possible transfer of reactive power in transmision lines, therefore local compensation in every industrial facility is required and the condition is required to keep (here) PF above 0,92~ otherwise there are additional charges aside of the standard active power added to the bill

as far as I know in my country you do not pay for reactive power (industrial users) but the electricity supplier can demand you to install PFC banks. About the PFC for things like the scope, I have a Tek DSO here for repair with a defective PFC IC. I think today many switching power supplies have active PFC.
@Rob2
@Rob2 5 жыл бұрын
Originally "power factor" just meant "cos phi", the cosine of the angle between voltage and current. Traditional inductive loads had a lower power factor and could be corrected by adding a capacitor. However, modern devices like your scope are not an "inductive load", the power factor is not low because of angle between voltage and current, but because of non-sinusoidal current. Mostly due to switch-mode power supply without active PFC. Unfortunately regulations on power metering not necessarily have been kept up-to-date w.r.t. this "new situation". Try to lookup the requirements of power meters in Australia, you may find that it says nothing about measuring power in the case of non-sinusoidal current. Here in Europe it doesn't. It only mentions "cos phi" and "taking effective value" without any specification on how that is to be done. So in theory a power meter could be measuring sqrt(2)*Ipeak to get Ieff and would still be compliant. And you as a customer would pay a lot more for the power consumption by such devices than for power dissipated in a resistive load. And when you think your bill is excessive, the company will offer you "calibration of the meter" (at your cost when it turns out to be correct), and they will measure it with a resistive load and maybe some capacitive and inductive component, it will come out correct, and you lose. In reality it often is not as dramatic as sqrt(2)*Ipeak, but it will do some form of RMS metering with a limited bandwidth. That can still indicate too high when your load has very spikey current. Which a modern electronic device can have. So you could actually "save power" (not really save power, but cut down on your electricity bill) when you filter the current to your devices in such a way that those current spikes are no longer present and the meter does not see them. A low-pass filter on the mains should do that. And in fact, such a lone capacitor would act as a low-pass filter, but not a very effective one. Likely more effective is a big tuned circuit at 50/60Hz. And of course you have to be careful not to incur a lot of losses in there, especially idle load. It could be more than what you save by the improved metering.

Active or passive? Passive they are just lowpass filters that block HF noise, Active convert to DC and resynthesise the power in an inverter.

They do actually work but not for the stated reason. IE tell someone they have one fitted (even if they have not) and it still works! It's a purely psychological effect whereby if someone thinks they have one fitted they subconsciously change their driving style to be more efficient. So if you fit one and don't tell the person it does diddly squat too.

In Spain there are 3 types of electric tariffs, in the small consumer tariff (up to 10KW) you don't pay for reactive power, so this kind of devices are completely useless.

The first image has the tagline, in English: "Give you is not just the quality of the products, and surprises". Well, you would definitely get a surprise in your electrical bill if you have it plugged in.

They don't even use a proper X-capacitor. Power companies install PFC for you on the pole or if you are very bad user in your home before the power meter (normaly at no extra cost). They keep track at the substation and hunt the source for bad power factor.

The box says, "Installation of the device would be at the power source near the apparatus in the circuit." That's like a waiter saying, "Your table would be at the food source near the apparatus in the circuit." In other words, next to the kitchen, where the waiters rush in and out. It's marketing BS.

I remember we did a Lincoln Tech years ago with a shit-ton of welders for the students, and the power company wanted PF correction and ultimately a large capacitor bank was added. I think it even had some intelligence in it to dynamically switch them in, or at least it sounded like it did. Otherwise it would be like drilling a hole in your canoe to drain out the water.

Without getting into nonsense, the fact is that:1)Reduction of " I squared R " losses make simple addition of capacitors of benefit near to inductive loads like fixed speed induction motors by reducing line current losses ,but will the extra terminal voltage mean the motor simply run slightly faster and do more work ? 2) If there is a KVA maximun demand charge tariff, improving power factor makes sense whether centrally or at the final point of energy use. 3) Anything claiming to improve power quality or harmonics is generally a scam, 4) inverter drives running induction motors generally operating at sub 95% of mains frequency will save energy and 5) fixed speed motor voltage controllers for generally cyclic load duty on mainly lightly loaded induction motors can make a significant % saving. 6)As an energy saving professional I can confirm there are no holes in the laws of physics to justify dodgy spurious energy saving gizzmos.
