Southern Railway's electric Booster locos! Dive into the world of EFE's new Hornby CC1/Booster locomotive with Model Railways Unlimited! Remember those Class 71 videos? Buckle up for its lesser-known ancestor, the all-new Class 70.
These technically amazing locomotives mastered express passenger duties, hauled heavy freight with ease, and could even venture beyond the electrified lines. Join us as we unbox this stun-ning model, give it a thorough close-up examination, and tackle a running issue head-on (don't worry, we fix it!).
But that's not all! Learn how to fit the pickup shoes like a pro, pick up some expert tips and tricks, and witness the CC1/Booster roaring to life on the rails. Part 2 dives deep into the fascinating his-tory of these real-life beasts, but for now, let's get this electric masterpiece pulling a train in style!

Hi there Mike. Well , you’ve said it before, and most of us agree, that if you spend a lot of money on a model, it should run perfectly. However, this is a wonderful electric loco. Your review has swayed me to maybe part with some of my hard earned and keep my Hornby Class 71 company! Take care and all the best for 2024😃

Thanks for the hints and tips you don't really expect this on a new loco though. Great video by the way Mike never in a million years did I expect anyone to produce a model of this particular electric loco so hats off to Graham Muspratt for getting this to market. Really looking forward to mine arriving from Rails hopefully without any problems ! All the best, Stewart PS Still in shock from the Hattons closure !

Most informative - thank you! ⚡ Looks like I now need to strip my 20002 down sooner rather than later. During a running session with a friend's malachite CC1 we found it had a number of low hanging sanding pipes that just needed quickly adjusting. All five suffer from excessive lateral play on their axles and I'll be seeking to correct this with spacing washers. Not tried fitting the shoes - need to look at the shoe clearances first. On a positive note the haulage capacity is fine and they certainly copes well with eight bogies (yet to try more). Yet to try changing the disc headcodes.... In summation a lovely model that has my thumbs up! 👍

I'd not been aware of the existence of these locos until I saw one for sale on a retailer's website, and therefore absolutely nothing about their history until I watched you excellent video! I guess this is a very, very early example of a hybrid/bi-modal loco? Very nice tribute to your erstwhile friend and colleague. As for the model, well I'd have immediately sent it back to the retailer, but I understand why you didn't, as it provided some very good infortainment, and you had the skills to remedy the problem.

My BR green version arrived yesterday. While fitting the pick up shoes noticed the axles have a lot of sideways movement obviously for curves. Sounds like you've got a wheel just touching. Also because of the sideways movement a couple of the pick ups(which have to move a lot) weren't contacting at times and needed adjusting. While adjusting noticed the slight lack of lubricant. After bearings(nice) and gears done decided to peek inside and there was the PCB screw sticking up! Lightly lubed up and the screw went down eventually. Cab lights seem brighter on mine more cool white than your warm white. 🤔 After all that turns out to be a really quiet, powerful and smooth runner. Had to have one because I saw the real 20002 at Norwood Junction many years ago.

Absolutely wonderful prototype captured in model form, as a DC electric traction fan, the Southern electrified lines always interested me, because of how much they remind me of the interurban railroads we had stateside - Air whistles, intermittent air compressor chug, and so on. Personally, I like the looks of these more than the 71s, sort of matching with the EMUs and the traditional boxcab format. Shame that the model had serviced right out of the box. I've had similar issue with Bachmann HO diesels, the grease they use seems to be the wrong sort for models. And while it's very finescale, that pantograph would make me kind of anxious. Though the prototype is obscure, it seems a great model to make ready-to-run since the real loco hauled so many varied trains, and it doesn't look out of place on layouts with no catenary.

Excellent video. Mine is sitting on a table until Friday when I will have time to have a play. Hopefully if I have any issues I should already have the answers now. I had to order that green, an electric loco on a freight has no business looking that smart! I ordered from Derails and there is a little card saying tested and by whom so hopefully it should be good. I found it quite poetic really about the "its alright, it does the job" review. Very similar to the real locomotives. Just doing their job faithfully without the glamour. The question is... If they release CC2 in malachite with the southern electric flashes will you be buying? Now get a driver in that cab! Or would it be motorman? Hmmm... come to think of it would a motor man in the 40's be trained from a steam crew that could drive either, or a dedicated pool of motormen? I'm sure all will be revealed in part 2 :)

Quality control seems none existent these days. When you have to pay the crazy high prices everything should be right straight out of the box. £200ish for this model does not sound so bad really for something brand new but still not acceptable to me you get a model that has so many faults, gearbox, screw hole not tapped, and they did not notice on the assembly line, sounds like an out of gauge wheel rubbing on the body on curves and now you find a wheel is not on the track that's terrible for one model and the kind of thing that is putting me off buying much more. I have a huge amount of stock and am turning more to building kits and planning a new layout which will mean spending on scenic things rather than stock. The model shop will still get my money but not on what I used to spend most of it on. It's sad about Hattons but I can see the hobby is in decline you hardly see any young at model shows now and in the shop it is rare anyone young buys anything now, A few years ago there were a few regulars in there most weeks, I guess like a lot they are now into virtual railways rather than paying a fortune and spending hours building a physical layout.

This is the problem with this hobby you pay all this money and it doesn’t work correctly and I am sad to say please do not take this the wrong way you as a KZfaqr and a model train enthusiast are part of the problem right now you are going to fix or attempt to fix their problem. What you should be doing is sending this model straight back if you brought this item and it was a brand-new TV and not a model train and it did not work correctly. Would you take the back off the TV, no you be straight back to the shop where you bought it from, but for some reason everybody seems to think it’s acceptable and then they film it on KZfaq making even more acceptable to take to pieces are brand-new model which cost hundreds of pounds you should be sending it straight back it’s a simple simple as that it’s the only way the manufacturers will realise that the crappy quality and quality control is not acceptable

Rob I totally agree with you, however I think I've got a reasonably good one given what I'm reading today. The problem with sending it back of course is even if I can get another one it may be far worse. It's no good Bachmann trying to hide behind EFE we all know it's then but the very real issue is manufacturers don't respect us, they want to wake up because giants can fall just look at Hattons.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I understand your comment. I agree with most of it, but the part where you say if you send it back what about if you can’t get another one they have a legal obligation. They’ve got your money if you brought it new from a shop whether it via Internet cell or from an actual physical shop they’ve got your money they have a legal obligation by law to fix it as they can’t fix it, give you a different one and if the hobby is that bad that people are prepared to accept substandard equipment in this hobby because they’re frightened in case they may lose out on a model that’s where the manufactures have got you over a barrel literally they know you’re not gonna bitch and complain too much because it’s a so-called limited run model maybe and people will accept it in whatever condition it comes because they don’t wanna send it back in case they miss out on having one. Can you imagine doing that with any other item you buy that being said keep up the great work. Love your channel love the content

@@Rob1972Gem This is the problem. If that TV you bought was a limited issue of 500 you would want a full refund and choose another, with a limited run of locomotive we want that model not a refund. I have been very satisfied with Hattons for many years but my class 66 had a twisted chassis so I had no real option but to send it back. They did send me a replacement but that had loose bits in the box that had fallen off and I am sure it had been retuned before because it was in a None Sound box, so should I send it back or repair it myself, I repaired it myself from fear of getting one in worse condition or nothing at all.

I don't do stinky diesels, but it's good when you can restore a model to full working order. If you're not yet aware, Hattons are closing down. I feel like I've lost part of our model railway family. When I'm upset like this, diesels don't cheer me up. Steam engines normally do the trick.
