I’ve watched as far as the obesity study. Big questions over the validity of the stats. What’s the likelihood that the entire dogs are working dogs spending their days on acres and on the move while the desexed animals were household pets, inactive and over fed.

With respect to the radiological evidence. Did you factor in the likelihood that owners that desex their pets at a young age are going to have their pets taken to the vet for radiographs later in life? These studies could be heavily influenced by other factors.

I thought the study with the increasing risk of mammary cancer based on spaying age has since been debunked as a poor study with small population size. Yet, it was cited here. Care to offer why you think the study is still valid? With benign Sertoli Cell tumors being the most common testicular tumor and neutering is curative, I don't think that offers strong support for neutering when one considered the protective benefits of sex hormones against perianal carcinoma (found most often in neutered male dogs) and reduction in orthopedic conditions. Your perspective? I've been advocating for and performing ovary sparing spays and vasectomies for some breeds the last half decade. Disappointed this webinar did not offer that as an option, especially for females to eliminate pyometra and reproduction yet still allow the protective hormone benefits.

In general, I disagree with your recommendation of ovary sparing speys because of the risk of stump pyometra which I have treated on many occasions.

@@VetDojo How can there be a stump pyometra if the entire cervix is also removed, which is what I do?

@@VetDojo If you read the original study (here is the abstract file:///C:/Users/DRastetter/Documents/Professional%20Resources/PDF%20files/Factors%20Influencing%20Canine%20Mammary%20Cancer%20Development%20and%20Postsurgical%20Survival.htm) it was retrospective and had a few number of cases. Both things that count against it as being a strong study. I have yet to find a study that has duplicated or supported such wide percentages differences btwn the no estrus, one estrus, and two estrus groups as this reports. Having said all that, I do not recommend hormone retention for breeds that are high risk for mammary neoplasia though some of the larger canine pet parents are encouraged to wait until full grown for OHE to minimize orthopedic risks of early hormone removal.
