Effie Gray was a woman ahead of her time, defying societal expectations and breaking free from the constraints of her era. She is best known for her scandalous marriage to John Ruskin, a celebrated art critic, which ended in annulment due to alleged impotence on his part. However, it was Effie's subsequent love affair with painter John Everett Millais that truly captured the public's imagination. Despite facing intense scrutiny and criticism, Effie refused to back down and fought for her right to be with the man she loved. Her boldness and determination not only changed the course of her own life, but also paved the way for future generations of women to follow their hearts and dreams.

@@lisetteeliseparis7070 im glad too but a more modern and nuanced study sheds new light on how john Ruskin was never repulsed by hus wife's physique based on their exchange. This conjecture was made later on based on sparse evidences. Ruskin was more or less coerced into this marriage due to their family ties and once it was revealed to him that effie married her due to necessity he refused to connsumate the marriage.

@@okenogamer I've always loved this quote of Ruskin's: 'Life without Industry is Guilt, and Industry without Art is Brutality.' (My Ma pointed it out to me). So would be very glad to read more positive things about him, because Ms. Rose's writings regarding John and Effie's marriage totally scandalized me.

A 5 year moratorium so that he could get his work done? Oh yes, there's a story there. Hmmm. I can think of a handful of scenarios to explain such a request, but most of them don't reflect well on him. There's a character in Room with a View who desires to have a perfect wife but doesn't have a clue what to do with one. He loses her in the end too. Interesting tale, John.👍

Although the real reason for the breakdown of their marriage is irrelevant, I would say it was plain impotence; that ridiculous story of Ruskin being "disgusted" by Effie's physique sounds unbelievable and made-up by Ruskin to cover up his impotence. Thank you very much for such a nice presentation. BTW, I like your pronunciation and accent, although I am not a Brit, I would say that there is something Scottish in it, am I right? Regards!

people here seem to have a wrong perception on Ruskin. The claim about being a impotent is straight up baseless and has no veracity to it. The new scholarly study has provided a more nuanced take on this matter. Contrary to the story that he was appalled by her pubic hair was conjecture that he had never seen woman's pubes but there is evidence to discard this. According to one author after Ruskin discovered that her family had pressured her into this marriage because her father was on Verge of bankruptcy Ruskin was repulsed by this act of what he precived as a betrayal because he had married her out of love . And being a conservative Christian he argued the marriage that was arranged not out of love but primarily financial necessities wasn't going to work

@@templer987 Ruskin NEVER had a normal relationship with a woman; he was either impotent or a neurotic terrified by the idea of sex (like so many Victorians). He was a pervert who ask for the hand of a girl 29 years younger than him! Rose La Touche was 18 and Ruskin 47 when the latter made a formal marriage proposal in 1866.

Thank you for sharing a different prospective on why Ruskin wouldn’t consummate the marriage. Instead of being honest he chose to torture Effie instead. I feel Effie would have been open to an arrangement where she could sleep with someone else and have a child. A child would have brought her so much joy but Ruskin was too bitter to think outside the box.

After being married to Ruskin for six years, she met and fell in love with another artist. She wrote to her brother asking him how she could become "unmarried" to Ruskin. And when he found out that his sister was still a virgin he told that was her "out". He cautioned her though not to mention her plans to her husband or in laws, because he had no doubt that Ruskin would rape her to keep her with him. So after telling her husband and his parents that she was going to visit her family, she left. Her parents and brother arranged for her to examined by a reputable doctor who confirmed that Effie was a "Virgo Intacta". And that's when her family arranged for the marriage to be annulled. Of course Ruskin and his parents were outraged at being tricked and especially at the gossip that Ruskin was impotent. Ruskin tried to save face that the reason he didn't have sex with his wife was because there was something wrong with her body but nobody bought it. Fortunately the annulment went through and she was free. Ruskin was a pedophile. There was a girls school near where he lived (when he was old) and he was a frequent visitor there. Years later when the girls were grown (and he was dead) they revealed what he did to them when the head mistress and teachers left them alone with him. They said they never mentioned it earlier because they knew no one would believe them. There was an artist Kate Greenaway who was a friend of his and she would ask his advice about her work. She wrote and illustrated many books, including Robert Browning's book "The Pied Piper of Hamlin". Her illustrations of children especially of young girls are beautiful. There is an illustrater's award that is given in her name, "The Kate Greenaway Award". Well, Ruskin was quite taken with her beautiful and charming drawings. And at first everything was fine, and he gave her good advice about how to make her illustrations better. But then things took a turn. In letters that he wrote, he asked if he could have drawings of her girl child models in their shifts (i.e. slips), then he asked if he could have drawings of them in their underclothes, and then he asked for NUDE drawings of the young girls. You could almost hear the heavy breathing at the last request. But Miss Greenaway never did. I can't help but wonder what she must have thought about it. 😐

Yes, Ruskin was the problem. Like so many Brits of that time he was the by-product of strict (almost fanatical) religious education of the worst kind (puritanism). Like most Christian sects, they have a sick image of women as potentially evil creatures who use sex as a weapon. I am quite sure that Ruskin was influenced by this and couldn't bear to touch a woman. He NEVER had a decent, normal relationship with ANY woman.
