Part 3: This effortless practice does not require closing the eyes, or even sitting down. We can practice this while walking or driving a car. The only "trick" to this is that we have to keep doing it for a long time (many months). It takes a lot of faith to practice anything for such a long time, in the absence of early positive feedback. That is why listening to nonduality teachers is so important during this process of evolution.

Part 1: The "I" that we always thought we were is an illusion of thinking that we learned when young. The real I starts with ordinary awareness, and grows from there by grace. In "effortless effort", the "effort" part is just the activity of choosing what is wanted over what is not wanted. "We" don't do this activity, but we do let it happen by itself. The "effortless" part is simply doing nothing, just observing how things go by themselves.

Part 2: More concretely, the highest spiritual activity is that "effortless effort" that prepares us best for grace. The instruction can be very simple: "stay as the self", which means find what never changes and pay attention to it. Another way of saying the same thing is "be aware of awareness". Another way of saying exactly the same thing is to ask who is actually aware of whatever there is to see that is in front of our eyes or whatever there is to hear that is in our ears, right now.

I feel for this lady and can understand her experience as well as her intense desire to awaken from suffering. Seems like she is so diligent, earnest and thorough about achieving this goal. I wish I could tell her from where I sit today that it’s about “not trying” at all and in fact releasing all that “doing-ness.” I have Adya and many other teachers to thank for this perspective. His “turn it into a question” was probably good for her.

Meister Eckhart, "Let go of God and you find God." "It's not about merit. Somebody not seeking it can fall off a bar stool and there it is." Grace is another word for gift. And it's just that, gift. Better to be receptive and aware rather than "try." Trying, encourages ego, where the self is too involved. When we leave things alone, without projecting our mind onto them, things reveal their true nature to us, as they are in their essence and NOT as the trying mind would have it. Spring comes....
