Great guest. I have a similar story. I read on the Effortless Swimming website that for their workshops you don't have to be a terrific swimmer, but you should be able to swim 400m without stopping. So I made that my goal, and at that time I was only doing 100m. After a while, I managed 200, then went backwards and struggled to do 200 again for a while. One day after a hectic week I got in the pool, and felt I didn't really have the energy for my normal swim workout. So I made a deal with myself if I just swim the 400m I could just go home and get some food. So I did, and then I did 😁. Speaks to the mental side of it. And same feeling that I could have kept going if I had wanted to.

My endurance was almost instantly fixed after reducing my kick intensity and starting running just a couple of miles on days when I'm not swimming. Can now swim 1000 - 2000 meter in the pool without long breaks. Im not an athletic guy, 46 years old, started swimming 10 months ago.

Very interesting and great storytelling. I hope I to practice some of these tips today, and hopefully i can swim my first 400m non-stop 😉

This was such a helpful conversation. I'm just in the earlier stages of swimming as an adult as well. It's taken me years to get to the 50m ability. Loved hearing how Quest was able to get over the mental barrier of breathing over longer distances -- that's where I'm getting stuck too. I've started getting video feedback from the Effortless Swimming clinic in Sydney. It's been super helpful. Can't wait to be able to swim 1000m continuously too!

With respect to breath control, I think a lot of swimmers feel out of breath because they end up breath stacking. Ie. if you fill your lungs with a big breath, but don’t blow out completely before the next breath, then the next breath you take will not be able to be as big as the first breath. After a few cycles of this, the amount you are able to breath in is significant;y decreased and you will start to feel very breathless. The easy fix is to breathe out steady through your nose but then right before you inhale, give an extra puff out to release the residual air in your lungs.

As a former lifeguard and swim instructor, the way Quest was handled at the YMCA after saying he is learning to swim as an adult is super disappointing. So inspiring to hear you push through and not give up. Also going for my first half IM so give me fuel to learn, tweak and improve.

I’ve been watching effortless swim content for a few weeks and incorporating some of the tips now and came across this podcast this video really resonated with me. I’m on a similar swim journey and have had similar experiences with teenage coaches at the local pool, starting with an athletic base and the mental challenges of trying to breathe in freestyle. THANK YOU so much for sharing your journey. You described where I am in my journey of a mental block of going beyond 100 yards. It’s comforting to hear there are techniques and “small pieces of information” that get us beyond “drowning sessions”

This was a great interview. At age 61 I decided to self-teach myself to swim beginning about 7 months ago. Now, I can barely swim 25 yards, gassed out, sinking legs. I have improved, but at a glacial pace. I'm continuing to practice 6 days a week trying different technique focus. As an beginner, its hard to know what to focus on. Maybe its time for a coach. Thank you Brenton for all your videos.

Do you have a friend who can swim decently? I bet they would be more than willing to help you get started, but if not then I agree that a coach would be a good move. It sounds like you're at a stage where you are willing and capable but just don't have enough instruction on what you're doing wrong. Once you get those tips you'll definitely be able to smash that 25m out, and then 50m, and then beyond :) good luck and don't give up :)

I have signed up on 2 occasions now to Effortless Swimming whilst informative, only thing I found when you do have questions and ask in the instruction video comments they are extremely slow to respond. The stroke analysis is probably a better option but I instead found more helpful getting a coach that's specialises in teaching Adults in particular TI where I am able to get instant feedback and been shown correct methods. I went with Swimwell in OZ and went from barely doing 50m, to now 2km + within about 7-8 months. I am slow but efficient and now focusing improving my pace so can do Perth To Rottnest in a team. This is only my experience and I do find Effortless Swimming YT vids helpful and keen to do a stroke analysis clinic with Effortless Swimming in future.

Brenton has videos where he says if you're gassed after 50... it's breathing. If he had checked his ego in that first adult lesson blowing bubbles and actually learning how to breathe relaxed hanging onto the side he would have been years ahead! Not sure of Brenton's .... but triathlon taren has a great video of learning to breathe.. worth a look for those struggling to breathe. Aaaand..Wim Hof. Nuf said!

With running, I find that during the first 10 to 15 minutes, I'm thinking....just half an hour today. But then I get past it and go an hour. And it's the same with swimming...the first 100 or so is the worst, but then I break past it.
