Love it! Been waiting for another guy to review Maltby. They need to get the recognition they deserve. FYI, anybody hearing about Maltby for the first time on here, they've been around for 30+ years. Every club is designed and tested in house in Ohio. Their design and playability concepts are unique and extremely functional but quite proprietary to Maltby. No borrowed designs or foundry catalog models here. They're the real deal! @elitefitgolf would be great to see how the TS3 and TE+ V4 compare to each other just to round out the iron reviews. Great stuff!

The TS4 is forgiving because of how its COG is located (especially VCOG) + the MOI + the "CDIM" as Maltby measures it. Physics doesn't care what your club head looks like, it cares where the mass is located. The TS4 locates the COG more like a game improvement iron than a players iron. You can see all the data (and data for a ton of manufacturer's clubs) on the Golfworks website. The only other thing off-setting the TS4 from the game improvement clubs is the sole width, but that is really player dependent on whether it will work for you.

@@adambarnes4191 Golfworks carries the X100 TI's. There just isn't any combo discount pricing for that setup but you can put the set together through the custom shop or you can call in the order and have the set built with those shafts. I just got fitted for some ts1 im's today and cant wait to get them in! They felt so buttery smooth even on the mis hits. Dispersion was incredible too. Heads, custom shafts and grips, plus a new max mill wedge for right around $500. Just because they dont cost as much as the rest doesnt mean they are cheap made clubs. @AZstu324

The awesome thing about Maltby "black" irons is that they use a DBM (Diamondized black metal) process. It's not just a coating like PVD that so many OEMs still use and charge $500 more for the set. DBM actually holds up very well because it's part of the steel itself. It's a little more costly but IMO it's the right way to do black irons. After a couple years it does wear but ends up more like a dark graphite rather than scratched up black spray paint. Would be awesome to see a review of these TE+ irons

Something to note here; the TS4 has a higher Maltby Playability Factor than the TS1 IM. I play the original TS1 but I have the new TS4 on order. Golfworks does have a backlog because these are so darn popular. So I’ve been waiting for mine for a good bit. The TS1 IM and TS3 have some heads out of stock at this time. I’m not sure if Golfworks expected the demand for these. I did order the Club Pak with the TT Score shafts. They are pretty low end shafts. It’s too bad that they don’t put KBS or Nippon shafts in the Paks. If you do want upgraded shafts, the cost goes up pretty significantly. So cost competitiveness sort of goes out the window if you compare what Takomo provides stock. I have some other shafts sitting here, so if I don’t like the Score, I’ll just reshaft them. If you price out the TS4 in 4-G with KBS Tour, you’re looking at about $900+. So keep that in mind.

@douglasgardner4004
@douglasgardner4004 16 күн бұрын
@@ianrowland8357 I think that both look terrific. The loft progressions on the TS1 IM match better to me. I prefer a slightly stronger loft in the 7, 6, and 5 irons. I wanted something that would be similar to the P770 or PXG 0317T. I think the TS1 IM matches up well to those. I've hit the PXG and the P770 and the TS1 IM feels just as good. I've also hit the Ping 525 and didn't like that feel. That said, the TS4 has that classic solid body feel. I have a set of Mizuno Pro 223 irons that give me that. The TS4 lofts would leave too much of a gap between 6 iron and 25 degree hybrid in my bag. If I went with TS4 then I'd go gap to 5 iron then 25 degree and add a 56 degree sand wedge. With the TS1 IM I go 57, 53, 49 then PW to 6 iron TS1 then to hybrids and woods. For me it comes down to gapping. On center strikes the TS1 IM has that new school hollow body firm feel that's quite satisfying and the TS4 feels like how a forged club feels. Both irons were very consistent for me and give good feedback on strike location. The TS1 IM just gives a half club more distance because of the lofts. If the TS4 came in the loft progressions of the TS1 IM then I'd go that way but they don't.

I really like the TS4 and am about to order from them with a tapered tip shaft. What shafts did you test the TS4 head with? Was the shaft a taper or parallel tip? I know that Maltby uses a "universal" hosel bore. Considering your other video on the topic of taper tip shafts in parallel bores, I was curious if you happened to use a tapered tip shaft and if so did you use a metal shim? I expect GW may just recommend a collared ferrule and beads in the epoxy. Thanks in advance for your advice on this topic.
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 28 күн бұрын
Hey @JohnWalkerCharlotte maybe this might help. The universal hosel has a secondary .355 bore that sits down at the bottom a couple millimeters. It's dead center of the main .370 bore. I've built a couple sets with a tapered tip shafts and as long as you seat the .355 tip of the shaft correctly in the secondary bore, it should flare out just enough to be snug at the top of the .370 opening. I've never had to use any collared ferrules, shims, or even shafting beads. I do use fairly thick epoxy so that's helpful for me. That said, some guys do recommend centering beads or side shims just to be safe. This is just my experience with the universal hosel.

How about the Maltby ts3? I’m interested in possibly having a set built. I’ve been looking to possibly order some components and have them shipped to you and built..

Lot of people are big on the TS3. Might need to review that one as well.

I’m looking at getting some Maltby irons as a 13hcp but having difficulty figuring out which to get. Which big name iron sets compare to the Maltbys line to make it a bit easier? TIA

I think the new Maltby heads look similar to some of the Taylormade hollow body irons.

TE+ V4. I am a 12hcp and built a PW to test out. Considerably nicer to hit than my Mizuno JPX 921s.

According to Maltby the TS4 is actually a little more forgiving than the TS1 IM.

I have the 1.05 wide sole version of the 54° and 58°. I'm a 7 handicap and a pretty decent wedge player. I've played a lot of "better player" wedges and these are the best I've gamed. So insanely easy to hit and control distance and the spin is off the charts! At address they don't look like GI wedges at all.

@AZstu324 yes unfortunately they were out of stock of the 1.05 but do you game any other maltby clubs?
@AZstu324
@AZstu324 22 күн бұрын
@@STONERETTE916 oh yeah. I've nearly converted every club to Maltby. Of course my wedges are.. I play the TS3 irons (heavenly). I previously played the TS4's also awesome. I have their adjustable 7 wood that is just incredible! I also have both mallet and blade versions of their PTM putters. Also I go back and forth between their KE4 TC Pro driver and a Mizuno ST-Z 230 driver. The Maltby gets better distance but the Mizuno is slightly more forgiving. So yeah.. I have a few Maltby clubs 😜

Maltby clubs of old were always gimmicky. Back when I was building clubs I would always choose Golfsmith, Snake Eyes, or Wishon components. The latest Maltby clubs hold their own against many of the OEMs out there.

You could also do Maltby 5-GW for $455 and pick up a Maltby 54° or 56° wedge for another $50. Their wedges are world class as well!
