One of the best things I have ever "discovered" while being around chickens is this...... The sleeve off a sz large or XL tee shirt is your best friend, just slip it over their head til head comes out the wrist part with the rest down over the wings, this replaces that extra set of hands needed for most things and really speeds things up, nail trimming, draining water belly etc. etc. Especially helpful when nobody else is around to lend their hands. Things get so easy when those wings are held in place. That old sweatshirt sleeve is truly worth it's weight in gold! Hope this helps someone.

We have a chicken that continuous gets egg bound. At least twice a month. I have noticed that what we do, is pick her up and massage her chest. Kind of like when they have sour crop. It doesn’t take about three minutes and she passes the bound up egg. Maybe it’s all about shocking the system of the chicken instead of soaking them? I have done both. You might want to try massaging their chest first to see if that works so you don’t have to soak them for 20 minutes.

This was the best video I found. We Have a rhode island red that sat in nesting box all day yesterday. This morning stayed on roost and didn’t go out. Gave our chicken bath in warm water. Dried her. Returned her to coop. Within minutes she laid an egg in the middle of the run and then had large runny poop. Now eating and drinking and acting normally. Thank you for your story.

Thank you. We just lost a hen last week that passed away during the nighr. I believe this was why. She was older & didn’t lay regularly so no one caught on until it was too late.

I'm so glad your sweet chicken survived! You and your husband did a wonderful job! My sweet Easter egger got egg bound right as she started molting. We knew to give her an Epsom salt bath and while bathing her, I could feel the egg. We soaked her 2-3 times in 18 hours with no result. She was pooping yellow liquidy poop and wasn't eating too much I saw a KZfaq video that suggested using an extra strength Tums dissolved in a very small amount of water. I ran to the corner store at 1 am and crushed the Tums in a small amount of water and gave my girl the liquid by eye dropper till it was gone. I put her back in her emergency coop on her roost and 1 hour later when I checked on her and she had dropped a very large blue egg under the roost. She started acting lively almost immediately. After dropping the egg, she went into a medium molt and didn't lay an egg again for 3 weeks which was when she seemed to be out of her molt and her feathers were regrown.

I just have to thank you so much for making this video. Same exact symptoms happened with my hen and it took two epsom soaks, lots of very gentle massaging and I got her to pass two wonky eggs! She’s fine now. I hate to think the kind of suffering she would’ve endured had I not been able to intervene. ❤

Found your video several hours ago after noticing faithy, our hen was not being her happy self. Hubby and I did exactly what you said. Warm Epsom bath, gentle massage and patience. Wrapped her in a towel and additional gentle massage. She released a deflated egg shell in one piece. She's eating and cleaning and drinking water. Thank you SO much! Several weeks ago we had the same thing happen to our chicken named Hope. We took her to the vet and we were told that there was nothing we could do because the egg had been in her for days. So we had the vet put her to sleep sadly. Your video encouraged us to do whatever we could. And so far, my faithy is acting like her happy self. I can't thank you enough.

It is very sad losing them and that must have been a very hard choice. You took her to the vet and at least you know you were doing your best & all you could for her. @@BockBockBouquet thank you again. Medical Center for bird's in Northern ca we're so sweet and gave us many options for our dear Hope. They come highly recommended. Hope went to chicken heaven very peacefully and we were able to say goodby. We gave her a wonderful life for the 9 months we had her and for that I am grateful. Faithy continues to be her feisty happy self, recovering nicely. We didn't know what was going on with Hope, but with your video we now have many tools to work with when it comes to my small flock of 3 and my rooster King Solomon. Thank you for your passion and love for animals. Hubby and I love and care for our fur babies and farm babies simply because it fills our hearts. Cheers to you Beautiful 😍

what is the cost of the Vet?

@@mtstateson8989 it depends on the procedure. We were at the vet recently for leg mites and spent 400.00 on medication for our flock of hens. When one has farm animals, be prepared financially because accidents happen or sometimes they simply are not acting like their happy selves and if you don't want to guess what's the matter, you take them to the vet and pay. We on the other hand know our animals and immediately do what we can to help get things back to normal

I just saved our hen's life tonight exactly the same way thanks to your video. I knew she was egg bound and had given her one Epsom salts bath and also used mineral oil on her vent, but she was still in distress. This is my little boy's favorite hen. After watching your video, I decided I could not give up for anything and drew another bath and literally closed my eyes and felt for the egg, keeping in mind what you said about coaxing the egg out. And just like your girl, our girl passed two eggs, one fully formed and the other a water balloon egg. I feel like a midwife! It took her a while to recover from her exhaustion. You did inspire me to keep trying, and I am very thankful to you!

@@BockBockBouquet, she's out there running around looking for bugs this morning and feeling fine! I've heard now that a calcium deficiency can be the cause. We feed our flock a high-quality laying feed, but I think recently my son has been offering too many treats. Lucy is our Red Star and lays every day, so it makes sense that she would be low in calcium. I learned that you can take the liquid calcium gel caps and empty them onto mealworms. My friend's broody hen became egg bound, and she did that and she laid in 15 minutes. Unfortunately, these scary experiences make us better chicken "tenders." Thanks again. I've subscribed!

Yes we must always keep learning and educating ourselves to do the best we can. Having and tending to animals, things surprise you everyday. High production breeds are more prone to being egg bound because they were bred to lay so many eggs unfortunately. Oyster shell should always be available on the side free choice in a separate feeding container, grubs (black soldier fly larvae) is also very high in calcium. On Amazon they sell a liquid bird calcium that can also help with and prevent egg bound. Excess calcium on the other hand can be dangerous and cause damage to pullets not of laying age as their bodies can’t handle it yet, they do not need it and can damage their kidneys. When integrating young ones we feed our mixed flocks grower feed with calcium on the side free choice to our layers. Welcome to our channel 😊

@@BockBockBouquet Thank you! I can't find a video anywhere on cleaning a chicken's bottom who isn't sick or is a chick with pasty butt. She's not sick (9 months old), just gets build-up for some reason when the others don't.We put her in a kiddie pool this morning and soaked her for 10-15 minutes and worked off the build-up. She seemed to like it! As you know Brahmas have very fluffy bottoms! Handling her this way makes me feel better prepared to deal with bigger issues like the egg prolapse. Thanks for your videos.

Sometimes that happens to certain ladies, you handled it right! We had a hen we cut away some of her feathers to prevent it. She would always poop lazyly like the others squat and she would just go, while walking like whatever 😂 we think that’s why it would get stuck in her feathers. Thanks for watching ❤️

We are new 🐥 chicken owners and ignorance is bliss. One of our chickens was screaming (not bocking) she was in serious pain so I grabbed her and knew immediately it was a stuck egg. I could see it so I popped it and immediately she was relieved! She thanked me! I had no idea it wasn’t safe to do it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Very helpful. I'm going to feel my chicken who is stolen and see if this is why she can't walk very well right now. She just sits in the hospital pen and won't get to to rest or drink. I hope it isn't too late. I thought there wasn't anything I could do, so I'm glad to hear that it is possible to ave my chicken's life!

So sorry about your girl not feeling well. Hope she gets better ❤️ She needs to eat and drink to get better if you can orally syringe with an irrigating syringe just be very careful as they aspirate easily. A little at a time and watch her swallow. If you gently pull her wattles down you can open her beak or pool it at the base of her mouth and some should get in her mouth and you’ll notice her swallow. Where is the swelling? Some vitamins in the water may help or feed scrambled egg or syringe egg yolk. Usually if they won’t eat or drink it’s not a good sign but if she can stay alive she can get better. Is she hunched with her butt down like a penguin? Are her toes curled at all? Are there other symptoms?

Thank you, I did the same thing for my constantly broody silkie, in addition to lightly lubricating her shoot with vegetable oil to make it easier. I noticed she hadn't been laying since hatching her last brood and was getting lethargic

You’re so kind. My husband fell asleep with her in his arms wrapped in a towel after the epsom bath and massage. He dried her off real well also. He loves her. He named her “Siggy” from Vikings 🥲I feel so bad for him. She’s not doing so well. Thank you for caring.

@@marilynmainwaring9978 Aw I’m so sorry, they mean so much to us too. Try giving her some calcium. You can buy liquid or powder calcium or even crushing up tums can work. Do you feel an egg? Or is it a possibility there is one broken inside her?

@@BockBockBouquet We will definitely give that a try. We can’t tell really. It doesn’t seem like it so we aren’t sure if she’s actually egg bound. We don’t know what else it could be. The penguin walk but not pushing like trying to deliver an egg. So upsetting.

Thank you, honey, for this video. I've had a few egg bound ladies, and I have massaged their bellies with good success, but thank you for pointing out a person could easily break the egg inside. I think I got lucky that never happened. What a lovely flock you have there. And you look so young---it's hard to believe you've been keeping hens (dinosaurs!) for 30 years, lol.

Liked & subscribed u. Very helpful & touching. Tanq 4 sharing. Is PASTY BOTTOM a sign of EGG BOUND ??? Or are they completely 2 different things. My hen has pasty bottom & with KZfaq videos help I learnt I’ve to clean it ASAP. will be doing it tomorrow. But better to ensure safety of my cuty hen’s & be prepared. Don’t want surprise make me feel anxious if it turns to be egg bound. FYI she’s been active, feeding well tho , no sign of lethargy & just 4 days back stopped being broody. God Bless. I just watched this to help my most favorite girl Nugget. There was a huge amount of blood this morning and her vent was prolapsed. I could feel an egg and thought I could help her but she passed away in my arms 😢 She was a Rhode Island Red and so beautiful. This is the first pet death I’ve ever experienced. It’s been a hard morning. I loved watching this before the whole crappy event though.

I love this story! So sweet.💗You have no idea what I've been thru today. But God bless my baby girl Betty seems to be rounding the corner. She hasn't stopped pigging out per her usual self for the last hour. She couldn't stand and barely hold her head up this morning. Still not sure what caused it. First time chicken owner, Tractor Supply sold me four chicks, come to find out three roosters and my sweet brave Betty. After researching for over a month I finally figured out they are Crevacour's?!! 100 eggs a year and not great mothers. Not sure what to do about it? Thank you for sharing! (Not sure about the 3 roosters 1 hen)

Hope she gets better! Usually if they stay alive by eating and drinking they will eventually survive whats ailing them. Sometimes taking them inside or separating to lower stress while treating can help. That can be a symptom of a number of things unfortunately and you’d need more information for try to diagnose. Aww that’s a very beautiful rare breed, meaning broken heart in French

What a wonderful video!❤️❤️ I treat and care for my chicken, ducks, birds, fur babies like babies. I fear egg bound hen. I have 1 hen about 7 months old CREAM LEGBAR. She doesn't lay often. She is super active and healthy. I hope she won't encounter egg bound

We hope this never happens to you and think it’s rare, especially for cream legbar as they arnt as productive of a laying breed. This seems more common in production breeds that are bred to lay a lot of eggs like sex links and Rhode Island reds. Our cream legbars don’t lay as many eggs as some of our other chickens

Thank you for this video!! You did a great job explaining so I'll know what to look for if my hens ever get egg bound. Also, I noticed the feeder at min mark 5:52. Do you have a video for where you got that??!! I love it! And I really need at least one so other critters / wild birds can't eat their feed. Thanks in advance!

I was thinking it looks like a trash bin but what if the chicken takes his foot off the lever and knocks its head. Or are they too smart to do that LOL

@@watchmansduty lol it’s not heavy enough to harm them the lid is very light, and once they step off they cannot reach it. That can only happen if they are leaning in from the side and if another chicken is eating and steps off, but the side guards for the most part prevent that. We have used these feeders for a year now and swear by them. No going back 😊

Thank you! We have a large mixed flock, some breeds include Rhode Island Red, Sex Link, Marans, Easter Egger, Ameraucana, Mille Fleur d'Uccle, Frizzle bantam Cochins, Polish, Silkies, Showgirl Silkies, Orpingtons, Barred Rock, Brahma, Wyandotte, Legbars, Ayam Cemani, Silverruds, Speckled Sussex
