Probably the most widely posted kid's science experiment on KZfaq but it's the same old example over and over. The egg in the bottle demonstration can be a great investigation of atmospheric pressure used as a STEM activity.Here are some additions that can be made to make it more interesting. Ideas include lengthening the mouth of the bottle, measuring the pressure change. In fact, this doesn't even have to be done with eggs, or how about doing the experiment without any change in temperature, no hot gases cooling or steam condensing to back to water.

Bruce’s videos have a nice innocent ‘early-KZfaq’ vibe, which I find pleasing.

2:11 It's amazing how much effort goes into filling those jars of pickled eggs. The fact that it can be done so cheaply on a massive scale really gives you a newfound appreciation for them.

As variations were being shown, I was anticipating or imagining a stretchy latex glove filled with air or water at any moment, a hand in the bottle, if it would seal well enough fingers and all. The indecisive eggs reversing direction were interesting to think about.

A sudden alcohol whoosh could be another variation to play with to create a vacuum, or with a snorkel/barrel and capacitor bottle, the blowdown might allow more time before losing the strongest vacuum. If a burst diaphragm were somehow "easily" designed to hold pressure momentarily after the initial evacuation of hot gases, but then break when an object strikes it, a vacuum cannon based on your "grape bullet" bottle example might be fun to try, or illustrative in some way. But yes, it would only be fun if it were easy enough to make or embellish.

@@YeanyScience I tried a latex glove filled with water and a gallon cider jug prepped with a little methanol. After the sudden whoosh of ignition, the glove just a few inches away was quickly placed over the neck opening,. Apparently the force was too strong and the glove ruptured quite suddenly as a slug of water blasted into the bottle - an interesting sound effect if nothing else. After a second failure, a stronger 5 mil XL nitrile glove did the trick and with some force the large water balloon glove was pulled back out of the bottle by hand by the tied end without breaking. In a second trial the glove didn't want to come out of the bottle and broke as I was trying to tug it out carefully.

Hello Bruce. The eggs seem to be cooked. So it may improve sealing. In case of raw eggs (with rubber to improve sealing). The pressure force would be enough to break it?

4:49 now we need to know why swirling water reduces pressure.
@YeanyScience
@YeanyScience 3 ай бұрын
swirling the water helps to dissolve the ammonia gas into the water faster, same reason as stirring to mix something faster

Hello Bruce. In thia video you've measured the vacuum pressure. Is it possible to also measure the volume decay inside the flask/bottle?
@YeanyScience
@YeanyScience 3 ай бұрын
yes, instead of attaching the hose to the straw to the egg, I attached it to a rubber stopper and put that at the mouth of the flask. The problem is knowing at what moment you would have the greatest amount of thermal energy pushing the air out. Tried it a few times, and got about the same reading as with the egg in the bottle.
