I have owned the Ego for 4 years and it's great. My yard is a bit larger than yours. I have several batteries because I own the mower, older handblower, and backpack blower. I wouldn't go back to gas if you paid me. No gas storage in my garage, no filters, no oil, no noise pollution. Too many positives over gas for a littler more power to matter.

Mow Better Lawn Service I believe Dewalt already has a charging station...maybe it's more like a station with about 6 batteries that can be tapped for power. that being said, no other manufacturer cam touch Ego mowers or batteries. I know it'll be hard bringing contractors over to the battery side but we all know...it's coming at some point.

Rob J Milwaukee made a strong push this year sending their battery products to some well known landscapers here and it looks promising, they also like it. I'm for this and would help starting and ending the day sooner and later in areas with tighter noise restriction.

I mow tall fescue at 3 to 3.5 inches with a Honda HRX217 just like yours. I typically have to double cut in the spring when the grass is thriving, plus it makes for a cleaner cut and gives an opportunity to cross cut. I love my mower and would have a hard time switching to a cordless electric/ battery powered mower. I do like how quiet the electric/battery powered mowers are, but that seems to be the only plus for me with the Ego.

Wow so quiet! The first video that someone finally showed what it actually sounded like without the audio leveling! Thank you. Now I feel I want to buy it. I often wonder if I'm disturbing my neighbors when I mow. My gas Honda mower is loud and I have so much yard that it takes forever, mostly because my Honda is so heavy, bulky and difficult to maneuver.

I have the ego self propelled. Had it a few months now and do love it. I have a relatively small yard, about 2.5k sqft, and can get 3 cuts with a 7.5ah battery. It drops slightly if I use the self propel. Only negative I have with it is when I use the side chute it leaves a small trail of grass. It doesn't seem to really disperse the grass as well as my gas mower.

I have both a Honda Hru194 bull and an ego 21”. I used to run a lawn business and the Honda clocked 4000hrs no issues and did serious tough work. These days I’m retired and just maintain my own place. I bought the ego for convienience but here in QLD Australia on QLD blue cooch. It struggles in summer and cuts out. I mow religiously every 5 days at a height of 1.5” I’ve had it a year and the electronics shit itself. At winter growth it’s fine and is a good finish. The bagger is just hopeless. I just replaced my old Honda with a new HRU194 commercial and it is brilliant so hopefully I’ll get another 4000hrs our of this one. But the cut on the new one is just brilliant very impressed

I have the Self driven 56v EGO mower and really like it. I really liked my Craftman 6.7 hp 21" and had zero problems with it for 20 years but I got tired of the gas and oil requirements. I also noticed that the EGO does not have the vacuum pull and does not leave as "Clean" a lawn but there are so many other benefits (headlights, folding and standing on its end, 90 lbs weight, easy tip and clean the underside, and short battery charging time) This was a great review for this new technology, thanks Grass Daddy

Thanks for watching! I'm hoping I'll get to test out the Craftsman battery mower on my lawn. I played with it at their launch event but that wasn't on grass. What's up, LCN. I'm sure all Ego mower owners can attest to this. You're out mowing and someone is walking by. They are about 75 feet or so away from you and they see you mowing and you see them slowly approaching you and staring the whole time. Finally they get closer and they stop to talk and they tell you that they were wondering what was going on. From what they saw, it looked as if you were cutting grass but they were amazed that they didn't actually hear the mower going as they expected to. It's great being able to actually hear birds chirp while cutting grass.

I agree it;s neat, but I've yet to see an electric mower that can make it through thick St Augustine without killing the guy or gal pushing it. When and if they come out with a battery mower that doesn't force me to sacrifice my comfort in mowing with a combustion engine (including the power to easily self propel) I will not be moved. Mowing is therapy to me - I don't want it to feel like work.
@robj422

I hear ya. You're still a gas person. I know that battery power still has yet to prove it's worth to many. My lawn is mainly TTTF and that's not as hard to get a good finish on like St. Augustine. My Ego isn't self propelled and I've just gotten used to providing the horsepower myself at this point. It's better for the ole waistline. When i'm out cutting my lawn, which has huge hill on one side, IT MOST DEFINITELY IS WORK.

I like that you sharpened the blade and measured the cut height, to give a FAIR comparison. well done. That you cut next to each other +++, it is an impartial assessment. good. Questions: how ling did the EGO cut for? I have 300m2 of similar grass to cut. I bought a DEWALT 18v X 2 mower the DCMW564T2-TE and it died after cutting just 225m2 while showing 2 bars on the batteries. Very unhappy with that so returned it. Now I am searching for a GOOD cordless mower. (the Dewalt build is nice quality, the wheels roll well, everything about the mower is good except the batteries are a FAIL.) cheers

Excellent video, thank you. One of my neighbors has the EGO, another has the Lowe’s Kobalt; both said they should have long ago gone battery. At the end of last season, 2018, my gas mower took a dirt nap thus I went with RYOBI 40V self propelled. Now I completely agree with my neighbors, battery is the way to go. Comparing cut quality these three appear the same. Battery runtime seems to be the difference. Each mower have their special features that may make one purchase one over the other.

What about the battery replacement cost? I have used my Honda for 23 years. The engine will never die. However, the deck is rusting out from the Florida humidity and only one wheel turns now with the self propel system..... but 23 years with very little maintenance. Just oil changes as needed. I like the idea of battery powered, except from the reviews I read, the batteries need changed every few years and cost half as much as the mower itself. Some people are saying they replace batteries almost yearly. If that is true then it becomes not very cost efficient.

Here in the subtropics, on the east coast of Australia, if I where to mow my grass down to 3 inches high I’d have to mow it again the next day! When I mow our lawn (couch grass) it down to about 1” and still needs mowing again after about 5 days at the peak of summer. I also work in a hardware store here in OZ, where we sell the full range of EGO power plus range, and more and more of our customers are switching to the EGO 56V battery powered garden care range and 99% of the customers are very impressed with their EGO purchase(s) I personally own a EGO blower, hedge trimmer, chain saw and line trimmer and can’t fault them, especially as the wife loves her garden and loves how easy they are to just pick up a go with them. Worth every dollar for a “Happy Wife - Happy Life! “ 😄 Only reason I don’t have an EGO lawnmower is that our petrol mower is only about 3 years old, but I wouldn’t hesitate a second, if I where in the market for a new lawnmower, to buy an EGO lawnmower. Especially with the 5 year warranty on the mower itself and 3 year warranty on the battery and charger.

what’s interesting is the Honda actually gave me a lower db on my tester… when you played the cut far away the Ego was quieter, it’s a different type of sound though. Gas is a lot quieter than it used to be. I have a Greenworks 40V and a Husqvarna 160cc (Honda engine), the Husqvarna does seem louder but not much different. I actually found the motor whirring sound of a battery powered device more annoying… also with a mower the motor is running full all the time whereas battery has an over-drive mode which can seem quite loud

Thanks for that input. Do you by chance have any experience that would tell you how an Ego would compare to a Honda gas mower at shredding leaves? From what I have gathered it kind of sounds like electric mowers have a slower blade speed and don't mulch as well so I kind of assume they would not work as well. I shred all my leaves (I just lay a layer out and run over them 4 or 5 times) in the fall and put it on my garden beds. I have a TON of leaves so it's a pretty big deal for me.

I just bought mine today so hopefully when I get to use it ill see if it lives up to the hype so far the build quality is excellent though

Great review!... i am thinking about starting a little lawn business... lets say 3-4 average yards each day for some extra money..i want to just use electric equipment since i think many customers would like the quiet factor... i did this 40 years ago for many years... question is since this video was made is there a top notch electric mower now that matches a 6.5 hp gas push? also i really don't want self propelled either... I did go in a store and see 80 volt electric 21 inch mowers for $250... clerk had no specs... thinking 2 batties could handle 3-4 yards a day... but thats just a guess... i already have electric string trimmer, which i love... its 5 years old and still works perfect...but i see they have really bad ass electric trimmers available compared to mine also... any help is appreciated... thanks

My son's and I have honda mowers. I mow 3 to 4 yards in South Florida. No problems either with my son's or mine. When I first mowed, one of my nephews had an electric. It was light and quiet. But charging was an issue. Since my yard owners only want biweekly mowing, the electric had problems with mowing to height. The battery died midway through a 3 hour cut. The Honda does whatever I ask it to do.

The honda mowers are far and away the best for the money if you stay in the lower models. The replacement GCV engines are cheap and the deck design is fantastic for mulching - plus the engines are timed correctly and actually start easily. Even after a decade and a half on mine. I think a lot of able bodied battery mower purchasers are missing the boat and should be mowing with a reel until the battery mowers are better. A good reel costs $130 and needs to be adjusted and honed about once a year at most. You do have to mow a little more often with them, but one pass with a scotts classic is faster than one pass with a rotary mower, so it almost balances out. Your neighbor can have a conversation next to the fence while you're mowing, too, and the only thing you'll hear is "we love your mower - we can still talk to each other while you're mowing".

The electric mower target audience is home owners. If you're mowing multiple yards or doing 3 hour jobs then I'd stick with gas. But for most of the lawns around here, especially for women, the electric are hands down better.

There is a blade height measuring device, made of plastic, available in all hardware and big box stores that you place the mower on a flat surface, slide the measuring device tip under the blade and raise the tip to the bottom or the blade and read the blade height on the measuring device. Costs about $7. Good thing tho have.

To me the lawn doesn't even look cut very well with either of them. You didn't mention but I think one can tell that the cut path is wider on the gas mower. The electric ones typically have a narrower cut path which would be OK for smaller lawns. What is that roller thing at the back of the Honda?

I bought my ego a year ago and for the most part I do like it. There are several smart things about the design etc. I have a couple rentals where I transport the mower and the way it folds up and is light weight is really nice. I think your review is fairly accurate. The biggest issue I have with the ego is when in thick heavy grass it does come up somewhat short. The power band is slow to kick up to a higher speed in heavy grass and too quick to power back down. For example if you hit heavy grass it takes a few seconds to power up, and if you come to the end of a run and want to turn around, it has already powered back down. It won't hold that higher power level thru a turn. I cut my grass shorter than you do in the video so that challenges the power too a bit. Good advice on buying a self propelled. I did and it's worth it.

I have two mowers that I use. First is the best. Ego 21 inch self propelled. I’ve had it two years now. Quiet, don’t need hearing protectors, no fumes, no handling gasoline and oil.. One charge handles both 75 x100 foot lots easily. The other mower is a Fiskers 18 inch push reel mower that I use frequently until I get tired, then Ego comes out. Mostly the Fiskers is an exercise machine for my 78 year old body. Talk of quiet! Fiskers with no power is quieter than Ego. But I am very satisfied with the Ego.

I've owned and used both mowers, side-by-side for a LONG time. I have a Marathon Kentucky Bluegrass lawn, with one area of St. Augustine. There's no way the EGO cuts either type of grass as well as the Honda. BUT, that being said, the SIMPLICITY and CONVENIENCE of the EGO product won me over. It is well-built, and super-easy to use. The single battery and charger can be used with their entire line of yard care tools. I sold the Honda to a neighbor. He's happy with an excellent used gas mower, and I'm happy with my EGO cordless electric.

I had a Honda HRX217...it lasted 6 months in my commercial mowing operation. Engine governor blew and the trans seal went out. I took a gamble and replaced it with an EGO. I’ll never go back. The EGO has been flawless, cuts beautifully and is so light I can throw it in the back of the truck along with a trimmer (Ego) and a blower for small yards and not have to take the big trailer. I’m adding the newest dual blade version to the fleet.

I've owned the Ego self propelled mower now for two years and I will never go back to gas again. It folds up to the size of a suitcase, when folded I can easily carry it with the front handle and store it in the house (no gas no oil), you can lay it on it's side and you don't have to worry about oil and gas leaking out, it starts every time with the push of a button, it's light so it makes mowing around objects very easy, it has headlights so I can mow at night when it's nice and cool and it's so quite it doesn't bother the neighbors at all, and I don't have to wear earplugs when mowing. If you are thinking about buying one you will be happy you did.

From other reviews with the self propelled EGO. They say that it’s able to propel itself with out the main motor spinning. So there are two motors. One for the blade and one for the wheels. And with respect. When you compared the clippings between the two mowers. It was basically apple to oranges. Because it was two blades vs one blade. Had nothing to do with the power from the engine or motor.

Grass Daddy you mentioned both in the same sentence as if the motor and engine was what made the difference between clippings. Besides, was the mulching blockage thing in its spot on the EGO? It’s possible that it wasn’t and that could’ve skewed the results. Still, you have to admit the ability of the self propelled EGO without the blade motor running is awesome. Especially to move the mower back to it’s parking spot.

Looking at reviews for new mowers as it's starting to show age..last 5 years I been running it on premix because I have a dirt bike and I'm lazy and don't want to store two types of fuel...LOL I hate to say it how long will a battery really last? Maybe 5 years! That is my only concern with electric.

It depends on the type and quality of the battery cells. I've been using A123 lifepo4 cells for the last 6 years and over a thousand cycles on them (that would equate to 10,000 lawn cuts. It has only lost about 10% capacity since then and it is still very powerful. Now, all these cordless tool packs are using a higher energy density cell, which should be good for 600-1000 cycles before dropping below 80% capacity. If you treat batteries properly (don't store at full charge or charge them when hot, or let drop below 20% charge level), they will last more than most people expect.

Great review overall, I agree with your impressions. I have had the Ego SP, the 21" Ego push and an HRX217. They are both great mowers but very different beasts. I loved my first Ego but returned it because it cut crop circles in my Bermuda. The more consistent and thick the grass the better, when I would hit thin patches or go over the sidewalk to the other side it would throttle down and back up. My biggest ego gripe is I like to set my throttle fairly high and keep it there. The Ego also does not mulch nearly as well. It's fine but my HRX made clippings disappear. It also had better suction. Ego has a high lift blade in Europe so maybe that's coming our way. The Egos strengths are obvious, it's light, maintenance and noise are great. The more corners and backing up you have to do the more it pulls ahead. I have little kids and stop a lot, it's nice to just kill it and start with a button even though I had the blade brake. I can also mow during nap and not wake them up. My lawn isn't as thick as I want it yet but I've never had any real resistance to even use the SP. I've never had a problem with power (except before it decides to throttle up) except the first Bermuda cut of the season when I was scalping it. But that gives any gas mowers problems too but the HRX was definitely stronger there. I would say the HRX felt higher end and gave higher end results. For my situation I think the Ego really cuts down on my overall lawn time and I'm much more likely to mow a piece of the yard while playing with the kids or something, it's a weird intangible that I wasn't really thinking about ahead of time. As soon as I moved off a Bermuda lawn I sold my HRX and bought another Ego. Overall I like the Ego better but I could see going either way depending on what floats your boat.

Same. I sold Honda bikes and power equipment working my way through college, so later in life when i wanted to replace a 10+ year old base model Toro, I shelled out for the hrx217. While the power difference is noticable, and the variable bagging is nice, I have to double cut my lawn pretty much all season. Not to mention the weight. It's not a light mower, and would be almost unusable for some people i think without self propel. How light and quiet these egos are make them a tempting alternative.

Too big of a drain - they're already scraping for power and can't afford to beat the clippings around more than they need to. The honda mowers are masters of keeping the clippings up in the deck and dropping them as tiny bits without getting too bogged down in the process. Functional horsepower is probably at least 3 times that of the battery mowers when you need to draw on it. That'll change over time, though. Battery mowers are way ahead of where they were 6 or 8 years ago, and I'll bet in another 6 or 8, they'll be a match on small yards.

I'm on my 5th season with the Ego... I just wish the technology had come sooner. The biggest problem is that the mower will miss the odd blade. No reason. No explanation. The blades can have been JUST sharpened or even brand new out of the box, and after a quarter acre lawn, you'll have 50 blades up out of nowhere spread throughout. I mow two directions each time. But dangit if that's not annoying. Mines a first gen btw... maybe they fixed it?

I think the issue has to do with vacuum force - my old gas mower really "sucked" up the blades. The Ego is great, but I have the same problem, I don't think it "pulls" the blades up with as much force, so it'll miss a blade occasionally. Youuber SmarterEveryDay has a great mower video that explains this.
