Over the years football styles of play have evolved from classic formations like the 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 to playing patterns and philosophies that over time have defined the identity of teams or in some cases, regions, and countries. Today, some of the most intriguing styles include Barcelona's Tiki Taka, Brazil's Ginga, Dutch's Total Football, Chelsea's Park the Bus, and so on.
On this debut episode of Film Room by ATHLST ™, Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director and ex-Super Eagles legend, Austin Eguavoen speaks on Nigeria's football philosophy as he takes a historic look at some of the greatest Nigerian squads, personnel, coaching, and mentality from the 1980s to the present time.
----------
Film Room by ATHLST ™ is a new analysis show that looks at African trends, tactics, and aspects of how various games (Football, Basketball, Athletics, Martial Arts/Combat) are played and won.

Cerezo Egu Baba! What a fantastic and in-depth analysis. Eguavoen has always been a force to reckon with in the history of Nigerian football from his playing days to the present. This is a coach who led a European club (albeit a second tier team) to a second place finish in their league. He was the gaffer that secured bronze for the senior national team in Africa most prestigious and competitive tournament some years ago. What else do you need as a CV? Nigeria has enough resources, but it is either we don't know how or we are not patient to harness these resources. We believe and rely too much on oyibo things. Eguavoen has always maintained a very quiet, humble and dedicated personality. Though not as famous as Okocha, but he is endowed with secret intelligence. Kudos man!

Something that the football association can do is to ensure that the fundamentals and principles of her football philosophy is taught to all coaches in the local league. Such that every player under their guidance already have these principles engrained, it makes working together in the national team easier and provides a path way for local players to make the national teams at all levels.

Who knows, but at least he has a plan and vision. That's the competence we need. There are two types of players in the Nigerian team, the first are former home-based players playing overseas and the second, diaspora players who've grown up in Europe. This distinction is important as it dictates the playing style of the current Super Eagles. The overseas home-based players are usually creative and street-wise having been born and football raised in Nigeria playing close ball control soccer on the streets, while the diaspora players are less creative but focussed, organised and disciplined reflecting a European football raising on standard soccer pitches. The balance between these two styles is the cause of conflict. Rohr favoured the organisational discipline of diaspora players, but failed to implement the set-play tactics that is common in Europe for this type of playing style. European team-play is like a variety of standard chess opening moves or scenes of a drama rehearsal, they rehearse, memorise and perfect how to organise themselves for scenes involving; corners, free kicks around the penalty area, byline crosses and penalty box crosses. This is how they score goals. Without set-play organisation European-raised players cannot function effectively, unlike our home-based overseas players who can apply inborn creativity or skill to break-down defences. This factor in combination with the growing presence of diaspora players has made the team-play boring and unexciting to Nigerians. Even though the Super Eagles are hard to beat, they no longer have the unpredictable impact of the street-wise creativity of Nigeria raised and born players. I believe the problem here is in the creative midfield, I like European raised Iwobi and Eribo, and I feel they deserve to be in the squad, but we need someone or two street-wise players - skilful dynamos, who are not as predictable; as an alternate to them. In my view Amoo is one of those players. My worry about Eguavoen is that he is looking to the past to revive a football culture or playing style, when the players he has on hand - are too European, and cannot play to that style. However credit to him for his tactical transparency in this video, but he should realise there is a difference between draughts and chess, the former looks at a problem in one dimension, the latter is multi-dimensional. Other than this there are some players Ahmed Musa in particular who are long past their best!

Fantastic presentation! If there is one thing I might add is to coach errors out of young Nigerian footballers. Yes, speed, technique, and IQ are crucial but oftentimes our players betray themselves and the team by errors such as selfishness and lack of discipline.

Coach, I've believed in you before. But you just made me believe more in you. NFF should please jettison the idea of bringing in a foreign handler who doesn't understand our philosophy. You're the best boss. Go and deliver and silence your criticsm

Johan Cruyff really did some wonders with the dutch... Westerhoff brought it to Africa, and now: Guardiola, Tuchel and Arteta are replicating different dynamics of the game

Happy that he was retained, with the addition of Amunike who is a two-time U17 world cup winner we have a strong team in our hand. Amunike knows most of these players very well (iheanacho, nwankali, ndidi, osimhen, Awoniyi, chukueze) all passed through him. The NFF did a good job bringing him in.

Indept, concise, accurate and elequent. He could remember the 80s and 90s like yersterday. This is what d super Eagles need: A Nigerian football philosophy validated by our football history.

The great Austin Eguavoen, I remembered walking past your rented apart at Ewere Street off Medical Store Road, Benin City those days going to school. Great team of 1994 best squad ever. I would have liked to hear your explanation about the Italian defeat and especially the nothing foul that led to red card stuff!
