Look, you fools, if the Brits hadn't saved these artefacts from destruction- when the Egyptians were not devoting the proper amount of time to collecting them- then much of our current knowledge Ancient Egyptian history would not exist. Rather than asking for them back, Egyptians should be down on their knees thanking the Brits for keeping their ancient artefacts safe. And, indeed, as has been pointed out, such artefacts are indeed safer - and seen by millions more people - sitting in the mighty British Museum than any Egyptian building.

The British Museum is in the wrong. It doesn't belong to them. It never did. It should be returned to Egypt. I firmly believe that if the country didn't buy it, it should be returned. Just b/c a country was exploited/looted/colonized/violated in the PAST doesn't mean that the looters should get to keep fxxking them in the future, too. We have the technology to make an exact replica so do so AND then bask in the publicity of goodwill that such a gesture would build.

Egypt should have possession of their artifacts. They should be immediately returned not a question in my mind at all. The British took mummies from Egypt for entertainment purposes at parties. Defiled tombs, unwrapped the mummies and for the finale, burned them in their fireplaces. How would they feel if Egypt raided their cemeteries and did the same? It is about time Britain respects the Egyptian people, their government and returns the ill gained artifacts.

Actually it belongs in Greece. It was a Egyptian translation of a Greek proclamation-it was created for a Greek audience firstly and an Egyptian audience secondly. It was created by a Greek king who ruled Egypt as a colony of the greater Greek world and sought to replace Egyptian identity with a Greek one. Saying the Ptolemys are a part of Egypt’s cultural heritage is like saying Andrew Jackson is a part of American Indian heritage. It just represents a sufficient lack of historical understanding. Anyway what is this hypocritic lady in the British museum is any reason to keep something not belonging to her side museum.

The Rosetta stone would have eventually excavated whether Napolean had it or not. For someone ailen to the culture of a country, it is not very accurate to say " The Rosetta Stone didn't come out saying it is important". Well, it need not be important to the people who don't belong there, I'm sure it had always been important to the Egyptians. Not having an international tagline saying something is important simply does not make something lose its importance. No matter how much you study about any culture, if you are not brought up in that habitat, you cannot know every bit of it.

I can sort of see what the woman in glasses, though she does get on my nerves, is saying but I think it's proper for them to go back to their rightful place. It would give such a wonderful atmosphere for all the artifacts to be in their original country and I would love to see the museum when it opens.

@Ethyogptn I didn't say "Islam alone needs to be controlled" What I find interesting though is that the Egyptians cared nothing for these articfacts until western cultures assigned huge value to the beauty grace and dignity of ancient Egypt. I hope that Egypt awakens to its pre-Islamic past and becomes again a great independant culture. Egypt, along with the levant, is the father of civilization.

You do know that the Parthenon was used as target practice during the war, so the British Museum went in and with permission took some of the stones, then when the war was over and they went to negotiate it's returning the Greek government cried thief, even though the British did everything they could to preserve the stones, why would they return it back to a country which isn't even appreciative about their help.

Many egyptians are proud of they're heritage both culturally and genetically, Zahi Hawass for example found the tomb of an individual who is connected to his family all those years ago, and as for England Boudicca's legacy became one of legendary proportions during Victorian England and was identified a head of the British Empire, had stories written about her and oddly enough a statue of her stands in London, one of the cities she burned down. This a matter of cultural pride and identity.

2) The idea of a “universal” museum might be imperialistic and the way the artifacts were acquired might’ve been legal at the time (laws regarding antiques came later) or not, but once they become part of the world’s heritage, shouldn’t this under certain circumstances take precedence over their location, yet in no way discredit their creator? The main issue for now should be who has a better track record at properly caring for these treasures and preserving them for posterity.

@CHAS1422 That's impressive. I'm a little jealous of the things you've seen, I'll admit. Wish I'd had those chances. I agree with your idea that if they are in fact returned (as I too believe they should be), they should most definitely tour. In cases where artifacts were stolen in ancient times, I'm not sure there's anything we can do about it as far as modern society goes. But if there's a chance to correct what we can from the mistakes of our own recent history, there's no reason not to.

If she said what we all know to be fair and just, she'd be fired and replaced and the Stone would remain. With that said, Why not compromise and commission the creation of a replica to be housed in Britain (at Egypt's expense) with some sort of accredited honor for Britian's contribution (at both sites) and Send the Stone Home
