Hi Phil. Thanks for the great job, but I have a question about how to connect the camera to my mobile to watch from anywhere what's going on with my children for example. Is there any software I need to download to my mobile? Thanks a lot
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
No, unfortunately this camera does not have any sort of wireless connection method like WiFi or Bluetooth, so you won't be able to connect a mobile device to it with an app to see its live feed; the only remote monitor you can use is a TV/computer with the USB cable. You probably are looking for a security camera that specifically says it has WiFi capability to remote monitoring, like these: geni.us/NA2kvlu [Amazon Affiliate Product Link] . Usually these device are plug-in only or have short backup battery life because the WiFi connection consumes a lot of power.

Thank you for a really good instructional and honest video - I now know what to expect from the camera when it arrives! Quick question can it be set up to record in night vision with motion detection (for example if I set it up and someone went near my car in the dark would it record automatically in night vision) - thanks (Nikki - Liverpool UK)
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, both night vision and motion detection can be active at the same time. Just note that night vision and motion detection mode will continually drain the battery, even when in standby, so if using in this manner, it's best to plug the camera into an external power source or battery pack for longer term monitoring.

Thanks for the review. I only ended up noticing I purchase the SQ8 variant by accident and thought it was the SQ11 variant. Hopefully it's of equal quality since the SQ11 listing was only 1$ more than SQ8
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
The SQ8 is a little bit different in terms of image quality. It'll have a slighter "bluer" color profile and tends to somewhat "stretch" the pixels horizontally in certain display ratios. The microphone is also less sensitive and carries more distortion in the track. Depends on what you're using the camera for. It's certainly not going to give you the quality and definition of an action camera like a GoPro, but if you're using it for home security, or a body camera it might be ok.

Thanks Phil. This video is very helpful. One question: My video recording is great but no audio. Maybe I didn't set it up correctly?
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
Hm, I'm not sure. There isn't an audio on/off toggle to my knowledge. It could be the camera needs to be reset. Use the pin tool that came with it and push it into the reset pinhole for a few seconds (see 0:43) The other possible cause could be the video player you're using can't decode the audio in the file. Try playing the video file on another computer, app, or device (like a mobile phone) and see if the audio is present in the file. If neither works, it could be the mic is defective on your unit and you should probably ask for a replacement from the vendor.

THIS GUIDE DOESN'T WORK IF THE DEVICE DOESN'T HAVE AN SD/TF CARD IN IT. - TO TURN ON/OFF - press and hold the power button till the blue lights turns on, blue lights means stand-by mode (blue color light). Turn on the device to use the different features as follows. WHEN IT IS NOT CONNECTED TO ANY POWER SOURCE BUT USING THE BATTERY ONLY: - MOTION DETECTION - hold the M button for 3 seconds until a little red light blinks then disappears and motion detection is now active, video length is 10 minutes and 12 seconds per segment. To end motion detection is to tap M once. - TAKING A PICTURE - press M once for picture mode then tap power button to take a picture, to end it, tap M once and goes back to stand-by mode. - TAKING A VIDEO - from stand-by mode, tap power button and right away it takes a video, to end it, tap power button again, goes back to stand-by mode. WHEN CONNECTED TO CELLPHONE CHARGER OR POWER BANK: - MOTION DETECTION/ TAKING A PICTURE/ MAKING A VIDEO - you must turn on the device first! then connect the power cable to the device and the other end to the power bank or cellphone charger and follow the steps above. Still 10 minutes and 12 seconds long per segment for motion detection. NOTE: - you cannot use any of the features above when it is connected to a computer but charging only.

@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex. When using the cable with a TV you must plug in both the USB and the yellow connector to a yellow RCA input port. It's usually labeled RCA or AV input (and grouped with a white and red audio input, but you won't be using those). Note that some modern TVs no longer have this type of input. The video feed cable may also work with component video input (5 ports, usually green, blue and red-1, white, red-2 use the green port). Then you have to switch the corresponding input using the change input button or remote control for the TV to AV, Video, RCA (or something similar) etc. The exact naming convention will depend on your TV model. Some models may have more than one AV input. Lastly, the camera must be turned on in order to view its video feed on the TV screen and not just simply charging via USB. Knowing if the camera is recording is a bit tricky. You have to really pay attention to the LED light flashes. Even then, you can only be sure it recorded by checking the SD card for the files. So, when turning on the camera, press and hold the power button until the LED light is a solid blue. Then short press the button and watch for it to flash 3 times before going completely dark. This *should* indicate that it is currently recording. (see 1:12 for demo) When you are finished recording, short press the power button again and you should see that it turns a solid color again. Then check your SD card for the video file. There should be three folders automatically created and a text file. Video files can be found in the video folder. If no files are present on the card, it may be because the card is not compatible or damaged. Your card should be between 2 to 32 GB in capacity and at least a class 10 card. It also needs to be formatted to Fat32 File System.

Hi phil thank u for a clear explanation. Can i ask? Does the unit can take video up to 8hrs? And how many gig or mem card can i use in this device? Thank u. Hope u reply.
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 4 жыл бұрын
The max gigs for the memory card is 32 GB, and each 1 min video is about 100 MB so the card could store up to 320 minutes or just over 6 hours of footage before it is full. In order to record that much footage continuously, it must be plugged into a power source as the battery only lasts about 90 minutes unplugged.

@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 4 жыл бұрын
Hm, if you're trying to use the computer to use the camera like a webcam, you'll need to utilize another software like OBS studio and set the input as this USB camera. Otherwise, when plugging into your PC, you should be able to view is as an external drive to access the files saved on the SD card in the camera. You should use a microSD card that is at least class 10 (speed) and can be from 2GB to 32 GB, but not larger. Each one minute clip takes up about 100 MB so a 2GB card can store approximately 20 minutes of footage before the card is full.

To access the files on the memory card, you can either eject it and use a USB microSD card reader, or, use the charging cable that came with the camera and plug the USB end into a computer. This should allow it to pop up as a removable disk drive so you can browse the files on the card and watch the videos.

What type of micro 32gb SD card do you recommend with this and does the camera also record audio? Also how long can I record a video with a 32 go sd card?
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
I'm using a Sandisk Ultra 32 GB microSD card: geni.us/zh1nA [Amazon Affiliate Product Link] Yes the camera does record audio. A 1 minute clip at max resolution takes up about 100-400 MB depending on the content so on a 32GB card you'd be able to capture about at least an hour of footage and topping out at about 2 hours of footage, although the battery life, if not plugged in, lasts only about 90 minutes.

@ReviewedByPhil

Hm, I'm not sure. If your PS3 can accept USB devices like a USB thumb drive or external hard drive, then maybe. I think the camera could work in a similar way. You'd plug the camera into a USB port on the PS3 and it should recognize it as a USB drive which would allow you to retrieve or view the files on the camera. However, I haven't tested this myself, so I can't say for certain that it works.

@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 4 жыл бұрын
Actually when you plug it in to charge it turns itself on automatically, which is why you weren't able to turn it 'on' because it was already 'on.' The solid blue light indicates it's in 'standby' in 720p mode. A long press of the power button, however, would turn it 'off' when that's the case. It should be safe to unplug from the computer USB either way, don't' worry about ejecting the USB device. The camera will shut itself off when you unplug it. With the camera unplugged and off, press and hold the power button for several seconds to turn it back on. The LED may flash several times, but wait until it's a solid color. Then short press the power button quickly. The LED will flash 3 times then shut off. The camera is in recording mode then with no LED lit.

This indicates that either the battery doesn't have a charge or the SD card is full/cannot be read. Since you indicated the camera is fully charged, this may mean that the SD card is either not compatible, formatted incorrectly, or damaged. Try inserting the SD card into you computer and formatting it with the FAT32 file system type, then trying again.

Is it on motion detection mode? It could be stopping because it doesn't detect any motion, but if you're sure that's not the case, then it's possible it has something to do with your SD card. Either the card is full, damaged/corrupt/not compatible, I'm not sure.

I find that usually when the unit can't or doesn't record, it's a problem with the memory card. Sometimes a compatibility issue, since the camera requires a Class 10 card up to a max of 32 GB. Some folks were trying to use 64 GB and 128 GB cards and the camera couldn't recognize them. Other possible causes could be the file structure of the card (should be formatted to FAT32 not NTFS or FAT16) or simply a defective card. Hope you find a solution!

@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the size memory card you use. On a 32GB card, it can store up to 5 hours of footage, though the battery will only last about 90 minutes per charge. It only automatically shuts off due to inactivity during standby, when it is not actively recording.

How many mins recording on 720p?
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
The video file sizes vary depending on the color/brightness levels captured on the video, though generally the 720p file sizes are about 20% smaller, so maybe you'd get an extra 20 minutes on the lower resolution, so about 110 minutes total on a 32GB card.

Mine did not include a card either and I had to provide my own. The camera will not work without a card. You'll need a microSD card with at least 2 GB, but can go as large as 32 GB. It must be rated at least Class 10 (class 6 or class 4 cards will not work). You will not be able to get a live view of what your are recording unless you plug the camera's microHDMI cable into an output screen, like a TV. So when traveling or using the camera away from home there is no way to monitor what you are recording. You just have to point and shoot and hope for the best.

Hey there. Thanks for the feedback. I mean I guess I figured the idea of motion detection is commonly understood so there wasn't any reason to show it, but I can see where maybe you'd get a bit of a sense of the range of the detection? Not sure what else, maybe sensitivity, but motion sensors for these types of mini cameras tends to be pretty sensitive, so any amount of motion over a decent portion of the captured scene would set it off. A person from several feet away for sure. A mouse, not so much. Basically the field of view you see in the recorded footage would be the 'trigger area' for the camera. If I remember correctly, the FOV (field of view) of the camera is about 60 degrees.

My rough estimate is about 2 hrs if it is not left plugged in. Even though the camera isn't actively recording the whole time, it does need to remain on which drains the battery.

Nice explanation! Were you able to output to TV with the RCA connector? No one on utube was able to show it
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was able to get the camera to output its feed to the TV using the yellow RCA connector. However, it only worked when the USB part of the cable was NOT plugged into the TV as well (running off battery power, rather than charging). I'm not sure if that was because the TV's USB port was interfering as a signal source, but I did not have another outlet nearby to plug a wall adapter to for the camera, so I have not tested outputting to the TV while plugged into an external power source. I can confirm, though, that the RCA connector works as intended.

Correct, do NOT plug in the USB. After I powered it on, it did appear immediately. However, I did have to change the input source on the TV to AV/Component using the TV's remote control, as by default I have it set to HDMI for my cable box. Some TV's have multiple AV inputs (e.g. AV1, AV2), so make sure you're "tuned in" to the correct source on the TV.

Yes, you can set the camera down in motion detection mode (either battery or plugged in) and it will start a 30 second recording when it detects motion and record up to 5 minutes for continuous motion. Does this sq-11 have WiFi capabilities? I’ve been trying to get it linked with my phone because some have said that it is WiFi capable. Cannot find it’s WiFi signal on my new IPhone 11. Don’t think it’s the phone!!
@ReviewedByPhil

No, unfortunately the SQ11 I have does not support WiFi. I think the confusion stems from the fact that other manufacturers may have released a "version" of the SQ11 that does have WiFi, though I have not independently verified or tested one of these units. So it's possible that some do and some don't, or, simply that some reviewers got it wrong and now there's misinformation being repeated out there that's causing more confusion. I know that, for me, when I get something wrong I do make an effort to post updates in the description or comments highlighting the error and communicating a correction, but this is not the case for all folks that put information out there on the internet.

@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, as these 'modes' are activated independently, you can first activate the IR lights in Standby by holding the power button for 2 seconds (LED will flash red twice). Then, press and hold the menu key for 3 seconds to turn on Motion Detection mode (LED flashes purple 3 times). As for the battery life, I'd use 60-90 minutes as a general guideline, only because it turns out recording at a lower resolution doesn't consume less power, it only takes up less storage space on the card and secondly even if the camera is not actively writing to the card, the IR light plus MD sensor are constantly consuming power and the consumption may vary depending on how often recording is triggered.

Hi you explained it all good but mine doesn't blink red twice it only blink once for IR mode is that good? Also when it's charging it's z blue blinking light is that right?
@ReviewedByPhil
@ReviewedByPhil 6 жыл бұрын
Have you confirmed that the camera records with the IR lights on when switching to the mode? It should have a purplish color to the footage and you should be able to see objects close to the camera in complete darkness. If that's working, then I guess it doesn't matter how many times your LED indicator flashes, as long as the IR mode is working for you. If the unit is displaying any lights other than flashing red when charging, this probably indicates that the camera has been switched on (while charging). Try pressing and holding the power button for 6 seconds to see if the LED turns to a flashing red instead. Again, if your camera seems to be charging fine, I guess it doesn't matter what color the LED is. The other thing is that if you purchased a similar camera from a different brand, it's possible that the LED indicators are slightly different for that camera.

It's hard to tell from your description what the issue is. First, check to make sure the SD card is mounted properly. Try removing it and re-inserting it. The second possibility is that the LED is red/blue (looks purple) in standby indicating the camera is in 1080p mode, which is normal. Solid blue in standby is for 720p mode only.

Hm, based on your use cases, it sounds like you need an outdoor weatherproof camera, depending where your traps are located, with motion detection and WiFi capability, so you can monitor the video feed from a phone, and possibly receive notifications when motion is detected. I also assume that wherever you're putting the camera may not have access to an outlet so you'll need a camera that is battery operated, preferably with a rechargeable battery. I found this camera that meets all these requirements: geni.us/YIpk [Amazon Affiliate Product Link] and while I haven't personally tested this camera, it's got a large number of positive reviews and currently has a "clip-able coupon" for a 30% discount (just click the checkbox under the price) so that makes this camera more affordable. Just note that wherever its used, it should be within 100 ft of a WiFi signal so that you can access the camera feed for monitoring purposes.

@ReviewedByPhil

Hm, I think there may be a couple potential sources for this issue. The first is that your video player isn't decoding the video format properly and is only processing the audio content but not the recorded video. This may be solved by downloading a new codec pack or using a different video decoder/player like "VLC media player" (it's free). If that doesn't work, the other possibility is that the unit itself is defective or the camera lens inside isn't properly connected to the control board inside.

Sometimes if the SD card slot is not lined up properly with the hole in the shell, when you put the card in, it actually slips in above or below the slot where the card is supposed to sit, resulting in the card going into the housing of the camera instead. So due to poor QC, it sounds like that's what you experienced!

This would be an issue with the software or app you are using to try and view the video file. It may be a compatibility issue due to to the kind of video compression used by the camera to make the recording. Your best bet is to try opening the video file with a different app or software. If it still doesn't work after trying some different programs to open the file, it's possible the video file got corrupted somehow, though this is unlikely if you experience the same message with every video.

Perhaps try another video file playback app. If that doesn't work try recording in a different mode, like 720p, and see if you're able to see the video feed.
