Even the toughest ducks in the world struggle to survive in this environment...
In winter, when the Arctic ocean freezes over, the common eider duck (Somateria mollissima) can be found in open water surrounded by sea ice, called polynyas. But even though these oasis provide a rich sample of food, the can be extremely dangerous.

The last bird looks so bad ass. I was so baffled, like, where are its eyes. Oh it's blended with the dark color of it's head. And the white part is so edgy complimented by the beakline.. Just majestic, inspirational, bad ass.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this reaction to some animals. Some animals evolved really striking markings and I've always been fascinated by them. The black eye strip keeps them from getting snow blindness and the contrasting colors helps them see each other while diving, because it's better to stay with the group and keep tabs on each other. The end result is something that looks almost painted.

Narration is far better than having to read while the video plays. The coloring of the letters makes it more difficult to read, and it distracts us from the actual beautiful footage. I suppose we could just rewatch it, but hearing a narrator is more relaxing.

Evolution again at its finest. This is what keeps me so enthralled by mother nature. Seeing just a glimpse in real time things that will alter the animal, plant, or whatever for generations to come that we will never experience the results from. Yes we see right now the results of evolution from way back but I love the curiosity of what the now will bring then!

@ElysetheEevee

Yup, because dozens of one species swimming against a strong-ass current just to reach oxygen while finding food, with many dying: that sure it's "fighting to survive" at all. Dumb, dumb comment. I hate clickbait titles but this isn't one.

We literally just saw one at the brink of swimming to safety but get too exhausted to continue *fighting* the current, leading it to drift away and drown under the ice.
