You were wise not to push on. Many years ago in July 1974 my climbing partner and I attempted the North Face via the Heckmair route. We did well the first day and spent the night just above Death Bivouac but the following day we were forced to retreat by heavy stonefall and an approaching storm. We never went back! Since then I believe the face has become too risky to climb in the summer due to falling rocks.

Good effort guys. I saw the ENF a couple of years ago from the pass beyond Gespaltenhorn. Woooo - so steep even from 20kms away - but so beautiful with Monk and Virgin in line. A few parapenters zooming around was amaaaaazing too.

First couple of minutes watching the snow part I was thinking: oh that doesn't look too bad, quite easy really. When you switched to the rock I was like: holy sh^t!!! That is freaking suicidal!!

Great video. How would you rate the Difficult Crack in terms of grade? Is the protection mostly fixed pitons or were you able to get some of your own gear in?

Can't help thinking about "The Eiger Sanction". Yeah I know, pure Hollywood. I still love the movie and this makes me realize how watered down it really was. The Eiger is mountain madness. At least the Eiger hasn't become the tourist death-trap Everest is.

This subject always held my interest, but not outside About 30 years ago i went to the library and got the book 'Climbing The North Face Of The Eiger In Winter" I had never been much of a reader, but this is one book i had a hard time putting down. Except for going to bed, i just kept on reading, and almost felt like "I was there". Really scary but definitely interesting.

Clint Eastwood and George Kennedy made it look easy in the Eiger Sanction.

My cousin has been up it and said the actual technical climbing is not all that difficult, maybe 5.6 - 5.7, but the severe exposure, rockfalls and changing conditions are absolutely brutal. We have done a lot of rock sport-climbing in the Shawangunks. Maybe you guys would know the iconic little route there called High Exposure. It's an easy climb, 5.6, and my cousin used it as a comparison to the Eiger, in an email: "Walk up and tie off a rappel rope above High Exposure. Then solo High E 20x in a row, quickly, in the deep winter, with a quick rappel down in between, in hiking boots and attaching crampons every other time. That's approximately the difficulty you'd face on the Eiger except that of course you're way, way, way more committed."

When you see normal humans attempting this face and not Ueli Steck, you understand how difficult it is
