During some recent record organization in my listening room, I stumbled on an album that I hadn't heard in over two years. After spinning it, I quickly found seven more candidates for this video today. These 8 Albums are all fantastic in their own way and many seem to have been lost to the "sands of time". I hope you enjoy this and would love to hear about other albums you feel deserve the spotlight.

Thanks for plugging the Maryjean and 9 others LP. That was my last sessions and tour with Marshall. The sessions were sometimes stressful, but some of the highlights were when Chris Donato and Tom Teeley came in to sing and play on various stuff, Gary Burke came and we set up two kits facing one another for Wild Abandon, and when Mitch Easter came to play on Steel Strings. Steel Strings was recorded and mixed live in the giant room at Bearsville. Don Dixon sang backgrounds from the control room while he pushed and pulled faders on a giant Neve console. Pretty fun. Marshall Graham, and I went out on and off for about 9 months supporting the effort. That record came out about the same time as La Bamba, soo there was added interest there. A great adventure. I love those guys. RC

Another great video. I have a few of those albums and will be looking out for the ones I do not have. I just bought Sting's The Soul Cages (on CD) at a thrift store last week. Looking forward to giving that a listen. You asked about some favourite 'forgotten' albums. One of my favourite albums is Ian Hunter - You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic. It came out in my last year of high school and I turned a lot of people on to that album. Not a bad track on it. How can you not love Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson. Other contributions on the album from Ellen Foley, John Cale, and a number of the members of the E Street Band.

Another great video, Tim! I love that you did this one. Marshall Crenshaw is one of my absolute favorite artists and is incredibly underrated. I used to play his music live when I fronted a rock band back in the day. Got to meet him- an incredibly nice guy. J. Geils Band- Oh yeah! From my hometown of Worcester, MA. They were huge in my neck of the woods, right alongside Aerosmith and Boston. A few albums I truly enjoy but don't get mentioned anymore- Foghat-Stone Blue ('78); Jim Croce- Life & Times ('72); Kinks-Misfits ('78); Deep Purple-Fireball ('71) and Little Feat-Sailin' Shoes ('72). Love these type of videos and discussion.

Hey Tim. Love the focus on that Marshall Crenshaw LP. True that nobody ever mentions that one! I guess I mainly classified him as power pop but yeah, he's got a variety of other styles in his music. That Robyn LP indeed is a bit tough to find out in the wild. I'm trying to remember where I found mine. Might have been from a local seller amazingly. I think you, myself, and Jeff Kempin are the only ones in the KZfaq vinyl community who have talked about Robyn Hitchcock. I haven't heard that Graham Parker album so I'll have to sample it! Great topic here! Cheers!

Great stuff thanks Tim. Big birthday last weekend (50!) and I got a fair few records from folks - amazingly didn’t own a single one of them! Pick of the bunch was one of my grails the Strokes ‘Is this it’ super pleased to add that to the collection, from the looks of it on Discogs the Mrs paid a fair few quid for it!! 😬 It’s going in a frame on the wall as the cover is just so cool. You got an instant thumbs up from me for the thumbnail. Anything by Robyn Hitchcock is an automatic buy for me. Agree his LPs can be hard to find but worth buying on CD if you find that first. I followed Marshall Crenshaw too for his first half dozen albums. I'll have to check the markings on my copy of Mary Jean +9. A band that I'd add to a sleeper collection is The English Beat, Just Can't Stop It and/or Special Beat Service LPs.

Hi Tim, very cool selection. I guess I'm one of the guilty ones who never explored past Marshall Crenshaw's debut, probably because in the UK his records never show up. The Soul Cages is a special record for me, that got me through some tough times in the early nineties. Robyn Hitchcock is impossible to find on vinyl in the UK, at least at a good price. Richard McCook and myself in the UK have both made videos on Graham Parker, fantastic songwriter. Cheers, James

Congrats on finding that Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians vinyl! That's extremely rare and expensive on vinyl. I saw Robyn open up for R.E.M. on their "Green" tour. It was only Robyn and his guitars. No backing band. Incredible! Also love that Marshall Crenshaw Mary Jane album! I recently bought that one on vinyl for like $5.00 The sound is spectacular and next to his debut, my favorite album of his.

Hi Tim my three mentions are LPs that sold thousands worldwide and are recycled regularly in second hand record shops. Each album’s sales were driven by a big hit single but the associated LPs have been somewhat been forgotten. The first is Gerry Rafferty’s City City. Of course City to City has the hit song Baker St but the LP is great start to finish with the beautiful piano ballad 'Whatever is Written in Your Heart' and the melodic melting"The Ark' -all with Gerry’s pitch perfect singing, arrangements and song writing. The next is America’s LP Homecoming. It features their best song IMO 'Ventura Highway' but it has great cuts like Cornwall Blank and the Saturn Nights, backed by great playing from the 'wrecking crew'.The album is at arms length from America’s overplayed 70s radio friendly pop songs. And lastly but not least is Al Stewart’s Year of the Cat. The album has the slick production standards of Alan Parson’s and his project session musos. Al just can’t help giving us history vinaigrettes like Lord Grenville, Flying Sorcery On the Border and the fantastic title track.

Kevin Ayers "Whatevershebringswesing" (Yes that is one word). Quirky and so, so musical. The track 'Song From The Bottom of The Well" has a guitar part that Robert Fripp (King Crimson) - while saying that Kevin Ayers was a really amateur guitarist - thought was one of the most inventive he had ever heard. It is perhaps one of the greatest tracks I have ever heard and certainly amongst the most threatening.

"Blaze Of Glory" is my all-time favorite Joe Jackson album. And I own them all. "Me and You Against the World" is a masterpiece of songwriting, but the whole album is an emotional journey. And the transitions between songs are brilliant. I recently bought the CD as I had worn out the cassette for 30 years! "Perspex Island" also happens to be my favorite Robyn Hitchcock record. "So You Think You're In Love" might be the perfect pop song (The Monkees should have recorded it). Other albums I've worn out: 1. Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey - "Mavericks" 2. Guadalcanal Diary - "2x4" 3. Jude Cole - "A View From Third Street" 4. Jules Shear - "The Great Puzzle" 5. Bee Gees - "Living Eyes" (from 1981, their most underrated, overlooked album; American radio stations refused to play it). Same is true for the Marshall Crenshaw stuff. But I'll revisit that too. I think a Robyn Hitchcock record that gets overlooked is Element of Light - great record! Great albums, I agree with all of your choices. I would add Kansas-Monolith; it doesn't have the hits like Leftoverture, but it is an amazing sounding record. "How my soul cries out for you" sounds unbelievably good.

Fegmania!.was the first Robyn Hitchcock album that I bought, and I bought it a few weeks after it was released in 1985. I've seen Robyn Hitchcock over a dozen times in concert since February of 1992, and have over 30 of his albums.

Great information on records I have not heard, but I'm familiar with the artists.. will keep my eye out for them.. The band Crack the Sky comes to mind for me.. though not totally obscure as their debut LP was rated high by Rolling Stone, they got screwed by their record company for not marketing their albums, and then went bankrupt, I believe.. Their 2nd record "Animal Notes", and 3rd, "Safety In Numbers" are excellent, and known by fans, but not the mainstream.. Although they are huge in Baltimore!..

Surely agree on “Monkey Island” - due to a weird (quadraphonic!) radio station in Sarasota (WQSR 102.5) playing progressive rock, I heard “Monkey Island” and for some reason it grabbed my 8th grade mind. I bought it and, like a kid can do, listened to it repeatedly. You are correct that the variety of styles and sounds on the record is amazing. PS: another WQSR-driven purchase: “Novella” by Renaissance - the song “Can You Hear Me” was so very different from anything I’d ever heard. In retrospect, I think the “air guys” on QSR played these 8-10 minute songs so they could go to the bathroom or smoke a joint.

Enjoyed the list! I agree all the artists mentioned have somehow "faded" into 20th century memories. It's a shame. I was lucky to be in college in the mid 80's and got to see many of these acts... Robyn Hitchcock, Graham Parker, Joe Jackson, Geils... Here's some thoughts that popped up while watching: Sting, "Soul Cages" - It's a somber record as Sting's father had recently died when Sting started working on the record. "All This Time" is basically a eulogy for his father. Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians, "Perspex Island" - Slight nitpick here, the record that preceded it was "Queen Elvis" (1989) (not, GOF, 1988). And it was RH&E 3rd release on A&M. Since you mention this record, please please please get their next release (and final on A&M) from 1993 called "Respect". Again, pretty strong RH&E material, and, ironically Robyn Hitchcock was dealing with the death of his father when making this record as well ("The Yip Song", "Railway Shoes"). RH also released a solo acoustic record in 1990 called "Eye", I'd recommend this as well. And if you ever find a vinyl copy of "Underwater Moonlight" by the Soft Boys - buy it, you won't be disappointed. Graham Parker, "Human Soul" - A good record, but not as good as "Mona Lisa's Sister", imo. As others have pointed out below - find a copy of "Struck By Lightning" (1992). Criminally underrated record, "Weeping Statues" and "Girl With The Butterfly Net" are standouts. Joe Jackson, "Blaze Of Glory" - Find a copy of 1991's "Laughter And Lust". Similar record, great material. Although both of these pale in comparison to "Big World" (1986). Some other great forgotten records of that era... XTC, "Skylarking" (1987) - You won't find this in the cut-out bin. Buy it, Listen to the whole record. Produced by Todd Rundgren. Andy Partridge has since referred to this record as "a summer's day baked into one cake". The Dukes Of Strateosphere, "25 O' Clock" (1985), and "Psonic Sunspot" (1987). XTC's alter ego. If you can find it, get "Chips From The Chocolate Fireball" instead, as it contains both of these releases. " Lou Reed, "New York" (1989) - How have folks forgotten about this masterpiece? Freedy Johnson, "This Perfect World" (1994). Great songwriter, reminds me of Marshall Crenshaw a bit. Graham Maby ("May-bee"?) plays bass as well.

Soul Cages is a great album. Bought it when came out. I’ll have to give Marshal Crenshaw a listen as I’ve never heard of them. I loved Joe Jackson when it came out also. I haven’t played that album in decades. No one that I know of listens to any of these albums anymore. Heck I was listening to All Things Must Pass and my neighbor commented that he hadn’t heard the song If Not For You in decades.

Big Graham Parker fan, but never saw this album. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for it. Saw him solo about 12 years ago at a small club. He started out hesitant but ended up with people standing on tables all singing “ Local Girls”. What a great show that was. Of course love Warren and have that great album. Joe Jackson, another great musician who’s a complete asshole as a person. Oh well, I still enjoy his music. Nice picks, thanks for sharing

'Marshall Crenshaw' and 'Field Day' are pretty awesome. 'Downtown', 'Good Evening', 'Life's Too Short' and 'The 9 Volt Years' have their moments. 'Mary Jean...' is not close to any of those. I bought it and then got the record store to take it back. The only decent song, for me, was the cover of Peter Case's 'Steel Strings'.
