with David Hyman, professional tour guide. Ein Avdat is located in the Negev Desert about halfway on the Be'er Sheva - Mitspe Ramon road. It is an extremely popular nature walk as there is so much to see and enjoy on a fairly easy and short hike. The natural gorge is a small part of one of the Negev's largest Wadi's - Wadi Tzin. The Wadi cuts through the soft limestone sedimentary rocks and carves a deep canyon. A few springs were exposed and provide a constant flow of freshwater. The freshwater flows year-round and creates a unique environment of trees, plants, birds, and wildlife.
Wild Ibex can be seen climbing the steep cliffs and vultures and eagles can be spotted in the sky or nesting on the ledges of the canyon walls.
Halfway up the cliffs, it is possible to visit man-made cells that were carved in the rock by monks who were searching for isolation during the Byzantine period: 5-6 century AD
