The thing about Rautavaara is that even though there's no appreciable melody, even though there is crazy dissonance, even though the notes COULD sound for all the world like they were random...somehow they never do.

The beginning of his piano concertos are so epic. In this one I feel like being taken far away on a little draft or a tree leaf and pushed by the streams. There is something deeply Lovecraftian about this music, wonders\horrors far beyond human understanding are suggested all around this piano fragile vessel.

@@yeetthebeet I look specifically for that cinematic quality when I'm discovering new music! It's so rare to find something both complex, theatrical and "unique". It was such a blast when I encountered Rautavaara.

No idea how she's able to play this. Rautavaara either writes something intuitive to play, like his etudes or the piano concerto 1, or something extremely sorabjian-like.

I don't know what that peculiar drum sound is, but every climax it masks the sound of other instruments. such an orchestration like this is not good.
