If only people had paid attention to these cautions ... but within a decade things had taken a downward turn, and now more than a half-century later things have unraveled in so many ways that Ike wouldn't recognize his beloved country.

For most of my life, I liked Ike. But looking back on it, he was so weak and cowardly as president, allowing the CIA to run rampant and the Dulles brothers to export their own brand of imperialism on the world. He did nothing to quell the vapid paranoia of McCarthyism. He should never have been president. I believe he was a moderate conservative as a human being, and I have no problem at all with that, but he just wasn't cut out to be president, especially following WW2 and the infancy of our growing intelligence services. Yes, his farewell address was a warning and well written, but he didn't control the burgeoning monster on his watch.
