Yep. (old guy mode on) Back in my day, we played football, basketball, baseball, ... nearly everything, in unorganized neighborhood matches. No officials, no or few spectators, and ALWAYS managed to resolve disputes. Well, sometimes tempers would flare - but that was part of the fun. Then we turned around and made it difficult for our children to experience the same thing - albeit mostly out of a desire to make things better for them. It's not all bad now - but the neighborhood pickup games - once a nearly daily thing, are pretty rare now, and that's for sure not a good thing.

That's nonsense. The center referee gave a vague warning; but the one thing he was specific about was that he didn't want the coach to say a word to him. The coach vented to the AR respectfully, and the center ref is not being reasonable to kick him out for that.

Kudos to the ref! I wish more refs would 'take charge' like that. I have seen way too many coaches and parents out of control. With the parents, many times it was because they lacked the knowledge of the rules, especially slide tackles. They would be screaming, demanding a red card for a well executed tackle because their child went down.

Ok. I know I'll get some argument thrown at me for saying this, so I'll just speak my mind. I am a Grade 7 Referee in Texas, which basically means I can referee up to Div 1 Adult Games (which I have). The Referee in a soccer game, of any age, has the right, at any point in time, to handle, and therefore dismiss, any coach, spectator, bystander or parent, that verbally or physically abuses him, his or her assistants or any other people that have to do with the game. As you can see from the video, the coach was dismissed for dissent towards the referee (he kept berating the linesman) and therefore the referee handled himself correctly. The parent that was subsequently ejected was dismissed for entering the field of play without permission (which they are not allowed to without the referee's permission until the game has ended). In conclusion, the referee handled himself correctly in this situation.

@@vlz.matthew - you can't hear what he initially did, that brought the referee's attention. But, you do see that the referee cautions the coach for his behaviour. After that, the coach has words with the assistant referee (you can hear the ref refer to him as "AR"). While you can't hear it, it's most likely something disparaging about the main referee. The referee hears it and sends the coach off. Like many coaches, he believes that now that he has been sent off - there's no further punishment that can be levied against him. So, he decides to have a bit of a say. Guess what? If you don't leave, when you're ejected, that's when the punishments (even at amateur level) can get quite serious. After the coach leaves, you can then hear a new person getting involved. He demands to know the name of the referee (if he was involved with either team, he'd have it already). He says something like "What is your name, or do you not have any balls to back up....". That statement goes into threatening territory - so he gets sent off too. I've refereed at a lot of levels, including this age of kids. So many coaches, that take this age level, are the absolute worst. When you see older, professional, players with really bad habits/attitudes - they learn that from bad coaches, at this level.

Hello all, a little clarification although "Frank Martinez" stated below very well. I will add a couple of items, you will not change the call of a ref, so it doesn't do any good to question them, for those that don't understand dissent, it is very easy- look it up. It can be a gesture or verbal action with words in agreement with or against the referee- the expression or holding of opinions at variance with those previously, commonly, or officially held. But putting it plainly you shouldn't speak to the referee or the officiating crew at all, this is the job of the team captains. this behavior is learned by players and why some games get out of control, because of this very circumstance. I referee at a high level as well as Coach in Northern California. Not all referees will handle things this way- and some slightly different. One person mention the ask, tell, remove- this is true, and it appears he did this but very quickly while the coach was still arguing. you also dont know everyihtng from this short clip of what occurred so its easy to specualte that the ref did somehting wrong. But dissent initself is a cautionable offense without a warning! the fact that he committed it several times and possibly to a youth referee, he was justified. Also stepping onto the pitch is a cautionable offense without the permission of the referee. If you notice both the head coach and assistant coach did the same thing and by right, they both could have been removed. Now some of you may say that's harsh, but guess wht this is how you control matches or they get out of hand.

They always say: "What's your name?" My answer is always the same. Ask your club, they have access to the assignor and you can deal with the matter. I never heard from anyone, and I lost count how many coaches and parents I sent off over the many years. The reason you don't hear is that they know they are wrong and cannot pursue anything, just cannot admit at that moment. This fellow referee handle it the right way. In my State is "sight and sound", if I can see the coach I won't start the game. It's that simple.

From what I can see, it looks like the AR is a youth himself. When I ref i make it very clear to coaches that my youth AR's are 100% off limits. I let them know that even a hint of a problem with my youth AR's will end their day. They are kids themselves and should not at any time be badgered by a coach or parent. If the ARs are adults, then they can ask questions, gripe a bit, but there is a line. For youth ARs, that line is anything more "how you doing today". That includes snide comments.

@CSFLChampion You will find that all refs have different styles. Indeed we all have different techniques. Some refs are take a "hard" approach to the games because it works for them. Some of us break alot easier than others. I will personally will NOT stand for any coach or parent who tries to get on a youth referee. We are scarce as it is and we cant afford people scaring them off when they are young and trying to improve their refereeing skills.
@Stinger49
@Stinger49 12 жыл бұрын
The approach you speak of is not my preferred style of referee, but being power hungry works for some referees, sometimes we have no choice. This AR was obviously a youth referee and a good referee will not allow any coaches to intimidate them. The approach a coach takes will decide what reaction a referee will take. If you question something, it wont be good. If you ask for a clarification, most referees will glad give it to you at a later time, either after the game or at halftime.

And the end of the day, is it worth for a girls U13 rec game? I understand the emotions but they have to understand its just a game at the end of the day, and life moves on. Your kid will not suffer thru life because they didn't get or get a call against them. Girls are like, can we just play already?

Coaches forget they are role models. The youth of today see this and we are surprised that they act the way they do ?

Problem with this video is we don't know what led to this. As former player and coach I have never seen more bad refereeing then I have since my daughter started travel. Referees essentially acting as the additional player on the field and making calls in favor of the home team. Not calling fouls especially where dangerous play is involved. So while the coach should have kept his cool. We don't know if the ref is innocent of anything prior to this video recording being started.

This is ridiculous. I have never ever worked with a referee anywhere that said "well let's screw up this team today" and set out making calls against one side. Plus, referees aren't employed or hired by a club or "home team," they are independently assigned to games. I don't care who you are, the referee made the right decision here, and accusing the referee of being biased is one of the most incorrect statements you could make...seems like you're the only biased one here.

Brandon ASV Instructor I don't know where you live, but I live in western PA. Clubs here do in fact hire the ref's that judge the games. There are ref's that I have seen first hand actively call games in favor of their home team. In fact when I was coaching to avoid this issue. I told my girls score goals. So they can't deny you a win. When I saw the same girl commit multiple fouls in front of the ref. As I stated one being she was face to face with my daughter and shoved her. He let that foul go. Now you may not like what I had to say. I really don't care if you do. Bad calls are a problem in your field.

Nick Woten they have some of the worst ref's I have ever come across. They are completely incapable of being impartial in a game. One thing I learned as a coach in that league. The only way to deal with situations like that. Is to score as many goals as you can. The ref's no matter where you travel act as the extra player on the field. I have seen blatant and very dangerous fouls ignored by ref's. When a child has been injured having to scream at the top of my lungs to get the ref's attention. Despite the player being obviously hurt. That nasty gram that was sent out by PA West. Without advising that bad behavior from ref's will be addressed.

+Annice Michelle I can only speak to my experience, but that experience is both as a current referee and a current travel soccer coach. (Also the father of a player who is himself a referee). In all the games that I have refereed and coached, there are only two times where I have genuinely believed that there was a referee who was a true "homer"--actually calling the game in one team's favor. In one case, I still believe that; in the other, I have since heard from others who played for that club that the referee does not favor the team, but is simply a horrible referee. More often, a bad referee is not actually for or against one team, but instead either his personal style of play or his inability to "read" fouls results in one team's style being benefited by the referee. Not by intent on the referee's part, but instead by his own incompetence. I once worked for a center referee who called every little brush as a foul. When he was (justifiably) criticized by a coach due to a goal being scored on what should not have been a foul, he ejected the coach outright. Now I'm sure that coach believes that this referee was biased against him. In fact, both of us who were his assistant referee's were convinced that he was "simply" a terrible referee with thin skin. On the other side, often one will see well-coached teams work to find out just how far they can "push the line" in terms of physical play. Unfortunately, a team which is prone to do this will get substantial advantage over another team if the referee doesn't have the courage or foul recognition to blow the whistle and issue appropriate cards. So I understand your frustration, but as a coach, referee, and parent my experience is that it is more due to incompetence by some than outright bias. That may not make it much better to accept.... No referees who I respect ever worry about who the home team is. We try to call a fair match. The best compliment that I can receive as a referee is to have the losing team's coach, players, or spectators tell me that I did a good job. And this happens quite frequently.

If the kids are not bothered by the bad call why throw a fit it's about the kids .let them play without a stupid coach being a sore looser .he should not coach if he can't control his temper if my daughter was on a team and this happened I'd try to move her to a different team or replace the coach

Cannot believe I'm reading comments from stating that refs intentionally throw games at the youth level, never seen at the highest level. Now parents and coaches I've seen them throw temper tantrums in rec soccer at u10😂

We don’t know the whole story but why is it that everyone can be ejected EXCEPT the ref? Some refs are just horrible and have no business in the sport. I think there should be a backup and if both benches agree then the ref can be ejected and replaced.

you file a complaint with the association, don't you? needs more than just one disgruntled coach or parent to show the claim as you state it is true.

Instead of your unlikely scenario of having a back up referee at low level youth soccer games, maybe you become a referee yourself? Are you willing to take the classes, continuing education, give up nights and weekends, make split decisions, enforce the laws of the game and deal with parents and coaches who don’t know the rules and disrupt the game while voicing their ignorance? Happy to have you.

@@freckledbandit8017 orrrrrr here’s an idea. The ones that take the classes, give up nights and weekends, continue their education, make split decisions and all that obvious stuff you said, and still suck at the job don’t get to be officials anymore. I’m not saying I could do better I’m saying the ones doing it need to do better.

As The World Game of FOOTBALL came first !!! love it!.
